Clean the earpads gently
With the headphones switched off and the USB cable disconnected, wipe the earpads with a soft, dry cloth or 99% water-based wipes. Sony’s UK care guidance specifies these options and says to let the headphones dry thoroughly at room temperature after cleaning: Sony Support: WH-1000XM6 care and cleaning.

Do not use alcohol, thinner, benzene, or similar solvents; Sony warns they may damage the finish or cause other problems. Do not wash or soak the pads, or apply household cleaners or heat. Sony does not recommend those methods.
Water, sweat, and skin oils can darken the earpads without affecting headphone performance. Sony recommends regular cleaning to maintain their condition but does not specify a schedule, so wipe them when they need it rather than following an unsupported fixed interval.

Wipe the headband and exterior
Use a soft, dry cloth on the headband and other exterior surfaces. Extend and retract the slider and rotate the earpads as needed to reach less accessible areas. Take care not to push dust or debris into the USB Type-C port or headphone cable input jack.
Wipe away sweat or other moisture promptly. Sony warns that moisture left on the headphones can cause metal parts to rust and earpads to deteriorate or become moldy. For moisture, Sony allows 99% water-based wipes; afterward, let the headphones dry thoroughly at room temperature.

Clean the microphone mesh without pushing debris inside
Debris, sweat, or moisture on the mesh in front of the microphones may impair noise cancelling or cause abnormal noise. Sony advises occasionally cleaning the mesh with a cotton swab. Work gently and avoid pushing dirt into the mesh or inside the headphones.

Sony advises against routine pad removal. If removal is necessary, switch off the headphones, disconnect the USB cable, and work away from iron sand or metal dust, which magnets may attract. Follow Sony’s model-specific instructions: Sony Australia: removing and installing WH-1000XM6 earpads.

- Pull each earpad straight out from the earcup, perpendicular to it.
- Check the left and right markings before reinstalling; fit each pad to its corresponding side.
- Align the pad’s claws with the earcup and press firmly at all five claws until they click into place.
When to seek a replacement
If a pad is worn or damaged, Sony says replacement methods depend on the headphone model and recommends contacting an authorized service center. A service fee may apply, and availability depends on stock. Check your local Sony support for current parts, service routes, and terms; these can vary by region.
