Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Large resin prints come out reliably clean and fully cured when you treat washing, drying and exposure as separate, geometry-dependent jobs. First remove uncured resin with the cleaner specified for your resin, then rinse hollow spaces and obstructions, let the part dry completely, and expose every surface to the resin’s required UV wavelength. A rotating platform or multi-angle LEDs can help, but no station can illuminate surfaces that the model itself shields.
Before you start, confirm that the part fits the washer in its actual orientation, that its enclosed volume will not displace enough liquid to overflow, and that hollow sections have drain and rinse paths. The procedure below combines those checks with staged washing, inspection and repositioning so a large part does not remain tacky inside a recess or under a support-heavy area.

Why large prints need a different cleaning and curing plan
Uncured resin left on a surface can remain sticky after UV exposure. Washing therefore comes before curing, not after it. The cleaning liquid is not interchangeable: water is appropriate only when the resin is explicitly water-washable; other formulations generally require the resin maker’s specified solvent, commonly isopropyl alcohol (IPA) or another approved cleaner. Anycubic’s washing guidance describes different approaches and machine-specific timing, while ELEGOO likewise says to follow the resin and washing-solution instructions rather than treating one duration as universal (Anycubic washing guidance; ELEGOO cleaning guide).

Large parts add three complications:
- Fit and displacement: the usable wash envelope depends on orientation, basket or hanging mode, and the liquid volume displaced by the part—not just its nominal length, width and height.
- Trapped liquid: hollow shells, blind channels, concave pockets and surfaces blocked by a build plate can retain resin or solvent.
- UV shadowing: a light source may reach the outside while ribs, cavities or the part’s own bulk block other faces.
Plan for all three before pressing a wash or cure button.
1. Read the resin, solvent and machine instructions first
Use the resin manufacturer’s specified cleaner, concentration and washing method. Consult the solvent supplier’s safety data sheet (SDS) for ventilation, protective equipment, storage and disposal. Solvent strength changes as dissolved resin accumulates; Formlabs advises monitoring concentration and refreshing solvent when wash quality declines (Formlabs best practices for washing prints). ELEGOO warns that excessive IPA washing can make some resins brittle, so extending a cycle is not a harmless way to compensate for a dirty bath.

Record the resin type and the machine’s recommended wash and cure settings. A setting suitable for a small test piece is not automatically suitable for a large, detailed shell. Increase or decrease time only within the resin and equipment maker’s stated range, and document any change so you can reproduce a successful result.
2. Check fit, orientation and overflow before adding liquid
Dry-fit the model in the exact orientation you intend to wash. Include the basket, hanging hooks, build plate, supports and any protruding features in the measurement. A part can fit diagonally in a tank yet strike the basket or lid when it is lowered vertically.

Enclosed volume matters as much as outside dimensions. A hollow model displaces solvent when submerged; a tank filled to its marked level can overflow when the part enters. The following limits are manufacturer-published values for the named Form Wash models, not universal dimensions for every station:
| Washer | Usable dimensions stated by manufacturer | Enclosed-volume overflow threshold |
|---|---|---|
| Form Wash (1st generation) | 14.5 × 14.5 × 17.5 cm | 1.8 L |
| Form Wash (2nd generation), platform with basket | 20.0 × 14.5 × 18.5 cm | 2 L |
| Form Wash (2nd generation), platform without basket | 20.0 × 14.5 × 19.5 cm | 2 L |
| Form Wash (2nd generation), in basket | 20.0 × 14.5 × 23.0 cm | 3 L |
| Form Wash L | 33.5 × 20 × 30 cm | 7.5 L |
These figures come from Formlabs’ washing guidance; check the current manual for your exact revision before filling the tank.

For another current example, the ELEGOO Mercury Plus V3.0 product page lists a 7.5 L cleaning capacity. It specifies a maximum basket wash volume of 230 × 135 × 260 mm and a maximum hanging-mode wash volume of 214 × 135 × 180 mm. The same page instructs users to remove the build plate for Jupiter models and to check the maximum wash volume for other models (Mercury Plus V3.0 specifications). Treat those values as specifications for that product, not as a promise that every large printer part will fit.
A practical displacement check
- Measure or estimate the solid and enclosed volume of the printed part from your slicer or CAD file.
- Fill the tank below its normal operating mark while it is empty.
- Lower the part slowly, keeping a tray beneath the tank, and verify that the liquid level remains below the rim.
- If the level rises too far, remove liquid, use a larger tank, change orientation, or split the wash into separate stages. Never rely on the lid to contain an overflow.
3. Prepare a safe, clean washing area
Work in a well-ventilated area. Wear nitrile gloves and safety glasses, and use additional protection required by the resin and solvent SDS. ELEGOO cautions that fumes can be harmful and that its washing solution can corrode or discolor the outside of its station; wipe drips promptly and keep the machine on a chemically compatible tray. Formlabs also recommends gloves when handling solvent-contaminated parts.
Keep separate containers for dirty and clean solvent, a soft detail brush, a syringe for narrow passages, lint-free wipes, and a clean-solvent squeeze bottle. Do not use a brush or bottle that has already picked up cured particles in your final rinse. Keep the printer, wash station and cure chamber away from direct sunlight while uncured resin is present.
4. Wash the print in stages
Stage 1: remove the worst resin before the main bath
- Put on the required PPE and move the freshly printed part over a catch tray.
- Let excess resin drip back toward the resin container when practical; avoid wiping uncured resin into a drain.
- Give the model a preliminary rinse in a small volume of the approved solvent. Formlabs recommends this pre-rinse to remove most surface resin before the main wash, preserving the cleaner in the larger bucket.
- For a large part, lower it slowly to avoid splashing and to observe the liquid level.
Dirty solvent can redeposit resin. Formlabs notes that contaminated liquid may leave a tacky or waxy film, so a long cycle in exhausted solvent can produce a worse finish than a shorter cycle followed by clean liquid.

Stage 2: run the main wash
- Place the model in the basket or hang it as the machine manual specifies. Ensure no face is pressed against the basket wall or hidden under a platform.
- Use the resin maker’s wash time and the station’s selected mode. Adjust for size and complexity only where the instructions allow; there is no universal large-print time.
- Stop and inspect instead of automatically adding repeated long cycles. ELEGOO specifically warns against excessive IPA exposure for resins that can become brittle.
If you use IPA and the part is still tacky, Formlabs recommends a prompt second wash in clean IPA. If you use TPM, let the model drip-dry thoroughly before a second wash with water or clean IPA; results vary by resin. Do not combine cleaners unless both the resin and solvent instructions permit it.
Stage 3: rinse details and obstructed surfaces
After the machine cycle, rinse exterior details with a squeeze bottle of clean, approved solvent. This uses a small amount of fresh liquid where a full tank change would be wasteful. A soft brush can loosen residue from text and ribs, but do not scrub so aggressively that you damage uncured edges or supports.
Parts printed directly on a platform can hold resin or solvent in concave areas. Remove the part from the platform when the machine’s procedure permits, inspect the newly exposed face, and run a second wash if needed. Long parts may also need to be repositioned halfway through a cycle so the previously shielded end is immersed and agitated.
5. Clean hollow prints from the inside out
A hollow shell is not clean merely because its exterior looks matte. It needs openings that let solvent enter and leave. Drain holes should be placed at low points for the chosen print orientation and be large enough for the cleaner to flow rather than forming a trapped pocket.

- Orient the part over the wash bucket with a drain opening at the lowest point.
- After the bath, pause over the bucket and allow solvent and uncured resin to run back into it.
- Rotate the model through several angles so liquid does not remain behind an internal wall.
- Flush narrow or blind channels with a syringe filled with clean solvent. Formlabs specifically recommends this for passages that do not drain on their own.
- Repeat the flush until the liquid leaving the channel is free of visible resin, then let the part drain again.
Do not seal drain holes before cleaning and drying. If a design has no viable path for liquid to enter and exit, the safest correction is to modify the model and reprint; curing a contaminated cavity can leave liquid resin trapped inside.
6. Dry completely before UV curing
Place the washed model where air can reach every opening and let it dry completely. ELEGOO’s stated sequence is wash, air-dry completely, then UV cure. Solvent trapped in a cavity or under a ledge can cause clouding, swelling, surface defects or an unsafe vapor buildup when exposed to UV heat. Use compressed air only if the resin and machine instructions allow it and the airflow will not spray contaminated liquid onto people or equipment.

Use a cure chamber with enough usable space for the model and compatibility with the resin’s required wavelength. How to arrange a large model
- Keep the part from touching the chamber wall or blocking the light source.
- Expose one broad face, then rotate the model to present the opposite face and any underside.
- For deep recesses, change the angle between exposures so the cavity opening faces the LEDs rather than relying on reflected light.
- Follow the resin maker’s wavelength and time guidance; do not infer a cure schedule from another resin.
The ELEGOO Mercury Plus V3.0 page describes a rotating turntable, 24 405 nm LEDs and an additional LED below a transparent turntable, marketed as 360-degree all-round curing. The Mercury XS bundle uses two UV light bars and four bottom LEDs (Mercury XS specifications and instructions). These arrangements can reduce shadowing, but a large, concave or heavily ribbed model may still need repositioning.
Device-specific timing example
Mercury XS instructions say that small models under 30 mm in diameter may use about two minutes, that complex surface structures may require more time, and that a continuous session longer than 40 minutes should be avoided to prevent overheating. Those values apply to the cited device instructions and are not a universal schedule for a large print. The reviewed sources do not establish one correct cure duration for all large parts.

Choosing equipment for a large resin print
Compare the constraints that determine whether your model can actually be cleaned and exposed, rather than choosing only by a “360-degree” marketing phrase.
| Decision point | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Wash envelope | Usable length, width and height in basket and hanging modes | A nominal tank size may not equal the space available around a build plate or basket. |
| Displacement | Maximum enclosed volume before overflow | Hollow and solid parts raise the liquid level when submerged. |
| Mounting method | Whether the build plate fits and whether it can be removed | Platform contact can shield a face and trap solvent. |
| Rinse control | Ability to use a clean-solvent bottle or syringe | Small channels and exterior details often need targeted flushing. |
| Curing space | Chamber dimensions and room to rotate the model | A model can fit the wash tank but still sit too close to UV lights or walls. |
| Light compatibility | Resin-required wavelength and exposure controls | UV output outside the resin specification can leave it under- or over-cured. |
| Solvent safety | Tank materials, ventilation and spill containment | Some cleaners can discolor or corrode equipment and produce harmful vapors. |
Troubleshooting common large-print failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| Surface remains sticky after curing | Uncured resin or contaminated solvent remained on the surface | Wash again in clean, resin-approved solvent, flush details, dry fully and then cure. |
| Waxy or cloudy film | Resin redeposited from an exhausted wash bath | Use a clean-solvent rinse; refresh the bath according to solvent concentration and SDS guidance. |
| Interior is liquid or glossy | No drain path, trapped solvent or unwashed cavity | Drain through designed holes, syringe-flush channels and repeat the wash before drying. |
| Part becomes brittle | Over-washing, especially with IPA on a susceptible resin | Return to the resin maker’s maximum wash guidance; do not extend cycles by guesswork. |
| One side is softer or tackier | UV shadowing or contact with the platform/basket | Rotate or reposition for a second exposure and wash the previously obstructed surface. |
| Washer overflows | Part displacement exceeded the tank’s allowance | Stop, remove liquid safely, recalculate enclosed volume and use a larger tank or a different orientation. |
| Liquid remains in a long channel | Channel is too narrow or lacks a low-point drain | Flush with a syringe of clean solvent and redesign the next print with a more effective drain path. |
Handling used solvent and resin waste
Never pour liquid resin or resin-contaminated wash liquid into a household drain. The appropriate disposal route depends on the chemical and your location; use the solvent and resin SDS and your local hazardous-waste rules. Keep waste containers closed and labeled, and treat rags, gloves and filters contaminated with uncured resin as chemical waste until your local authority says otherwise.
Quick Recap
Before moving the model to curing, wipe drips from the station, close solvent containers and keep the work area ventilated. A clean, dry part and a controlled exposure are safer than trying to correct a sticky or contaminated surface after curing.
