Unplug the microwave air fryer combo and let it cool completely before cleaning. Wipe the microwave cavity with a soft cloth and mild soapy water, and clean the basket, tray, and other removable parts only as the appliance manual directs. Do not assume vinegar, baking soda, steam, or dishwasher cleaning is safe for your model: manufacturers’ instructions differ.
Before you clean: unplug, cool, and check the manual
Turn the controls off, unplug the appliance, and wait until the unit and its accessories are fully cool. Microwave cavities, glass trays, racks, and air-fry baskets can remain hot; use oven mitts if anything may still be warm. Whirlpool’s microwave air-fry accessory guidance warns that these components may be hot.

Check the manual for which parts can be removed, which cleaners are allowed, and whether each accessory is dishwasher-safe. Do not immerse the appliance body or let liquid reach vents, controls, electrical connections, or other openings.

Wipe the microwave interior
- Remove loose crumbs and food from the cavity. Take out only the parts your manual identifies as removable.
- Dampen a soft cloth or nonabrasive sponge with mild soapy water and wipe away splatters and grease. Whirlpool recommends this approach for microwave interiors in its microwave-cleaning guidance.
- Wipe off soap residue with a clean damp cloth, then dry the cavity. Keep moisture away from vents and controls.
Wash the basket, tray, and rack
Follow the exact cleaning directions for your model’s removable parts. Some accessories may be dishwasher-safe: Whirlpool says its microwave air-fry accessory can be cleaned in a dishwasher, and also describes washing it with mild soap, water, and a washcloth. It cautions against abrasive cleansers and scrubbers. That instruction is for the accessory it covers, not a guarantee that another combo’s basket or tray can go in a dishwasher.

For grease that has baked on, use the mildest method your manual allows and give residue time to soften before wiping. Avoid metal scrapers and abrasive pads, which can damage surfaces or coatings. Dry every part and surface thoroughly before reconnecting or using the appliance.
Choose cleaners and odor treatments by model
Vinegar, baking soda, and steam are not universal fixes. Manufacturer instructions conflict: Whirlpool’s microwave guidance describes a vinegar-or-lemon-water odor treatment; a Midea manual for a particular air fryer permits a baking-soda-and-vinegar mixture on its cooking cavity; Frigidaire says not to use vinegar, baking soda, acids, abrasives, or steam equipment on its air-fryer toaster combo. The Midea instructions are not a general rule for microwave combos.

Use only treatments your own manual permits, on the surfaces it specifies. In particular, do not use oven cleaner, vinegar, baking soda, or a steam treatment unless the manufacturer explicitly allows that use for your model.
Remove lingering food odors
Start with food and grease
Odors often linger when scraps or grease remain. Remove food debris, wash the cavity and removable components as directed above, and dry them fully. Frigidaire notes that oil, grease, and food buildup can cause odors, malfunctions, and reduced performance in its air-fryer toaster combo.

Use a permitted microwave odor treatment
For countertop microwave interiors, Whirlpool suggests heating one cup (250 mL) of water with one tablespoon (15 mL) of lemon juice or vinegar for two to five minutes, then drying the cavity with a microfiber cloth. This is microwave-specific guidance, not an automatic recommendation for every microwave air fryer combo. Use it only if your combo’s manual permits the ingredient and heating method.
GE’s microwave odor guidance suggests cleaning with baking soda or a nonabrasive detergent, then letting the cavity dry. For a strong odor, GE recommends leaving the door open for two to three hours while the microwave is off, to air it out. Check your combo’s manual before applying any cleaner that it does not specifically allow.

When an odor may signal a problem
A new smell during early convection or grill cycles may be normal for some appliances, but Whirlpool’s guidance on this point concerns its microwave context. Check your model’s manual if a smell persists or seems unusual.
Stop using the appliance if you notice a burning smell that is not caused by food—especially an electrical or chemical odor. GE advises discontinuing use in that situation; contact the manufacturer for guidance rather than trying another cleaning treatment.
