The safest method is simple: switch off the air fryer, let the removable parts cool completely, then wash the basket and crisper plate with warm or hot water, mild dishwashing liquid and a soft, non-scratch sponge. Soak stuck food instead of scraping it, rinse away all detergent and dry every part before reassembly. Keep metal utensils, steel wool, metal scouring pads and other abrasive cleaners away from coated surfaces.
Dishwasher use is not universal. Check the manual or product page for your exact model before putting any basket, pan or insert in a dishwasher. Even when a manufacturer permits it, handwashing is the gentler choice for long-term coating care.

Why gentle cleaning matters
Most air-fryer baskets have a coated cooking surface designed to release food more easily. Philips says its air-fryer parts are mostly coated with nonstick PTFE, while also noting that materials can vary by model. COSORI likewise says coating materials differ between models. That means a cleaning instruction for one basket is not automatically a specification for another.
Coatings are most vulnerable to hard, sharp or abrasive contact. A metal spatula, knife, fork, steel-wool pad or metal scouring pad can scratch the surface. Abrasive powders and rough scrubbers can also wear it. Scratches may make food more likely to stick and can complicate later cleaning, so preventing damage is better than trying to restore a worn surface.

Heat and temperature changes matter during cleaning as well. COSORI’s cleaning guide warns against sudden temperature changes. Do not run very hot water over a basket that is still extremely hot, and do not plunge a hot part into cold water. Let the appliance and removable parts cool first, then clean them with warm or hot water.

COSORI says its cleaning guide needs no special products and lists ordinary household supplies. A soft-bristle brush is useful around grooves and crevices, but it should still be gentle. If you are uncertain whether a cleaner is safe, leave it out and use mild dish soap unless your model’s manual expressly says otherwise.
Step-by-step: the coating-safe cleaning method

Switch off and cool the appliance
Turn the air fryer off, unplug it if your manual recommends doing so, and wait until the appliance and removable parts are cool enough to handle. Philips says to allow approximately 30 minutes for its air fryer to cool before cleaning; COSORI also instructs owners to cool the appliance first. Your model’s manual takes priority if it specifies a different interval.

Remove the basket and crisper plate
Take out the removable basket, pan and any crisper plate or insert. Separate parts according to the model’s instructions. Do not immerse the electrical housing, heating assembly, display or controls. If grease has collected in the drawer, remove the loose residue with the soft sponge rather than dragging a hard tool across the coating.

Wash with warm water, mild soap and a soft sponge
Fill a sink or basin with warm or hot water and add a small amount of mild dishwashing liquid. Wash the coated surfaces with a soft sponge, using light pressure. Philips recommends hot water, washing-up liquid and a soft sponge; COSORI recommends warm soapy water and a soft sponge. Work around the base, sidewalls, holes and edges where oil often remains.

Soak residue instead of scraping it
If food remains stuck, cover the affected area with hot water and detergent and let it soften. Philips specifies a five-to-ten-minute soak for residue stuck to the bottom of its pan. After soaking, wipe with the soft sponge. Repeat the soak if needed rather than increasing pressure or reaching for a metal implement.

Reach grooves with a soft brush
A soft-bristle brush can loosen residue in perforations, corners and other narrow areas, according to COSORI’s cleaning guidance. Brush gently and let soaking do most of the work. A brush is not a license to scrub aggressively; stiff or abrasive bristles can still mark a coating.

Use a model-specific treatment only when instructed
COSORI’s FAQ describes a bicarbonate-of-soda paste for stubborn grease and a 15-minute dwell before rinsing. Treat that as COSORI guidance, not a universal instruction for every basket. If your own manual does not mention bicarbonate of soda or another cleaner, stay with warm soapy water and soaking.

Rinse thoroughly
Rinse each washed part until no visible soap remains. Detergent left in perforations or seams can affect the next cooking cycle and attract residue. Inspect the underside and the rim, not just the cooking surface.

Dry completely before reassembly
Dry the basket, pan and insert with a clean towel or leave them to air-dry fully. Philips guidance says to rinse and dry the parts before use, and COSORI also includes drying in its cleaning process. Reassemble only when the parts are dry and the appliance housing is free of moisture.

How to handle especially stubborn grease
Start with time, not force
Stuck oil and cooked-on food often release after a short soak. Use the Philips five-to-ten-minute interval when cleaning a Philips pan, or follow the interval in your own manual. Drain the water, wipe gently and repeat if necessary. Several short soaks are safer than one aggressive scraping session.
Use a soft brush for perforations
Basket holes can trap crumbs and browned food. After soaking, move a soft-bristle brush across the holes from the non-coated side where possible, then rinse. Do not push a sharp object through blocked holes; that can scratch the coating or deform the basket.
Reserve bicarbonate paste for the maker that specifies it
COSORI’s FAQ offers bicarbonate-of-soda paste for stubborn grease, with a 15-minute dwell before rinsing. Because coating materials vary by model, do not assume the same treatment is approved for another manufacturer or series. Follow the exact product manual whenever it gives a different cleaner, concentration or contact time.
Can the basket go in the dishwasher?
Only the exact model’s instructions can answer this reliably. Dishwasher ratings vary by manufacturer and model, and some products have separate instructions for the basket, pan, crisper plate and other inserts.

Do not infer dishwasher safety from a basket’s appearance or from another model in the same product family. The safest fallback when documentation is unclear is handwashing.

Handwashing versus dishwasher: the practical choice

If you choose the dishwasher for an approved part, remove food first, place the part as directed by the manufacturer and let it dry before use. Never put the electrical housing in the dishwasher.

Clean soon after cooking
Allow the basket to cool, then wash it while grease and crumbs are still relatively fresh. Prompt cleaning reduces the need for prolonged soaking or forceful scrubbing. Do not begin while the part is dangerously hot; cooling remains the first step.
Use separate tools for coated cookware
Keep a soft, non-scratch sponge and soft brush for the air fryer. A sponge that has collected grit from a sink or a cast-iron pan can act like an abrasive on a coated basket. Replace it when it becomes rough or contaminated with hard particles.
Lift food with silicone or wood during cooking
When a recipe requires turning or removing food, avoid metal utensils that can contact the coating. Use a non-sharp utensil approved by your model’s instructions. Cleaning cannot undo a scratch made during cooking.
Dry before storing
Water trapped around a crisper plate, rim or perforation can leave residue and create an unpleasant smell. Dry every part before placing it back in the appliance or a cupboard. Store inserts so that they do not rub against sharp metal objects.

What not to do
- Do not scrape with a knife, fork or metal spatula. Philips explicitly warns that metal kitchen utensils can damage the nonstick coating.
- Do not use steel wool or a metal scouring pad. COSORI separately warns against metal scouring pads, and Philips warns against abrasive cleaning materials.
- Do not pour cold water onto a very hot basket. COSORI’s guide warns against sudden temperature changes.
- Do not assume a dishwasher is safe because another air fryer allows it. Confirm the exact model and part.
- Do not use an unapproved chemical degreaser simply because grease is stubborn. A stronger product can create a coating or residue problem; use the manual’s specified method.
- Do not reassemble while damp. Rinse and dry first, including the underside and crevices.
Troubleshooting common cleaning problems
Food is still stuck after one soak
Drain the water, wipe with the soft sponge and repeat the soak. For a Philips pan, the stated soak is five to ten minutes. For a COSORI basket, the maker’s bicarbonate-paste option has a 15-minute dwell. If the residue remains, consult the model manual rather than escalating to a metal tool or abrasive pad.
There is grease in the holes or corners
Soak first, then use a soft-bristle brush with soapy water. Rinse from several angles so loosened particles leave the perforations. Inspect the rim and underside before drying.
The basket has a new smell after washing
Rinse again to remove detergent, then dry completely. Check that soap has not collected in holes, seams or under an insert. If the odor persists, stop using unapproved cleaners and consult the model’s care instructions.

Cleaning cannot repair damaged coating. Stop using metal or abrasive tools, document the condition and check the manufacturer’s safety and replacement guidance for your model. Do not assume that a coating used by one manufacturer has the same construction or care limits as another; Philips identifies mostly PTFE-coated parts in its products, while COSORI says materials vary by model.

Philips
Philips’ “How to clean my Philips Airfryer,” published June 3, 2025, recommends cooling the appliance for approximately 30 minutes, washing with hot water, washing-up liquid and a soft sponge, soaking its pan for five to ten minutes when residue is stuck, and rinsing and drying parts before use. It warns: “Do not use metal kitchen utensils or abrasive cleaning materials to clean them, as this may damage the non-stick coating.” The same guidance says the cited basket, pan and insert are dishwasher-safe.
COSORI
COSORI’s current UK FAQ says most of its baskets are dishwasher-safe but asks owners to verify the product page or manual. It recommends handwashing to help prolong coating life, warns against metal scouring pads and describes bicarbonate-of-soda paste with a 15-minute dwell for stubborn grease. Its cleaning guide recommends cooling first, warm soapy water, a soft sponge or brush, thorough rinsing and drying, and avoiding sudden temperature changes.
These instructions support the gentle handwashing method, but they do not establish one universal coating specification or dishwasher rating for every air fryer.
