Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The safest way to clean a portable Bluetooth speaker is to switch it off, disconnect power, wipe it with a clean soft cloth, and follow the exact model manual before using water, removing a grille, or applying any cleaner. Water resistance is not universal: ratings, rinse permissions, port covers, drying procedures, and battery-storage rules differ by model. Never charge the speaker until both the speaker and charging port are completely dry.
Start with the exact model’s instructions
Portable speakers use different grille fabrics, plastics, coatings, seals, buttons, and charging-port designs. A procedure that is safe for one model can damage another. Find the support page or printed manual for your exact model before you rinse it, remove a grille, brush debris into an opening, or use any liquid.

- Check whether the grille is fixed or removable. A fixed grille should not be pried off. Sony’s LF-S50G instructions allow the grille on that model to be removed and rinsed separately, but the speaker’s IPX3 protection does not apply while the grille is off. That permission is specific to the LF-S50G, not a general rule for portable speakers. Sony’s LF-S50G cleaning instructions also prohibit soap, hot water, and scrubbing.
- Read the stated water rating and its limits. An IP code describes particular dust or water tests; it does not mean the speaker is safe in every liquid or situation.
- Look for charging and drying directions. Some manuals specify room-temperature drying, a particular port position, or a waiting period. Follow those instructions instead of estimating when the speaker feels dry.
If the manual is unavailable, limit yourself to a dry, soft-cloth wipe. Do not assume that a speaker advertised as waterproof can be rinsed or submerged.

- Turn the speaker off.
- Disconnect the USB or other charging cable and remove any accessory connected to it.
- Move to a clean, dry, shaded work area. Avoid cleaning over sand, loose grit, or a sink where the speaker could fall into water.
- Inspect the grille, seams, buttons, rubber port cover, and charging connector for sand, lint, or visible damage.
- Keep the model manual open so you can confirm whether rinsing, grille removal, or a particular drying position is allowed.
Do not start by spraying the speaker. Liquid can run through a grille or seam before you know whether the seals and materials are designed for it.

A safe routine for dust, fingerprints, and ordinary dirt
1. Wipe the exterior gently
Use a clean, soft, dry cloth on the housing, controls, and accessible grille surface. A microfiber cloth is a practical option, but it is not a required or specially endorsed product. Bose’s care guidance for SoundLink Plus says to wipe larger exterior surfaces with a soft cloth, avoid cleaning detergents, and let the speaker dry before operating it. See the SoundLink Plus care instructions.
Use light strokes rather than pressure. Pressing hard can push grit into fabric, deform a grille, or force debris through an opening. Refold the cloth to expose a clean section as dirt lifts from the surface.
2. Work around openings without pushing debris inside
Keep the cloth from snagging on grille holes, microphone openings, passive radiators, and button gaps. If lint is caught at an edge, lift it away with the corner of the cloth rather than scraping across the grille. Do not insert pins, toothpicks, cotton swabs, or stiff brushes into acoustic or charging openings unless the model manual specifically provides that method.
3. Treat marks according to the manual
Manufacturers do not establish one cleaner that is safe for every speaker finish. Bose explicitly says to avoid cleaning detergents for SoundLink Plus, while Sony’s LF-S50G instructions prohibit soapy water and hot water for that model’s grille. Without model-specific permission, do not use household spray, disinfectant, solvent, alcohol, abrasive paste, melamine foam, oil, or a waterproofing spray.

When water is involved, separate the rating from real-world use
IP ratings are test classifications, not a promise that a speaker can be used underwater or exposed indefinitely to any liquid. Bose explains that IP67 combines dust protection with temporary immersion under specified test conditions and says compatible speakers should not be intentionally operated underwater. The product page for the SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) gives that model’s own rating and depth/time limits; consult its water guidance rather than applying it to another speaker.
| Model or guidance | Published rating or limit | What the statement means |
|---|---|---|
| JBL models covered by the support article | IPX7; immersion in 1 metre (3.3 feet) of water for up to 30 minutes | This is the stated test context. The guidance does not make saltwater, chlorinated water, deeper water, or every real-world impact safe. See JBL’s water and chemical guidance. |
| Bose SoundLink Flex Portable Speaker (2nd Gen) | Bose lists IP67 and IP64 and describes immersion up to 1 metre for up to 30 minutes for the applicable water protection | Keep these limits attached to the SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen); do not use them as a specification for another Bose or non-Bose model. See Bose’s product support page. |
| Sony LF-S50G | IPX3 while the grille is fitted | Sony’s instructions allow that model’s grille to be removed and rinsed separately, but protection does not apply while the grille is off. The instructions prohibit soap, hot water, and scrubbing. See Sony’s LF-S50G article. |
The rating also assumes the speaker is intact and used as designed. A torn grille, cracked housing, loose seam, missing port cover, or prior impact can compromise protection even when the printed IP code has not changed.
Cleaning after saltwater or pool exposure
Salt and pool chemicals deserve separate treatment. JBL states that “The standard for waterproofing is for tap water.” Its listed models should be rinsed with fresh water after ocean or pool use, then have covers and places where water collects dried. JBL warns that salt and pool chemicals can harm seals or the finish over time if residue is left behind. Read the complete JBL support guidance and confirm that your own model is covered before rinsing.

If rinsing is authorized
- Turn the speaker off and disconnect the cable.
- Confirm that every port cover is closed as the manual directs.
- Use clean, fresh tap water only; do not add soap or detergent.
- Rinse for the duration and in the orientation specified by the model instructions. Do not deliberately operate or play the speaker underwater.
- Drain and wipe the body, covers, seams, and recesses where water gathers.
- Dry the speaker exactly as directed, and wait until the charging area is fully dry before reconnecting power.
If rinsing is not authorized, wipe away residue with a barely damp cloth only when the manual permits that method; otherwise use a dry cloth and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider for advice. Do not improvise by dunking a speaker to remove salt.
Drying and charging after water exposure
Charging is the highest-risk mistake after a rinse or spill. Sony warns: “Even if your speakers are waterproof or moisture-proof, charging the speakers while wet may malfunction or damage the speaker and charging device.” Its support article was last modified January 20, 2026; the warning is available in Sony’s charging precautions.
Wipe visible water with a soft, dry cloth and let the speaker and charging area dry fully at room temperature when the model instructions call for that method. Bose says SoundLink Plus ports must be thoroughly dry before charging. JBL’s Go 4 safety notice says not to charge after a spill or rinse until the speaker is completely dry and clean. Read the JBL Go 4 notice for that model.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Do not connect a cable simply because the outside feels dry; inspect the port and surrounding recess.
- Do not use a hair dryer, heat gun, radiator, oven, or direct high heat to accelerate drying. Heat can damage batteries, adhesives, seals, and finishes.
- Do not seal a damp speaker in a bag or container, and do not poke absorbent material into the charging socket.
- After charging, close the port cover correctly if the design includes one. A cover that is folded, dirty, or not fully seated can defeat the intended water protection.
Port covers, grilles, and debris: model-specific handling
Fixed grilles
Leave a fixed grille in place. Wipe its surface gently and let the manual determine whether any liquid or brush is permitted. A grille can be structural, acoustic, or part of the water barrier; removing it may void the protection or damage the driver.

Removable grilles
Only remove a grille when the manufacturer documents the procedure for your exact model. Sony’s LF-S50G article is an example of an allowed, model-specific process and says, “Do not use soapy water or hot water for cleaning to avoid damage to the speaker grill.” That wording applies to the LF-S50G grille, not to fabric or metal grilles generally.
Charging and accessory ports
Keep lint and grit from entering a port. Do not scrape contacts with metal or flood the connector with cleaner. If a cover will not close, inspect its hinge and sealing edge for debris and consult the manual rather than forcing it.

Storage intervals are product-specific. Bose’s Portable Smart Speaker guidance says to avoid leaving that speaker unused for more than six months and recommends a full discharge and recharge each month to improve the accuracy of its remaining-charge reading. Those instructions are for that product line, not a universal requirement. See Bose’s battery-care guidance.

- Store the speaker clean and fully dry.
- Follow the manual’s charge level and interval instructions instead of applying another model’s schedule.
- Keep it away from prolonged direct sunlight and extreme temperatures when the manual warns against them.
- Do not store it with a wet port cover closed over trapped moisture.
No owner-dated study or named statistic establishes how much cleaning extends a portable speaker’s service life. Cleaning is still useful for removing residue and protecting surfaces, but a precise lifespan gain cannot be promised.
What to do if the speaker is not working after water exposure
The speaker will not turn on
Disconnect it from power and do not keep pressing buttons or attempting repeated charges. Check the model’s water-damage instructions, allow the documented drying process to finish, and contact the manufacturer or authorized service if it remains unresponsive.
It turns on but sounds muffled
Water or residue may remain near the grille or passive radiator. Keep the speaker powered off if the manual requires that, drain and dry it as directed, and do not push an object through the grille. If the sound does not return after complete drying, arrange service rather than increasing volume to test it.
The charging cable will not connect or charging stops
Inspect the port for moisture, lint, corrosion, or a displaced cover. Do not force the plug or scrape the contacts. Leave the speaker disconnected until the port is completely dry; persistent corrosion or a damaged seal requires manufacturer support.
The speaker was dropped, cracked, or has a loose seal
Stop treating its IP rating as reliable. Physical damage can compromise protection, so avoid further water exposure and ask the manufacturer or an authorized repair center for an inspection.
Cleaning mistakes to avoid
- Do not assume “waterproof” means safe in seawater, chlorinated water, deeper water, or continuous underwater use.
- Do not rinse a model until its manual explicitly permits rinsing.
- Do not remove a grille that the manual describes as fixed or does not mention.
- Do not use detergents, soap, hot water, solvents, disinfectant, abrasive pads, or generic waterproofing sprays without model-specific approval.
- Do not charge while the speaker, port, cable, or connector is wet.
- Do not use high heat to dry the speaker.
- Do not claim a battery-storage interval from another model’s guide; six months, monthly cycling, and three months above are product-specific instructions.
A quick decision guide
| Situation | Safest next action |
|---|---|
| Dust or fingerprints only | Power off, unplug, and wipe gently with a clean soft cloth. |
| Saltwater or pool-water exposure | Check the exact manual. If it authorizes rinsing, use fresh water and follow its drying procedure; otherwise do not improvise. |
| Unknown water rating or damaged housing | Keep water away, use a dry wipe, and seek model-specific support. |
| Wet charging port | Do not connect power. Dry completely at room temperature as directed by the manual. |
| Speaker remains faulty after complete drying | Stop testing and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider. |
The durable rule is simple: clean the exterior gently, treat water resistance as a narrow model specification, remove salt or chlorine only when the manufacturer allows it, and keep charging equipment away from moisture until everything is fully dry.
