Clean a steam wand, backflush the brew path when your machine supports it, and descale only by following the instructions for your exact model. These are three different jobs: milk residue can block the wand, coffee oils and grounds collect in the brew circuit, and mineral deposits build up inside water pathways. One cleaning method cannot replace the others.
Clean the steam wand after every milk-steaming session
Milk left on the wand can dry and interfere with milk texturing. Follow your machine’s manual for the wand’s specific controls and purge procedure. For example, Breville’s BES980 manual recommends wiping the wand and tip with a damp cloth and purging immediately after each use. It warns that failing to clean the wand may affect milk-texturing performance. The manual’s instructions apply to that model; do not assume another machine uses the same purge sequence or duration.

Clear a blocked steam tip separately
A blocked steam tip is not the same problem as mineral scale throughout the machine. For the Breville BES980, the manual says to put the steam control in the off position and clear obstructed tip holes with the supplied steam-tip cleaning tool. If the blockage remains, its procedure calls for removing the tip and using the specified steam-wand cleaning powder. The manual describes a 20-minute soak, followed by a brief steam activation and a further five-minute soak; then rinse, refit the tip tightly, purge, and rinse the wand. Use this sequence only if it matches your model’s manual. Do not substitute a pin, powder, or soaking method unless the manufacturer permits it.
Backflush only when your machine supports it
Backflushing addresses loose grounds and coffee oils in a compatible brew path. It does not clean milk residue from the wand or remove mineral scale, and some machines do not support this procedure. Check your manual before attempting it.

Breville’s Barista Express cleaning tutorial recommends a clear-water backflush after each brewing session. Those instructions are not interchangeable; use the method and cleaning products specified for your machine.
Descale with the procedure for your exact model
Descaling removes mineral deposits from water pathways. Before starting, consult the exact model’s manual, follow its descale indicator or control sequence, and check which outlets the cycle uses. Manufacturers differ in their approved descaler, water-hardness settings, steps, and rinse requirements.

| Manufacturer example | What its instructions establish | What to follow |
|---|---|---|
| De’Longhi La Specialista Opera | The manufacturer’s FAQ recommends EcoDecalk, a water-hardness test, and placing containers under outlets including the steam wand. It warns that an unsuitable descaler or incorrect process may cause faults not covered by the manufacturer’s guarantee. | Use the model’s own descale steps and settings; do not infer that every machine should send descaling solution through its steam wand. |
| Breville BES840 | The manual specifies one sachet dissolved in one litre of water, a sequence addressing coffee, steam, and hot-water components, and a fresh-water rinse cycle. | The dosage and button sequence are specific to the BES840 manual, not a general recipe. |
| Gaggia Classic E24 | The product page advises following the booklet and using Gaggia descaler. | Use the booklet’s instructions for this machine; this is not a universal descaler recommendation. |
Choose an espresso machine descaler only after checking the manual for compatibility. A brand recommended for one machine is not automatically approved for another. Do not mix products or improvise a solution strength, cycle, or route through the machine.

After descaling, carry out the rinse cycle and any tank-emptying or circuit-flushing steps stated in your manual. For the Breville BES840 example, the manual calls for a fresh-water cycle after the solution cycle. Keep these tasks separate in your routine:
