First check the care label or instructions for your exact model: machine-washing, soaking and removable-part care vary by shoe, and excess heat can deform foam.
Before cleaning, check the shoe’s materials and care instructions
Look at the label or the manufacturer’s page for the exact model before getting the shoes wet. A foam shell may be attached to textile, leather, straps, glued sections or a finish that needs different treatment. Do not assume that a cleaning method approved for one part or model is safe for the whole shoe.

Manufacturer instructions differ. TEVA advises hand cleaning unless its product team approves machine washing; Skechers says its Foamies should be hand-washed, while machine washing applies only to styles specifically identified as washable. Those brand-specific permissions do not apply automatically to other foam camp shoes.

- Remove loose dirt. Brush or wipe the shoes with a soft cloth or soft-bristled brush. Use light pressure on textured foam, seams and outsole grooves. A soft cloth is enough for smooth areas; a brush can help with dirt in grooves.
- Clean the foam gently. Mix cool or lukewarm water with a small amount of mild soap. Wipe or lightly brush the surface. TEVA recommends lukewarm or cold water with mild soap for most synthetic sandals, shoes and boots; follow your shoe’s own instructions if they differ.
- Do not soak by default. Avoid prolonged soaking unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it. Water tolerance can depend on the shoe’s construction and attached materials.
- Remove soap residue. Wipe the shoe with clean water or rinse it gently, taking care not to leave soap behind.
- Handle detachable parts separately. If the instructions allow you to remove a liner or insole, clean it according to its own care guidance and let it dry fully before putting it back. A permission for one brand’s liner is not a general rule for all removable liners.
- Air-dry in shade. Let the shoes dry at room temperature in a well-ventilated place, away from prolonged direct sun and artificial heat.
What can damage foam camp shoes
- Unapproved machine washing: Foamies from Skechers are hand-wash-only according to its support guidance; its machine-washable advice is limited to styles identified as washable. TEVA likewise advises against machine washing without product-team approval.
- High heat and prolonged sun: Avoid tumble dryers, heaters and radiators. Camminare and Joybees warn that excess heat can deform or shrink EVA footwear; Joybees also advises drying away from direct sunlight.
- Harsh cleaners and abrasive tools: Avoid bleach, strong solvents, aggressive chemicals, abrasive scrubbers and hard brushes. Manufacturer guidance favors mild soap and soft cleaning tools.
- One method for every component: Textile liners, leather, straps, adhesives and surface finishes may have different care needs from the foam shell. Check their instructions rather than applying the shell-cleaning method automatically.
Why brand-specific instructions matter
Care directions are not interchangeable. Camminare permits washing specified removable liners in lukewarm water up to 40°C, while Joybees describes machine-washing its own removable liners. These are product-specific allowances, not permission to machine-wash other liners or the shoes themselves.

Likewise, HOKA’s warnings about soaking relate to particular trail-shoe constructions, while Joybees cautions against prolonged water exposure for its EVA footwear. Salomon’s advice to avoid machine-washing and to dry at room temperature away from sun or excessive heat is for its hiking shoes, not a blanket rule for camp shoes. Use those examples as reminders to check construction-specific guidance, not as replacements for your model’s care instructions.

Let shoes and any separately washed liner dry completely before wearing or storing them. Store them in a cool, dry place rather than leaving them in strong sun or near a heat source. If dirt or odor remains, repeat a gentle clean rather than escalating to harsher chemicals, vigorous scrubbing or heat.
