Use a clean, soft, dry microfiber or lint-free cloth, keep liquid and particles out of the hinge, and never push a tool into the hinge gap. Remove the case if it blocks access, power the phone off and unplug it, wipe only accessible exterior surfaces, and inspect the inner display before closing the phone. If grit is lodged inside or the hinge feels obstructed, stop instead of forcing or probing it and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider.
What you need before cleaning
Foldable phones have moving hinge assemblies, flexible displays and narrow gaps where grit can become trapped. Cleaning the outside of a case is generally low risk; cleaning around the phone’s hinge requires a much more conservative approach. The safest basic setup is deliberately simple:

- A clean, soft, lint-free or microfiber cloth.
- A clean, dry work surface with good light.
- The phone’s exact model number and its current manufacturer care page.
Do not assume that a kit marketed for ordinary phones, a camera blower, a brush or a cotton swab is suitable for a foldable hinge. The official guidance reviewed does not establish any universal tool or procedure for removing debris from inside a hinge.
Safe cleaning procedure
1. Identify the exact model
Care instructions, protective films and resistance ratings differ between foldable models and generations. Check the model in the phone’s settings, on its packaging or on its original purchase record, then read the current support page for that model. A water-resistance statement for one generation does not grant the same permission to another, and a rating never means that you can wash a hinge.

2. Remove the case only when necessary
If the case covers the hinge, holds dirt against the phone or prevents you from seeing the edges, remove it according to the case maker’s instructions. Do not bend a rigid case sharply or pull an adhesive-backed part away by force. A case is a model-specific accessory, not a hinge-cleaning tool; its construction and hinge coverage must be verified for the exact phone.
Clean the removed case separately. Leather, fabric, rubber, plastic and adhesive components can have different care limits, so do not apply the phone’s cleaning directions automatically to the case. Keep the case away from the phone until both are completely dry.
3. Power down and unplug
Turn the phone off and disconnect its charger, cable and other accessories before wiping it. Google specifically directs Pixel users to turn the device off and unplug it before cleaning; Motorola gives the same safety direction for cleaning or disinfecting. A powered-down phone also removes the temptation to keep opening and closing it while grit is present.

4. Wipe the case and accessible hinge exterior
Use only a clean, soft, dry microfiber or lint-free cloth. Samsung’s foldable-phone guidance says a dusty or dirty hinge should be cleaned gently with a soft, dry cloth. Motorola likewise recommends a dry soft cloth and warns against abrasive cloths. Fold the cloth so you have a clean surface and use light passes over the outside of the case and the hinge surfaces you can see without entering a gap.
Do not scrub, press hard, twist the cloth into the hinge or try to make it reach an interior channel. A dry wipe is intended for loose dust and light surface dirt, not embedded material.

5. Inspect before closing
With the phone open and well lit, look across the inner display, the display edges and the visible hinge area. Google warns users to ensure that no objects or fine particles such as sand or dirt are on the foldable display or in the display hinge when closing the device. Remove only material that lifts away with a gentle dry wipe from an accessible surface.
Never close the phone over a visible grain of grit, a detached piece of case material or another object. Do not force the hinge through a point of resistance. If something remains lodged, leave the phone in the position that avoids pressure and arrange model-specific service.
6. Refit the case carefully
Once the phone and case are visibly free of surface moisture and loose debris, reinstall the case using its intended sequence. Confirm that no edge, adhesive strip or case seam is pressing into the display or hinge. Open and close the phone slowly once, without pushing past its normal movement, and stop if you feel new resistance, scraping or an uneven motion.
What not to put near a foldable hinge
- No picks, needles or blades: They can scratch the display, catch a film edge or push grit farther into the mechanism.
- No cotton swabs or brushes in the gap: Fibers and bristles can detach, and the sources do not establish these as safe interior-cleaning tools.
- No adhesive tape: It can leave residue, pull at protective layers or give false confidence that embedded debris has been removed.
- No compressed air as a universal solution: Google advises against compressed air in its general Pixel cleaning guidance, and the official foldable instructions reviewed do not recommend using it to clean a hinge interior.
- No abrasive cloths or powders: Motorola specifically warns against abrasive cloths, and rough scrubbing can damage surfaces.
- No forced folding: Resistance is a reason to stop, not a sign that more pressure is needed.
Liquids, alcohol and disinfectants
Do not spray cleaner directly on the phone. Keep liquid out of openings, seams and the hinge, and do not let a wet cloth drip into the mechanism. For this specific hinge question, the directly applicable Samsung instruction is a gentle dry-cloth wipe.
Manufacturer instructions differ by surface. Google allows some Pixel cleaning and disinfecting methods, but distinguishes the screen from the back and sides, says to avoid moisture or soap in openings, and warns against sprays, harsh cleaners, rough scrubbing and compressed air. Those permissions are not a blanket authorization to wet a Pixel hinge or another brand’s hinge.

Motorola’s Razr Fold support page permits 70% isopropyl alcohol or Clorox Disinfecting Wipes for gently wiping its screen. That is a screen allowance, not a recommendation to apply alcohol or a disinfectant to the hinge. Motorola still instructs users to avoid moisture in openings and not to spray cleaner directly.
Samsung’s general smartphone-cleaning article says that, when a small amount of liquid is allowed for an appropriate surface, it should be applied to a microfiber cloth rather than directly to the phone, while avoiding openings, compressed-air sprays and general or bleach-based cleaners. That older broad advice does not replace the current foldable-specific hinge instruction: use a soft, dry cloth.
Why dust and grit are a special risk
Samsung says no Galaxy foldable is dust resistant and cautions against allowing liquids or particles into the device. Google says Pixel Fold is not dust resistant and warns that fine particles in the display hinge can damage the hinge mechanism. Motorola says dust exposure can reduce hinge life and damage the display on the Razr Fold.
These statements are warnings about exposure, not a promise that every speck will cause immediate failure. They do mean that a foldable should not be treated like a sealed, conventional slab phone. Keep the device away from sand, loose soil and dusty work areas when practical, and inspect the inner display before every closure when you have been in a gritty environment.

How to clean the case itself
Hard plastic or silicone cases
Separate the case from the phone and wipe it with a soft cloth using the case maker’s stated method. If the instructions permit a slightly damp cloth, wring it until it is barely moist, keep liquid away from seams and adhesive sections, and let the case dry fully before reinstalling it. Do not use the phone’s hinge as a place to test whether the case is dry.
Leather, fabric and textured cases
These materials can absorb liquid, discolor or shed fibers. Follow their specific care directions rather than using alcohol, bleach or a generic disinfectant by default. Avoid saturating stitched areas and do not return a damp case to the phone.
Cases with adhesive strips or moving hinge covers
Adhesive-backed parts can lift when exposed to solvents or repeated wetting. Clean around, rather than through, a hinge cover. If the cover has shifted, peeled or begun rubbing the phone, stop using the case until it has been replaced or the case maker confirms a safe repair.

Loose dust on an accessible exterior surface
Power the phone off, hold it open in a stable position and wipe gently with the dry cloth. Do not close the phone until the visible particles are gone.
Grit visible in the hinge gap or under an edge
Do not insert a tool, swab, brush or tape, and do not blow compressed air into the gap. The reviewed manufacturer sources do not provide a cross-brand extraction method. Keep the phone from being folded over the debris and contact the manufacturer’s support channel or an authorized service provider for model-specific instructions.

Folding feels rough, tight or uneven
Stop opening and closing it to “work” the particle out. A changed feel can indicate debris or mechanical damage, and forcing the hinge can worsen either condition. Note when the change began, leave the phone in a safe open or closed position without pressure, and seek authorized service.
The display, film or case edge is lifting
Do not pick at a pre-installed screen film or press a lifted area back down with a hard object. Google specifically warns Pixel Fold users not to pick at or remove the pre-installed film. Photograph the condition if useful for service, remove the case only if doing so does not pull the affected area, and follow the manufacturer’s repair guidance.
Resistance ratings do not make a hinge washable
Water- or dust-resistance test information describes particular conditions and does not mean that a phone is waterproof or dustproof. Seals and moving parts can also change with normal wear. Samsung lists different resistance ratings across its foldable models; Motorola states that its Razr Fold’s test information is subject to normal wear; Google describes Pixel Fold as not dust resistant. None of these statements supports rinsing a case-mounted phone or directing liquid into the hinge.

- The phone is powered off and unplugged.
- The case is removed if it blocks inspection, and it is being cleaned separately.
- The cloth is clean, soft and dry.
- No tool, tape, brush, cotton swab or compressed air has entered the hinge gap.
- No spray, alcohol, wipe solution or other liquid has been applied to the hinge.
- The inner display and visible hinge area contain no grit or loose objects.
- The hinge opens and closes normally without scraping or resistance.
- The phone and case are dry before the case is refitted.
When professional help is the safer option
Contact the phone maker or an authorized service provider when debris is embedded, the hinge movement changes, the display shows damage, a protective film lifts, liquid has entered an opening, or you cannot clean the area without applying pressure. Tell the technician the exact model, whether the case was installed, what material was present and whether the phone was exposed to liquid or sand. Do not continue testing the hinge while waiting for assistance.
Bottom line
For a foldable phone case and hinge, less is safer: remove the case when needed, power down, use a clean dry microfiber or lint-free cloth on accessible exterior surfaces, keep every liquid and particle out of the mechanism, and inspect the inner display before closing. Alcohol, disinfectant, compressed air and improvised tools may be permitted for a particular model’s other surfaces, but the guidance reviewed does not make them universal hinge-cleaning methods. Embedded debris or changed hinge movement belongs with model-specific support or authorized service.
