Clean retro running shoes one material at a time: brush off dry dirt first, then use the least moisture and gentlest cleaner that suits each panel. Mesh and fabric may tolerate careful hand-cleaning, but suede, nubuck and leather need material-specific care. Avoid soaking the shoes, machine-washing them or using heat to speed up drying.
What to check before cleaning
Retro runners often combine mesh, woven fabric and suede or leather overlays. A method that is suitable for one panel can stain, stiffen or damage another. Check the shoe’s care label and the maker’s guidance for the exact model before starting; ASICS notes that cleaning depends on the material. ASICS’s cleaning guide and New Balance’s care guidance both emphasize material-aware cleaning.

- Remove the laces and insoles if they come out easily. Clean them separately and let them dry before putting them back.
- Gather a soft-bristle shoe brush or clean toothbrush, a clean cloth or sponge, and only the cleaner appropriate for the shoe’s materials.
- Test a cleaner on an inconspicuous spot first if its label allows it. New Balance recommends testing detergent before broader use.
Clean the shoe panel by panel
1. Brush away dry dirt
Use a soft brush with light strokes to lift dust and loose dirt before adding moisture. A clean toothbrush can work in small areas. Avoid forceful scrubbing, especially on mesh and suede pile, where it can rough up the surface or push dirt deeper.

2. Clean the outsole separately
For the outsole, ASICS recommends a brush with warm water and mild soap. Work on the sole rather than letting soapy water run over the upper, then wipe away residue with a damp cloth or sponge.

3. Hand-clean mesh, fabric and canvas
Where the shoe’s care instructions allow it, gently wipe fabric, mesh or canvas with a damp sponge and mild soapy water. Work a small area at a time with light pressure; do not submerge the shoe. Adidas also cautions that unsuitable cleaning can damage woven and mesh materials, so avoid treating the upper as if it were a single, washable fabric. Adidas’s sneaker-cleaning guidance discusses this risk.
4. Treat suede and nubuck as delicate materials
Start by brushing suede or nubuck dry with a suede brush. If more cleaning is needed, use a cleaner specifically made for suede or nubuck and follow its label. ASICS and New Balance advise against ordinary soap and water on these materials because they may be damaged or discolored. New Balance Japan’s guidance also describes brushing away dust and dirt before using suede cleaner. ASICS, New Balance and New Balance Japan provide material-specific cautions.

5. Use leather-specific care
Do not use the mesh-cleaning method on leather. Choose a leather-specific cleaner and follow the shoe maker’s directions. New Balance warns that washing leather can cause severe discoloration and hardening; its general care guidance recommends specialty leather cleaner. New Balance Japan’s care guide explains the washing risk.
Dry the shoes without heat
For panels cleaned with soap or another cleaner, wipe away residue with a damp cloth where appropriate, then let the shoes air-dry fully. New Balance recommends 24 hours of air-drying in its general care guidance; that is a brand instruction, not a guarantee that every shoe will dry in that time. Do not tumble-dry New Balance shoes or use direct heat as a shortcut. New Balance’s care guidance advises against machine-washing and machine-drying its shoes and recommends air-drying.

Choose tools and cleaners by material

There is no universally safe sneaker cleaner for every retro runner. The shoe’s material and care instructions should determine what you use, and the cleaner’s label should determine how you apply it.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Soaking the whole shoe: ASICS advises against submerging shoes; use controlled, localized cleaning instead.
- Using one method on every panel: mesh, suede, nubuck and leather do not share the same moisture tolerance.
- Scrubbing harder to remove a mark: stronger friction can damage delicate pile or woven material.
- Machine-washing or tumble-drying: New Balance says not to machine-wash or machine-dry its shoes.
- Applying heat to speed drying: let the pair air-dry rather than using a heat source.
