How to Clean and Care for Ceramic and Nonstick Bakeware Without Damage

The safest routine is simple: identify the surface, let the bakeware cool naturally, wash with warm soapy water and a soft sponge when hand washing is allowed, and soak stuck-on food instead of scraping it. Dishwasher permission is not universal. Ceramic or stoneware, nonstick-coated metal, and ceramic-coated cookware can have different rules, so check the exact item’s label or current manufacturer guide before choosing a dishwasher cycle or cleaner.

Use the product-specific instructions linked below as the final authority. They take priority over a general rule based only on the word “ceramic” or “nonstick.”

Identify the surface before you clean it

“Ceramic bakeware” can describe solid ceramic or stoneware, while “ceramic nonstick” usually means a coating on cookware. Traditional nonstick bakeware is generally a coating on metal. Those constructions tolerate heat, detergents and scrubbing differently.

Ceramic or stoneware bakeware

Solid ceramic and stoneware pieces are rigid and can be damaged by sudden temperature changes. KitchenAid’s ceramic-bakeware guidance warns against putting hot bakeware into cold water and lists oven cleaners, harsh detergents, chlorine bleach, steel wool and nylon scrubbing pads among products or tools to avoid. Its guidance says the bakeware is dishwasher safe but recommends hand washing. Read the current instructions for your specific shape and collection at KitchenAid’s ceramic-bakeware care page.

  • NONSTICK INTERIOR: A complete collection of carbon steel bakeware with a nonstick surface that's both easy to grease and convenient to clean. • QUICK HEAT RESPONSE: Carbon steel construction responds to heat quickly as it allows even baking and roasting from uniform heat distribution
  • WARP-RESISTANT: Minimally raised edges and rolled rims resist warping to maintain the pan's shape after placing it under high temperature.
  • OVEN SAFE: Up to 450°F

Nonstick-coated metal bakeware

Metal bakeware with a nonstick finish needs a nonabrasive approach so the coating is not subjected to unnecessary wear. Calphalon describes some of its bakeware lines as dishwasher safe, yet recommends hand washing with a soft, nonabrasive sponge and cooling the item before washing. Its bakeware families do not all share one rule; check the line-specific information in the Calphalon bakeware use-and-care support.

Le Creuset gives a different instruction for its cited nonstick metal bakeware: it is not suitable for the dishwasher. That difference is why a rule from one coated-metal pan cannot be transferred to another. Its care page separates nonstick metal instructions from stoneware instructions at Le Creuset’s care and use guide.

Ceramic-coated nonstick cookware

Ceramic nonstick cookware is not automatically equivalent to ceramic baking dishes. All-Clad’s cited ceramic nonstick guidance calls for hand washing with warm, soapy water and a soft sponge or cloth. It says dishwasher heat and detergents can degrade that coating. Use the cookware instructions at All-Clad’s ceramic nonstick care page rather than a stoneware dishwasher rule.

Quick comparison of care rules

Item type or cited product family Dishwasher information Hand-washing approach Special caution
KitchenAid ceramic or stoneware bakeware Described as dishwasher safe; hand washing is recommended. Warm, soapy water and a gentle sponge or cloth. Prevent thermal shock; avoid oven cleaners, harsh detergents, chlorine bleach, steel wool and nylon scrubbing pads.
Calphalon nonstick bakeware Varies by bakeware line; some lines are described as dishwasher safe. Hand washing with a soft, nonabrasive sponge is recommended. Let the bakeware cool before washing.
Le Creuset stoneware Described as dishwasher safe. Follow the stoneware section of the care guide. Stoneware instructions do not establish the same rule for its nonstick metal bakeware.
Le Creuset cited nonstick metal bakeware Not suitable for the dishwasher. Use the nonstick-metal instructions in the care guide. Do not substitute the stoneware dishwasher rule.
All-Clad ceramic nonstick cookware Hand wash only in the cited guidance. Warm, soapy water with a soft sponge or cloth. Dishwasher heat and detergents can degrade the coating.

Use this safe cleaning sequence

  1. Find the item’s instructions. Check the printed label, packaging or the manufacturer’s current care page. Confirm the material, whether your exact line is dishwasher approved, and which cleaners or tools are prohibited.
  2. Let the bakeware cool naturally. Do not move a hot dish or pan straight into cold water. KitchenAid and Calphalon identify cracking or warping as possible results of that temperature shock, and All-Clad also says to cool ceramic nonstick cookware before cleaning.
  3. Prepare warm or hot soapy water. When the instructions permit hand washing, use ordinary dish soap and a soft sponge, cloth or dishcloth. The goal is to loosen food without introducing an abrasive surface.
  4. Soak instead of scraping. For ceramic or stoneware with baked-on residue, KitchenAid recommends hot, soapy water for 15 to 20 minutes, or longer if needed. A longer soak and a second gentle pass are safer than forceful scraping.
  5. Wash with light pressure. Work around corners, handles and textured areas with the soft side of the sponge or a cloth. If residue remains, return the item to the soapy water rather than switching to steel wool, a scouring pad or an unapproved chemical.
  6. Rinse and dry as directed. Remove soap thoroughly, then dry in the manner specified by the item’s guide. Before storing, look over the surface for residue, chips, cracks, or changes that need a manufacturer’s answer.

How to clean ceramic and stoneware bakeware

Everyday washing

Once the dish has cooled, wash it in warm, soapy water with a soft sponge or cloth. Keep the sponge free of trapped grit that could scratch the surface. Do not reach for an oven cleaner, harsh detergent, chlorine bleach, steel wool or a nylon scrubbing pad when the KitchenAid guidance for your piece prohibits them.

Baked-on sauce, grease or dough

Fill the cooled dish with hot, soapy water and leave it for 15 to 20 minutes. If the residue has not softened, extend the soak rather than applying more pressure. Drain, wipe gently, rinse, and repeat the soak if necessary. This method addresses stuck food while avoiding the mechanical force that can mark a glazed or ceramic surface.

Thermal-shock prevention

Never pour cold water into a hot ceramic dish or place a hot dish under a cold tap. Set it aside until it reaches a safer temperature, then begin the soak. The same caution applies when moving a dish from an oven or warm surface to a sink.

Dishwasher choice

KitchenAid describes its ceramic and stoneware bakeware as dishwasher safe, but still recommends hand washing. If you choose the dishwasher for an item explicitly approved for it, follow the placement and cycle instructions for that model. If the guide is silent or the piece is from a different line, hand washing avoids assuming that KitchenAid’s permission applies elsewhere.

How to clean nonstick-coated metal bakeware

Hand washing is the conservative default

Allow the metal pan to cool, then wash it with warm, soapy water and a soft, nonabrasive sponge. Calphalon recommends this approach even while identifying dishwasher-safe bakeware lines. Hand washing reduces exposure to the heat and detergent conditions that some manufacturers discourage.

When dishwasher use is allowed

Calphalon’s care information varies by bakeware line, so identify the exact collection before loading it. In contrast, Le Creuset’s cited nonstick metal bakeware instructions say the item is not suitable for a dishwasher. Treat those as separate product rules, not as a general verdict on every nonstick pan.

Cleaning food that will not release

Start with a warm, soapy soak after the pan has cooled. Wipe with the soft side of a sponge, rinse and dry. Avoid escalating to abrasive pads or harsh cleaners unless the item’s own guide explicitly permits them; a cleaner that is acceptable for an uncoated metal tray can be inappropriate for a nonstick finish.

How to care for ceramic nonstick cookware

Although it may look like ceramic bakeware, ceramic nonstick cookware has a coating that the manufacturer treats separately. All-Clad’s cited instructions specify hand washing with warm, soapy water and a soft sponge or cloth. They warn that dishwasher heat and detergents can degrade the coating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For that type of item, cool it first, wash by hand, rinse thoroughly and dry it according to the care guide. Do not use the dishwasher merely because another ceramic dish in your kitchen is labeled dishwasher safe. The surface construction, coating and tested care instructions are different.

How to decide whether your item can go in the dishwasher

Use this decision path every time you are unsure:

  1. Identify the construction. Record whether it is solid ceramic or stoneware, nonstick-coated metal, or ceramic-coated cookware. “Ceramic” alone is not enough.
  2. Identify the exact product line. Manufacturer guidance can differ within a brand, particularly for nonstick metal bakeware.
  3. Look for an explicit dishwasher statement. “Dishwasher safe,” “hand wash only,” and “not suitable for the dishwasher” are not interchangeable. If no statement is available, contact the manufacturer or choose hand washing.
  4. Check the recommended method even when dishwasher use is permitted. KitchenAid and Calphalon both describe dishwasher-safe examples while recommending hand washing. That recommendation reflects the care method they prefer for the finish.
  5. Follow the strictest relevant warning. If the instructions prohibit abrasive tools, harsh cleaners or dishwasher detergents, do not substitute a general kitchen-cleaning rule.

What not to do

  • Do not shock hot bakeware with cold water. Cooling first helps avoid the cracking or warping risk identified in the cited ceramic and nonstick guidance.
  • Do not scrape aggressively at hardened food. Soak with hot, soapy water and repeat a gentle wash instead.
  • Do not assume all ceramic products share one dishwasher rule. Solid stoneware, ceramic nonstick cookware and ceramic-colored coatings are different categories.
  • Do not use prohibited chemicals or tools. For KitchenAid ceramic bakeware, the listed exclusions include oven cleaners, harsh detergents, chlorine bleach, steel wool and nylon scrubbing pads.
  • Do not generalize from one nonstick pan to another. Calphalon’s bakeware guidance varies by line, while Le Creuset’s cited nonstick metal bakeware is not dishwasher suitable.

Troubleshooting common cleaning problems

Residue remains after one wash

Let the item cool completely, cover the residue with hot, soapy water and soak again. For ceramic or stoneware, use the 15-to-20-minute interval recommended by KitchenAid, extending it when necessary. Use several gentle cycles rather than one aggressive scrubbing session.

You are unsure whether a cleaner is safe

Do not test an unlisted chemical on a visible area. Return to the item’s care page and use warm soapy water with a soft sponge if hand washing is allowed. For KitchenAid ceramic bakeware, avoid the specific cleaners and pads listed in its guidance.

The dishwasher label is missing

Search the manufacturer’s current guide by the exact product name or model. If the instructions cannot be confirmed, hand wash after cooling. This is especially important for nonstick metal lines, where dishwasher permission can vary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The surface looks changed after washing

Stop experimenting with stronger detergents or harsher tools. Document the product line, the cleaning method and the visible change, then ask the manufacturer for care or replacement guidance. A generic rule for a different coating cannot diagnose the condition of your item.

Extra checks before and after washing

Before filling a sink or dishwasher, turn the piece over and look for a model name, collection mark or care symbol. Packaging often contains the most precise dishwasher statement, while a current manufacturer page can clarify an older label. Keep a photograph of that information if the marking is likely to fade or become hidden by storage.

Separate cleaning decisions from cooking decisions. A pan that is safe at oven temperature is not automatically safe for a dishwasher’s heat or detergent. Likewise, a smooth appearance does not prove that a coating can tolerate a scouring pad. The relevant question is always what the maker tested for that construction and line.

When several pieces are in the sink, wash the least abrasive surfaces first and keep them from rubbing against gritty cookware or utensils. Use a clean soft sponge rather than one carrying particles from a cast-iron scrubber. This does not replace the manufacturer’s instructions, but it prevents avoidable contact with abrasive debris.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make a care card for each piece

If your kitchen contains several materials, write four details on a label or in a note for each item:

  • Surface: ceramic or stoneware, nonstick-coated metal, or ceramic nonstick cookware.
  • Dishwasher status: permitted, hand wash only, not suitable, or unconfirmed.
  • Approved tools and cleaners: for example, a soft sponge or cloth; note any prohibited abrasives or chemicals.
  • Special steps: cool-before-washing guidance and the recommended soak method for stuck food.

This small record prevents a common mistake: putting a hand-wash-only ceramic nonstick pan into the dishwasher because a separate stoneware dish is dishwasher safe. It also keeps line-specific instructions available when packaging has been discarded.

A practical decision tree for a busy cleanup

  1. Is it still hot? Set it aside and allow natural cooling. Do not use cold water to speed the process.
  2. Is the surface known? If not, pause and identify whether it is stoneware, coated metal or ceramic-coated cookware.
  3. Is the dishwasher status explicit? Use the dishwasher only when the exact guide says it is allowed. Otherwise hand wash.
  4. Is food stuck? Cover it with hot, soapy water and soak. For KitchenAid ceramic or stoneware, begin with 15 to 20 minutes and extend the soak when needed.
  5. Is residue still present? Repeat the gentle cycle. Do not switch to a prohibited chemical or abrasive tool because the first pass was slow.
  6. Is there damage? Stop using stronger methods and contact the manufacturer with the item’s line, care method and photographs.

Frequently asked cleaning questions

Can I put hot ceramic bakeware straight into the sink?

No. Let it cool naturally first. KitchenAid warns that moving hot ceramic bakeware into cold water can contribute to cracking, and the same thermal-shock principle is why a gradual cool-down is the safer routine.

How long should ceramic bakeware soak?

KitchenAid recommends hot, soapy water for 15 to 20 minutes, or as long as needed, for stuck-on food. If residue remains, repeat or extend the soak rather than applying force.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is every ceramic dish dishwasher safe?

No. Solid stoneware, ceramic nonstick cookware and other coated products can have different instructions. Even when a product is described as dishwasher safe, its maker may recommend hand washing.

Can I use bleach on ceramic bakeware?

Only if the exact care guide permits it. KitchenAid’s cited ceramic-bakeware guidance lists chlorine bleach among the products to avoid, along with oven cleaners and harsh detergents.

Can I use steel wool on baked-on food?

Do not use it when the item’s guide prohibits abrasive tools. Soak with hot, soapy water and use a soft sponge or cloth instead. KitchenAid specifically lists steel wool and nylon scrubbing pads among the tools to avoid for its ceramic bakeware.

Why does hand washing matter if a pan is labeled dishwasher safe?

“Dishwasher safe” means the manufacturer permits that use; it does not necessarily mean it is the preferred method. KitchenAid and Calphalon describe dishwasher-safe examples while recommending hand washing, and All-Clad warns that dishwasher heat and detergents can degrade its ceramic nonstick coating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do when two pieces from the same brand have different labels?

Follow each item’s exact line or model instructions. Brand-level assumptions are unreliable, especially for nonstick metal bakeware, where Calphalon’s guidance varies by line and Le Creuset gives a separate non-dishwasher instruction for its cited nonstick metal bakeware.

Can I use a cleaner made for an uncoated metal pan?

Not automatically. A cleaner or scrubber suitable for uncoated metal may be too harsh for a nonstick finish or prohibited on ceramic. Check the item’s guide and default to warm soapy water with a soft sponge when hand washing is allowed.

What if the manufacturer’s care page is unavailable?

Do not guess from appearance. Look for the printed model information, packaging or an archived manual, and contact the manufacturer if necessary. Until the dishwasher status and approved cleaners are confirmed, cool the piece and hand wash gently.

Can nonstick bakeware go in the dishwasher?

Only when the exact product line is explicitly approved. Calphalon describes some dishwasher-safe lines but recommends hand washing, while Le Creuset’s cited nonstick metal bakeware is not suitable for a dishwasher.

What is the safest way to remove baked-on grease?

Allow the bakeware to cool, cover the residue with hot, soapy water, soak, and wipe gently with a soft sponge. Repeat the soak rather than scraping forcefully or choosing a harsher cleaner.

Is ceramic nonstick the same as stoneware?

No. Stoneware is a solid ceramic material; ceramic nonstick generally has a coating. All-Clad’s ceramic nonstick guidance calls for hand washing because dishwasher heat and detergents can degrade the coating.

The Bottom Line

Identify the construction and exact product line before cleaning. Cool every hot piece naturally, use warm soapy water and a soft sponge when hand washing is allowed, and soak stuck-on food instead of scraping. Dishwasher permission is product-specific, and a manufacturer’s hand-washing recommendation still matters even when dishwasher use is allowed.

When instructions are missing, choose the conservative path: hand wash gently, avoid abrasive tools and harsh chemicals, and ask the maker before experimenting.
