Dyson’s Professional filter page applies to dryers with a two-part filter and states that one-part filters use a different process. It also lists a genuine Professional filter accessory; that part is not established as compatible with every Supersonic.
Standard Dyson Supersonic: dry-clean the mesh
These steps apply to the standard one-part Supersonic filter described in Dyson’s filter-cleaning troubleshooting instructions. Keep a soft, dry toothbrush or a soft C-brush nearby. A purchase is not required if you already have a suitable soft brush.
- Power down completely. Turn the dryer off, unplug it and allow it to cool before handling the cage.
- Hold the handle. Grip the handle firmly so the motor housing does not twist while you remove the cage.
- Rotate the cage anticlockwise. Gently turn the filter cage in the counterclockwise direction. Do not force a cage that has not released; recheck that you are holding the handle and turning the cage, not the machine body.
- Pull the cage down and away. Once it has rotated free, remove it from the dryer with a straight, controlled movement.
- Brush the mesh dry. Use the soft, dry toothbrush or C-brush to lift dust and lint from the filter mesh. Dyson’s instruction is dry brushing: do not apply water or chemicals, and do not substitute a wet cloth or household cleaner.
- Replace the cage. Clip the cage back onto the machine and rotate it until it locks. The alignment dot should sit below the closed-circle mark when the cage is correctly secured.
- Check the result before styling. Confirm the cage cannot rotate freely or pull away, then reconnect power and test the dryer. If airflow remains weak or other warning symptoms continue, stop relying on repeated cleaning and move to troubleshooting or Dyson support.
Dyson’s maintenance wording is practical: “Clean your filter regularly to maintain powerful airflow and keep your hair dryer performing at its best.” For this one-part mesh, regular means at least monthly and also whenever the dryer’s three LEDs flash continuously.
Supersonic Nural: keep the filter separate from the washable cage
The Nural has its own support guide and user manual. Its instructions overlap with the standard model—power off, unplug, cool and remove the cage—but the Nural documentation distinguishes the filter from its magnetic cage. That distinction matters if you see advice about washing a filter online.
Remove and dry-clean the filter
- Turn the Nural off, unplug it and wait until it is cool.
- Hold the handle and rotate the filter cage counterclockwise.
- Remove the cage from the dryer.
- Clean the filter with a lint-free cloth or a soft brush. Use light pressure; Dyson cautions against excessive pressure. Keep water away from the filter mesh.
- Align the cage with the dryer and rotate it clockwise until it locks securely.
Wash only the removable cage when the Nural FAQ applies
Dyson’s Nural FAQ says the magnetic filter cage can be removed and washed in warm, soapy water. It says to soak the cage for at least 30 minutes, rinse it and let it dry, while the filter is wiped with a clean, dry cloth. This permission is for the removable Nural cage; it is not a general instruction to wash the standard Supersonic mesh or an unidentified filter.
Keep the cage completely dry before refitting it. If you cannot tell whether the part in your hand is the washable magnetic cage or the filter itself, do not add water—return to the Nural guide or contact Dyson for model confirmation.
For Nural maintenance, Dyson states: “We recommend cleaning once a month, or when the three white LEDs flash continuously.” The white-LED wording is specific to the Nural guidance.

Supersonic Professional: confirm the two-part configuration
Do not apply the standard one-part sequence automatically to a Supersonic Professional. Dyson describes the Professional version as using a two-part filter and explicitly says that one-part filters have a different process. Start with the Professional filter information, identify the two parts and follow the instructions for that configuration.
The Professional page also lists a genuine replacement-filter accessory for the Professional arrangement. Compatibility is model-specific, so identify the dryer and filter configuration before ordering any part. If your dryer has a one-part filter, use its own instructions instead of the Professional procedure.
How often to clean and what the LED alert means
For the standard Supersonic and Nural instructions covered here, cleaning is a monthly maintenance task rather than something to do only after performance falls. The LED alert is an additional trigger: clean when the relevant three LEDs flash continuously. On Nural, Dyson describes these as three white LEDs.
An alert does not change the cleaning material. Standard Supersonic mesh remains a dry-clean part even when the LEDs are flashing. Nural’s washable-cage allowance remains limited to the removable cage described in its FAQ; the filter itself is still wiped with a dry cloth or cleaned with a soft brush.

It is useful to put the monthly check on a calendar because dust and lint can accumulate before airflow noticeably changes. The indicator is not a license to postpone cleaning until the dryer struggles, nor does the absence of a flashing alert prove that every internal part is clear. Always use the model’s own maintenance interval and warning behavior.
What reduced airflow can mean
A blocked filter can restrict the dryer’s airflow, but Dyson’s symptom list is deliberately qualified. Reduced airflow, reduced heat, intermittent power, failure to turn on, and bad or burning smells can have other causes. Cleaning is therefore a first maintenance step, not a promise that every fault will disappear.
- Airflow drops but the dryer otherwise behaves normally: power it down, cool it and clean the correct filter for the model.
- Airflow and heat are both affected: check that the cage is correctly locked after cleaning, then use Dyson’s model-specific troubleshooting if performance does not recover.
- Power cuts in and out or the dryer will not start: do not keep operating it to “test” a suspected blockage. Follow Dyson’s support guidance for the exact model.
- There is a bad or burning smell: unplug the dryer and stop using it while you seek model-specific support. A smell is not proof that brushing the filter will solve the issue.

Common cleaning mistakes and safer corrections
Wetting a standard Supersonic mesh
Water, soap and chemical sprays are not part of the standard one-part mesh procedure. If you have already wetted the mesh, disconnect the dryer from power and do not operate it until you have model-specific advice; the standard instructions do not authorize washing that mesh.

The cage should be rotated gently while the handle is held. Forcing it can damage the locking interface. Stop and verify the rotation direction and model instructions instead of applying tools or extra torque.
Pressing hard on the Nural filter
Nural’s guide allows a lint-free cloth or soft brush but warns against excessive pressure. Light, repeated passes are consistent with that guidance; scraping or compressing the filter is not.
Mixing Professional and standard instructions
The Professional two-part filter is the clearest reason to check the model first. A part that resembles a standard cage does not establish that the standard procedure is correct. Use the Professional documentation when the dryer has that two-part arrangement.
Running the dryer with a loose cage
After any cleaning, confirm the cage is clipped on and locked before reconnecting power. On a standard Supersonic, check that the alignment dot sits below the closed-circle mark; on Nural, rotate the cage clockwise to its locked position.
Assuming a replacement part fits
A genuine Dyson accessory is still not automatically universal. The Professional page identifies a replacement filter for the Professional arrangement, while the support directory separates hair-dryer models. Match the part to the exact dryer and filter configuration before ordering; do not use a visually similar filter as a substitute.
Cleaning only when performance fails
Waiting for a dramatic airflow drop allows debris to build up and can make the alert easy to miss. Monthly care is Dyson’s stated routine for the standard Supersonic and Nural instructions here. Add the continuous three-LED warning as an extra reminder rather than replacing the monthly schedule with it.

When cleaning does not restore airflow
First, disconnect power again and verify that you cleaned the correct component: standard Supersonic mesh, Nural filter versus magnetic cage, or Professional two-part filter. Check that no cage is partially attached and that you followed the permitted dry or washable method for that model.
If the filter is clean, the cage is locked and airflow is still reduced, do not keep escalating the cleaning technique with liquids, compressed force or unapproved tools. Dyson’s instructions identify blockage as only one possible cause. What should I do if the filter cage will not twist off?
