What you need before you start
Gather the supplies Bose lists for headphone care: diluted dish soap in warm water, a clean microfiber cloth or paper towels, rubbing alcohol for the plastic exterior, a soft-bristled toothbrush or electronics-cleaning brush, and optional tweezers for surface lint. You do not need a specialized pad-washing machine or a large amount of liquid.

| Supply | Where it is used | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Diluted dish soap and warm water | Ear cushions and padded headband | Apply with a cloth that has been wrung out until damp, not wet |
| Clean microfiber cloth or paper towel | Cushions, headband and dry inner screen | Use a dry section for the inner screen |
| Rubbing alcohol | Plastic exterior only | Put a small amount on a paper towel; do not use it as a cushion cleaner |
| Soft-bristled brush | Residue around charging ports and buttons | Brush gently without forcing debris into an opening |
| Tweezers | Loose hair or lint on an accessible surface | Never push tweezers inside the headphone |
Before handling the cushions, place the headphones on a clean, dry surface. Work with the headset disconnected from a charger and avoid creating a situation in which water can run toward an opening. Bose’s cleaning guidance is the reference for the procedure and precautions: How to clean headphones and make them last.

Bose advises wiping headphones at least once a week, especially after workouts. Sweat can reach the cushion foam and contribute to odor or discoloration. That weekly suggestion is general guidance, not a tested interval for every QuietComfort model, climate or user. If you wear the headphones during exercise, in hot weather or for long shifts, clean them whenever visible moisture or residue appears rather than waiting for a calendar day.

A short wipe after a sweaty session and a more careful cushion removal once a week are practical ways to separate routine upkeep from a deep clean. Cleaning more often is reasonable when several people use the headset, but the cloth should remain only lightly damp and the electronics should never be wetted.
Step-by-step: clean the ear cushions without wetting the electronics
1. Remove each cushion
Hold one earcup and gently pull the top of the cushion away from the earcup. Work around the edge rather than yanking the foam. Removing the cushion exposes both sides for cleaning and prevents liquid from being trapped against the earcup.
2. Prepare a barely damp soapy cloth
Mix a small amount of dish soap into warm water. Dip a clean cloth, then wring it thoroughly. The cloth should feel damp, not wet enough to drip when squeezed. Excess water is the main avoidable hazard because the earcup contains electronics below its inner screen.

3. Wipe the front and back
Use small circular motions over the visible cushion surface, then clean the reverse side that faces the earcup. Use light pressure so you lift skin oil and sweat without stretching the synthetic covering or crushing the foam. If a spot remains, make another pass with the same damp-cloth method instead of flooding the cushion.

4. Clean the padded headband
Use the same wrung-out, soapy cloth on the padded portion of the headband. Keep the cloth away from seams, controls and openings as you work. Wipe away soap residue with a separate cloth that is only slightly damp, then leave the headband to dry naturally.
5. Keep the inner screen dry
Do not put water or alcohol on the inner headphone screen. Bose warns that moisture can damage the electronics beneath it. If the screen is dusty, wipe it with a dry cloth only. Do not scrub through the screen or press hard enough to deform it.
6. Wipe the plastic exterior separately
For the hard plastic outside of the headphones, Bose directs users to put a small amount of rubbing alcohol on a paper towel. Wipe the plastic gently and keep the alcohol away from the cushion material, inner screen, seams and openings. Alcohol belongs on the exterior housing in this procedure, not on the pads.
7. Clear residue around ports and buttons
Use a soft-bristled brush around the charging port, buttons and other exterior recesses. Brush outward so loosened particles leave the opening. Tweezers can lift a visible strand of hair or lint from a surface, but do not insert them into the port, button gap or earcup.

8. Air-dry completely
Set the cushions aside in a clean, ventilated place until they are fully dry. Do not reinstall them while the covering or foam feels cool, damp or tacky. Avoid high heat that could distort the cushion or its adhesive. Bose’s process is air drying; the guide does not specify a timed drying period because drying depends on how much moisture was used and the surrounding conditions.
9. Reinstall only when everything is dry
Once the cushions and headband are dry, check that no cloth fibers or loose lint remain. Refit the cushions as described in the installation section below. If moisture has reached the inner screen or an opening, stop and allow the headset to dry rather than powering it on immediately.
Areas that need different cleaning methods
| Area | Method | Do not do this |
|---|---|---|
| Front and back of ear cushion | Small circular motions with a clean, wrung-out cloth and diluted dish soap | Do not soak, drip liquid onto it or apply rubbing alcohol |
| Padded headband | Use the same lightly damp soapy cloth | Do not saturate the padding or leave it compressed while wet |
| Inner screen | Dry cloth only | Do not use water, alcohol, a wet wipe or a brush pushed through the screen |
| Plastic shell | Small amount of rubbing alcohol on a paper towel | Do not let alcohol run into seams, controls or the cushion |
| Charging port and buttons | Soft-bristled brush; tweezers only for loose surface lint | Do not push tools inside the headphone |
Signs that cleaning is enough—and signs the pads should be replaced
Cleaning addresses surface sweat, oil, dust and ordinary buildup. It cannot restore foam that has permanently collapsed or a covering that has split. Inspect the cushions after they are dry and before every reinstallation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteKeep using the cushions when
- The covering is intact without an open tear or separated seam.
- The foam still springs back rather than remaining flattened.
- The cushion sits evenly around the ear and does not expose a gap.
- Any odor or discoloration improves after cleaning and complete drying.
- The headset still feels comfortable and maintains its normal acoustic seal.
Plan a replacement when
- The cushion is torn, cracked, peeling or physically damaged.
- The foam remains flattened, making the earcup uncomfortable or changing its position.
- A persistent odor remains after careful cleaning and drying.
- The earcup no longer seals consistently around the ear.
- Noise cancellation or isolation is affected because the cushion no longer stays against the head.
Bose says properly cared-for cushions should last several years, but frequent use eventually wears them down. That is a general expectation, not a guaranteed service life. Bose describes the cushions as a critical acoustic seal, so replacement is about performance and comfort as well as appearance. The manufacturer’s wording is: “With proper care, the ear cushions on your headphones should last for several years, but they will eventually wear down over time if used frequently.”

Choose a replacement for the exact QuietComfort model
QuietComfort cushions are not a universal part across every generation. Bose’s accessory catalog lists separate options for QuietComfort, QuietComfort 45, QuietComfort 35, QuietComfort Ultra and other models. Check the model name printed on the headset, its documentation or the device information in the Bose app before ordering. Start with the Bose headphone accessories and ear cushions catalog, then confirm that the product page names your exact generation.
| Decision point | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Headphone generation | The listing explicitly names your QuietComfort model | Different earcup shapes and mounting systems may not interchange |
| Scrims included | Whether the package contains the thin inner scrims as well as cushions | Damaged or missing scrims can leave the inner screen unprotected |
| Color or finish | The finish that matches your headset, if appearance matters | Model compatibility and color are separate checks |
| Construction | Original Bose or a third-party part, stated clearly by the seller | Material, fit and included pieces can differ; this guidance does not establish comparative durability |
| Price and availability | The current product page, seller and warranty terms | Displayed prices and stock can change |
Bose’s current QuietComfort Headphones Ear Cushion Kit listing describes a kit for lost or damaged cushions and lists two cushions and two scrims in the box. The displayed price and availability are changeable, so verify them on the product page when you buy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to install new cushions and scrims
Replace the scrims before fitting the cushions. The scrims are the thin pieces that sit over the earcup’s inner screen. Bose cautions against pressing the center of the earcup during this work because pressure there could damage the electronics.
- Remove the old cushion and old scrim from the earcup. Clear away loose material without scraping or pushing anything into the screen.
- Identify the right earcup. Bose’s installation directions use the power switch on the back as the reference for the right side.
- Place the scrim marked R in the right earcup, then position the left scrim in the left earcup.
- Keep your fingers on the scrim’s perimeter and avoid pressing the center of the earcup.
- Align the replacement cushion with the earcup so its mounting flange sits above the retaining tabs.
- Starting at one point, press the flange beneath the tabs around the edge. Do not force one section so hard that the cushion twists.
- Continue around the entire earcup until all ten retaining tabs are engaged.
- Press around the full edge for 30 seconds so the cushion seats evenly.
- Repeat the alignment and edge-pressing process on the other side.
- Run a finger around each perimeter to check for a raised section, loose flange or gap before wearing the headphones.
Bose says all ten tabs on each earcup must lock for optimal performance, particularly for noise-cancelling headphones, and that you will hear when the cushion fully snaps into place. A cushion that looks attached but has one unlocked tab can leak air and alter the seal.

Troubleshoot a cushion that feels wrong after cleaning or replacement
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| One side feels loose | A mounting flange is not beneath every retaining tab | Remove the cushion and reseat it around the complete edge; confirm all ten tabs lock |
| Noise cancellation seems weaker | An uneven acoustic seal, flattened pad or misaligned scrim | Check the cushion perimeter, scrim position and pad condition; replace a worn cushion |
| The cushion feels damp | Too much cleaning water or insufficient drying time | Remove it and air-dry fully before reinstalling or using the headset |
| Odor returns quickly | Sweat has reached the foam or the material is permanently affected | Repeat the gentle clean and dry; replace the cushion if the odor persists |
| Buttons or port have debris | Residue lodged in an exterior recess | Use a soft brush outward; never push tweezers or another tool inside |
| Screen appears dusty | Surface dust, not necessarily a failed part | Use a dry cloth only and avoid wet cleaning near the screen |
If a problem begins after liquid reaches the inner screen or an opening, do not add more cleaner to solve it. Remove the cushions if necessary, leave the headset unpowered while it dries, and seek manufacturer support if normal operation does not return. The cleaning guidance does not provide a repair procedure for liquid damage.
A practical maintenance routine
After sweaty or outdoor use
- Wipe visible moisture from the cushion surface with a clean, dry cloth.
- Let the headset rest in a dry place instead of sealing it immediately in a case while damp.
- Brush obvious lint from the exterior without touching the inner screen with a wet tool.
Weekly
- Remove the cushions and clean both sides with the lightly damp soapy cloth.
- Wipe the padded headband using the same method.
- Clean the inner screen with a dry cloth and brush residue around ports and buttons.
- Allow every padded part to air-dry completely before reassembly.
At each inspection
- Look for tears, peeling, flattened foam, loose stitching and uneven edges.
- Check whether the earcup still seals comfortably without excessive pressure.
- Confirm that a replacement cushion’s flange remains under every retaining tab.
Cleaning weekly is Bose’s general recommendation, particularly after workouts; it is not a promise that every user will need exactly seven-day intervals. Adjust the routine to sweat, climate and use while keeping the same moisture precautions.
When a third-party cushion is the only available option
A non-Bose cushion may be available when an original part is out of stock, but compatibility should be treated as a fit question rather than assumed from a similar product name. Verify the exact QuietComfort generation, mounting flange shape, scrim arrangement and included pieces. The available evidence does not establish comparative durability, acoustic performance or value for third-party kits, so those claims should not be inferred from photographs or a seller’s generic “fits QuietComfort” wording.
For any listing, read the current seller information, return policy, warranty and package contents. If the kit does not include scrims, determine whether your existing scrims are intact and reusable before ordering. Never force a cushion that does not align naturally with the retaining tabs; forcing it can leave an uneven seal or damage the earcup.
Cleaning and replacement checklist
- Identify the exact QuietComfort generation.
- Remove each cushion by gently pulling the top away from the earcup.
- Prepare diluted dish soap and warm water, then wring a clean cloth until only damp.
- Clean the front and back of each cushion in small circular motions.
- Clean the padded headband with the same cloth.
- Keep the inner screen dry and use a dry cloth for dust.
- Use rubbing alcohol only on the plastic exterior, applied to a paper towel.
- Brush around ports and buttons; use tweezers only for accessible surface lint.
- Air-dry every padded part completely.
- Replace cushions when damage, flattening, persistent odor or loss of seal remains.
- For installation, fit the right and left scrims first, avoid the earcup center, lock all ten tabs and press around each edge for 30 seconds.
Final decision: clean or replace?
Clean the cushions when the problem is surface sweat, oil, dust or a temporary odor. Replace them when the foam or covering is damaged, the odor persists, comfort has deteriorated or the acoustic seal is no longer reliable. In either case, moisture control is the central rule: use a wrung-out cloth on removable padding, keep the inner screen and openings dry, and do not reinstall anything until it is completely air-dried.
