Golden Goose’s care guidance calls for manual cleaning with mild or delicate detergents, limited moisture, and room-temperature air-drying. The safest method depends on whether the upper is smooth leather, suede, or decorated with glitter, Swarovski elements, pearls, or other fragile details. Clean away dirt while accepting that the brand’s distressed, “lived-in” finish is intentional; trying to make every pair look factory-new can damage the materials.
What Golden Goose’s care guidance says first
The official care instructions give one overriding rule: “Avoid the washing machine and immersion in water: opt for manual cleaning with mild detergents.” A machine combines soaking, agitation, heat and pressure that can distort the shoe, loosen adhesives, transfer color, or harm decorative details. Submerging the sneaker creates similar risks and can leave leather, suede, lining and footbeds damp for too long.

Use the least aggressive method that solves the actual problem. Dry brushing is preferable for loose dust; a barely damp cloth is appropriate for a small mark on a suitable surface; a soft-bristle brush and neutral detergent are intended for soles and midsoles. An upper with glitter, Swarovski elements or pearls needs a different approach from a plain leather panel.

Golden Goose sneakers are deliberately finished to look worn. Scuffs, tonal variation and other signs of the design are not automatically dirt. The goal of care is to remove harmful grime, sweat and fresh spills while preserving the construction and intended appearance, not to erase every mark.

Before cleaning: identify the material and the problem
Inspect the entire sneaker in good light before applying any product. Check the upper, tongue, heel, overlays, sole edge, insole and laces separately. Look for a material label, the product information supplied with the pair, or the model’s official description if you need to confirm whether a panel is leather, suede, fabric or an embellishment.
| Area or issue | Preferred first treatment | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Smooth leather | Ventilation, then a delicate product used sparingly on a soft cloth | Aggressive soap, abrasive brush, excess water and plastic wrapping |
| Suede | Brush away dry dust and dirt before it accumulates; use a rubber suede brush for suitable marks | Soaking, heavy wet cleaning, hard scrubbing and assuming protectant makes suede stainproof |
| Glitter, Swarovski or pearl details | Lightly dab with a slightly damp, lint-free cloth | Rubbing, abrasive cloths, brushes and contact with sharp surfaces |
| Soles and midsoles | Soft-bristle brush or toothbrush with neutral detergent | Hard bristles, forceful scraping and flooding the shoe |
| Laces | Hand-wash with mild detergent, rinse and air-dry flat | Machine washing, twisting while wet or returning them damp |
| Fresh spill | Blot or dab promptly with a suitable soft cloth | Waiting for the stain to set or promising that every mark can be removed |
If the issue is a split seam, detached sole, deep gouge, badly worn heel lining or another structural failure, stop treating it as a cleaning job. Moisture and brushing cannot repair damage and may make a repair more difficult.
What to gather
- Crumpled, clean paper for supporting the shape.
- A soft-bristle brush; a clean, soft toothbrush can serve for the sole edge.
- A lint-free cloth for delicate panels.
- A second soft cloth for patting surfaces dry.
- Mild detergent for laces and a neutral detergent for soles and midsoles.
- A material-appropriate delicate cleaner, used only after its label and the sneaker’s material cautions have been checked.
- A rubber suede brush if the shoe has suede.
- A well-ventilated, room-temperature place where the sneakers can remain undisturbed.
A soft-bristle sneaker cleaning kit with a mild cleaner can be convenient, but an “all-purpose” label does not establish that the product is safe for every upper. Read the product directions, keep cleaner off incompatible details, and test an inconspicuous area only if the product instructions permit it.

1. Remove laces and support the shoe
Take out the laces so you can reach the tongue and eyelets without dragging dirt across them. Put crumpled paper inside each sneaker before cleaning. The paper helps the shoe hold its shape and gives the upper a firmer surface while you work. Do not pack it so tightly that it stretches the panels or seams.
2. Deal with the laces separately
Hand-wash the laces in mild detergent. Rinse thoroughly so detergent residue does not stiffen or discolor them. Pat them with a soft cloth, then lay them flat to air-dry. Do not put them back through the eyelets while they are damp; trapped moisture can migrate into the tongue and lining.

3. Remove loose dirt while dry
Brush loose dust from the sole edge and appropriate upper panels before introducing moisture. Use light strokes rather than repeated pressure. For suede, dry brushing is the first-line step because accumulated grit can become embedded and because wet scrubbing can alter the nap. Do not brush glitter, Swarovski elements or pearls.
4. Clean soles and midsoles
Apply a small amount of neutral detergent to a soft-bristle brush or toothbrush, not directly onto the shoe. Work around the sole and midsole with controlled strokes. Keep the foam and liquid concentrated on the rubber or painted sole area, away from the upper and decorative panels. Wipe away residue with a soft cloth and pat the area dry.
5. Clean the insole only when needed
The care guide describes cleaning insoles in a similar gentle manner. Use minimal moisture and avoid saturating the footbed or its underside. After cleaning, leave the insole out until it is completely dry. Replacing it while damp can trap humidity inside the sneaker and create odor or material damage.
6. Treat the upper according to its material
Do not use one method across the whole upper. Smooth leather should be handled with ventilation and a delicate, purpose-made product rather than aggressive soap. Apply product sparingly to a soft cloth and work gently over the affected area. Avoid abrasive brushes and vigorous rubbing, which can mark the finish.
For suede, remove dust and dirt with a suitable brush before they accumulate. Golden Goose’s guide identifies a rubber Reviver brush as a recommended tool. If you use a suede protectant such as the guide’s Protecter spray, follow its label and understand that protection may help reduce liquid staining; it does not make suede waterproof or stainproof.

For glitter, Swarovski or pearl details, use a delicate lint-free cloth that is only slightly damp. Dab the dirt away without rubbing. These elements can be damaged by abrasion, pressure and contact with sharp or rough surfaces. Keep brushes, paper towels with a coarse texture and fingernails away from them.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute7. Address fresh marks promptly
Fresh stains are generally easier to address before they dry and bond to the material. Blot or dab rather than scrubbing. Match the cloth and product to the material, and stop if color transfers to the cloth, the surface changes, or the mark spreads. The official guidance does not promise complete stain removal, so a persistent mark is a reason to seek specialist advice rather than escalate to harsher chemicals.
8. Wipe away residue and let the sneakers dry naturally
Use a clean, soft cloth to remove remaining cleaner from areas that can safely be wiped. Then let the sneakers air-dry at room temperature for as long as necessary before wearing them again. Do not use a hair dryer, radiator, heated vent, direct heater or other concentrated heat. Rapid or uneven heating can dry leather too aggressively, deform components and stress adhesives.
9. Reassemble only when everything is dry
Check the upper, lining, sole edge, insole and laces by touch. If any part feels cool, damp or clammy, continue drying. Replace the dry insole, thread the dry laces and remove the paper only when the shoe has returned to a stable, dry condition.
Material-specific care in more detail
Leather
Leather benefits from ventilation after wear. Golden Goose advises leaving leather or suede sneakers in the air for a few hours so residual humidity can dissipate. Do not seal leather in a plastic bag, which can trap moisture. For deeper cleaning, choose a delicate product intended for leather and avoid aggressive soaps and abrasive brushes. Work on small sections with light pressure; over-cleaning can change the finish even when the dirt is gone.

Suede
Brush suede before dust accumulates. A rubber suede brush can lift surface dirt while preserving the nap better than a hard brush or wet scrub. If a liquid has already marked the shoe, do not respond by soaking the whole panel to create an even color. Allow the area to dry naturally, then reassess with the appropriate brush. A protectant may help prevent liquid stains, but it is not a guarantee against staining, discoloration or water penetration.
Glitter, Swarovski and pearls
These decorations are among the least tolerant of friction. Dab with a slightly damp lint-free cloth and leave the area alone if the dirt does not lift easily. Never use a brush, abrasive sponge, sharp tool or forceful circular rubbing. Store and handle the sneakers so embellishments do not scrape against each other or against rough shelving.
White inserts and light-colored panels
Light areas show fresh marks quickly, so prompt, gentle dabbing is preferable to a later aggressive treatment. Keep the cloth clean as you work so you do not redeposit soil. A brighter appearance is not worth damaging the coating, stitching or adjacent colored material, and no method guarantees that an old stain will disappear.
How to dry Golden Goose sneakers safely
Natural drying is part of the cleaning process, not an optional finishing step. Leave the shoes at room temperature in a dry, ventilated area. Keep them away from radiators, hair dryers, heated floors, direct heat and prolonged strong sunlight. Turn or reposition them only if needed to improve airflow, and keep the paper support in place while the upper is drying.

Drying time varies with the amount of moisture, lining, weather and ventilation. The official wording is to let the shoes air-dry “for as long as necessary.” A sneaker that feels dry on the outside can still hold moisture in the tongue, footbed or padding, so do not judge readiness by the outer surface alone.

Everyday handling that prevents damage
Put them on and take them off without crushing the heel
Loosen the laces enough before putting the sneakers on and taking them off. Forcing a foot through a tightly laced opening can collapse the heel counter and stress the structure. Use your hands to guide the shoe rather than stepping on its back.
Ventilate after wear
After wearing leather or suede sneakers, leave them in the air for a few hours. This allows residual humidity from the foot and environment to dissipate. Avoid closing damp shoes immediately in a box, bag or tightly packed wardrobe.
Rotate use when possible
Allowing a pair to dry fully between wears reduces the amount of cleaning needed. This is especially useful when the sneakers were worn in rain, high humidity or conditions that left the lining damp.
Storage between wears and for longer periods
Store the sneakers side by side in a cool, dry place away from heat and humidity. Do not stack them, because soles, embellishments or structured panels can press against one another and mark the finish. When the pair will not be worn for a while, place crumpled paper inside to help maintain shape. Replace paper if it becomes damp or loses its support.
Avoid plastic bags that restrict ventilation, particularly for leather. Keep glitter and other fragile details from rubbing against rough surfaces. Before storing, make sure the soles, upper, insole and laces are dry; storage preserves a clean, dry pair but cannot correct moisture already trapped inside.
Choosing between home care and professional repair
| Condition | Appropriate next step | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Loose dust or ordinary surface soil | Dry brushing and gentle manual cleaning | Low moisture and low abrasion address the surface problem |
| Dirty sole or midsole | Soft-bristle brush with neutral detergent | The sole can tolerate controlled brushing better than delicate uppers |
| Small mark on plain leather | Material-appropriate delicate product and soft cloth | Avoids aggressive soap and abrasive tools |
| Dust on suede | Suitable rubber suede brush | Dry lifting is safer for the nap than soaking |
| Dirty glitter, Swarovski or pearl detail | Slightly damp lint-free cloth, dabbing only | Rubbing can damage the decoration |
| Detached sole, split stitching, worn heel lining or structural failure | Check Golden Goose’s current Repair service in your region | Cleaning cannot restore construction |
Golden Goose’s US repair information describes services including full resoling, stitching repair, sanitization, stain protection and replacement laces. Its US FAQ describes three package levels: Refresh, which includes washing, fussbett replacement and an optional lace change; Resole, which adds a complete resole to Refresh-related services; and Restore, which adds heel-lining replacement and toe reinforcement to the Resole services.
The US FAQ says online repair is for sneakers and is also offered in selected stores. It also states that glitter elements cannot be repaired through that Repair service. Those details are regional and can change, so check the current service description, eligibility, pricing and shipping terms for your country before sending a pair.
Common mistakes and safer fixes
- Mistake: machine-washing the sneakers. Safer fix: clean by hand with mild or delicate detergents.
- Mistake: soaking the entire shoe. Safer fix: use targeted, low-moisture treatment matched to the material.
- Mistake: scrubbing every panel with one brush. Safer fix: reserve a soft brush for suitable soles and dry suede care; dab decorated panels with a lint-free cloth.
- Mistake: using aggressive soap or abrasive tools on leather. Safer fix: choose a delicate, purpose-made product and light pressure.
- Mistake: treating suede protectant as waterproofing. Safer fix: regard it only as a product intended to help prevent liquid stains, not as a guarantee.
- Mistake: drying with a hair dryer or radiator. Safer fix: air-dry at room temperature until every layer is dry.
- Mistake: replacing damp insoles or laces. Safer fix: dry them completely before reassembly.
- Mistake: trying to clean a structural failure. Safer fix: use the brand’s repair channel or a qualified footwear repair professional.
A practical decision checklist
- Is the problem loose dust, a surface stain, sole grime or structural damage?
- Which materials and decorations are present on the affected area?
- Can the problem be addressed dry, with less risk than wet cleaning?
- Have you chosen a mild or neutral product that is compatible with that material?
- Can you keep moisture away from adjacent leather, suede and embellishments?
- Can the sneaker remain at room temperature until the upper, lining, insole and laces are fully dry?
- If the sole, stitching or heel structure is damaged, have you stopped cleaning and checked repair options instead?
When to stop cleaning
Stop if color begins transferring, a finish becomes dull or sticky, suede nap changes noticeably, an embellishment loosens, or moisture spreads into the lining. Continuing to apply product rarely reverses those changes. Blot what you can, let the shoe dry naturally and seek advice from Golden Goose or a qualified repair specialist.
For normal dirt, the safest routine remains deliberately conservative: support the shape with paper, clean laces and soles separately, use material-specific treatment on the upper, dab fragile decorations, and allow unrestricted room-temperature drying. That approach protects the sneaker without fighting the lived-in character built into its design.
