For stuck-on food, soak it or simmer water with 1–2 tablespoons of baking soda for about 8–10 minutes. Avoid thermal shock, metal scouring pads, and abrasive cleaners; enameled cast iron does not need seasoning.
How do I clean my Le Creuset Dutch oven or skillet?
- Cool it completely. Let the cookware reach room temperature before washing. Putting a hot pan into cold water—or filling a hot pot with cold water—can cause thermal shock and crack the enamel.
- Wash gently. Use warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft non-metal sponge or brush. Le Creuset recommends soft natural or nylon cleaning tools.
- Rinse and dry. Rinse away the soap and dry the cookware thoroughly before storing it.
Hand washing is recommended. Le Creuset says its Dutch ovens are dishwasher-safe, but repeated dishwasher cycles may dull the enamel over time; the brand says this does not hinder cooking performance. Follow the care booklet supplied with your particular piece, especially if it has a specialized interior.

How do I get burnt food or oil residue off enameled cast iron?
Start with a warm soapy soak
For residue that does not come off with ordinary washing, fill the cooled cookware with warm soapy water and let it soak. Give the food time to soften, then clean with a soft sponge or brush.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Le Creuset recommends adding 1–2 tablespoons of baking soda to warm water in the cookware and bringing it to a simmer for about 8–10 minutes. Let the liquid cool, then drain it, rinse the pan, and dry it thoroughly. Do not pour cold water into hot cookware.

Address stains and marks gently
For heat stains, discoloration, or everyday buildup, Le Creuset lists its optional Pots and Pans Cleaner for enameled cast iron and stainless steel. The product page identifies an 8.5 fl. oz. bottle. Its use is not necessary for routine washing, for which the brand recommends mild dish soap.
For certain tough stains, oil residue, or marks, Le Creuset also names Bar Keepers Friend and a baking-soda-and-water paste. Use a gentle approach and follow the product directions; this is not a reason to scrub with an abrasive pad.

What should I avoid when cleaning Le Creuset enamel?
- Do not plunge hot cookware into cold water or fill a hot pot with cold water; the sudden temperature change can crack the enamel.
- Avoid metal cleaning pads and abrasive cleaners, which may damage the enamel surface.
- Do not use a metal utensil or scouring pad to attack stuck-on food; soften the residue with a soak or the baking-soda simmer instead.
- Do not apply the seasoning routine used for raw cast iron. Enameled cast iron does not need seasoning.
- If the interior is black satin enamel, do not scrub away its natural patina. Le Creuset says the patina develops over time, enhances cooking results, and should not be scrubbed off.
Does the interior finish change how I care for it?
Le Creuset distinguishes its smooth, stain-resistant sand interior enamel from black satin interior enamel, which is semi-matte and lightly textured. Neither finish needs seasoning. Black satin enamel develops a patina; preserve it while cleaning gently. These enamel surfaces are different from raw or seasoned cast iron, which is unfinished metal and needs seasoning to create a nonstick layer.

Enamel can resist staining, chipping, and cracking, but that does not mean it is immune to damage. Le Creuset warns that thermal shock may crack it and that repeated dishwasher use may dull the finish. Sand-colored enamel is described as stain-resistant, not stain-proof.
