How to claim GST input tax credit on eligible business purchases from marketplaces

You can claim GST input tax credit (ITC) on a marketplace purchase only when you are a GST-registered person, the goods or services are used or intended for business, and the transaction satisfies the CGST Act and rules. The marketplace checkout itself does not create entitlement.

Start with the supplier’s prescribed tax invoice, confirm receipt and business use, reconcile the document with GSTR-2B, apply the business-use, exempt-supply and blocked-credit restrictions, and report only the eligible amount in GSTR-3B. Keep payment and reconciliation records because credit can require reversal if the supplier is not paid within the statutory period.

What makes a marketplace purchase eligible for GST ITC?

Section 16(1) of the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017 gives a registered person credit of input tax charged on supplies of goods or services used or intended to be used in the course or furtherance of business, subject to conditions and restrictions. The rule applies to the underlying supply, not to the website or app through which you ordered it.

In practical terms, a purchase normally has to pass all of these tests:

  • Your GST registration is active for the recipient business.
  • The goods or services are used, or intended to be used, in the course or furtherance of that business.
  • You hold a tax invoice or another document accepted under the rules.
  • The supplier has furnished the invoice details and those details have been communicated to you through the GST system.
  • You have received the goods or services. For goods delivered in lots or instalments, receipt is completed when the final lot or instalment is received.
  • The tax charged on the supply is paid to the government and you furnish the recipient return required by law.
  • No apportionment, blocked-credit rule, credit note, payment issue or other restriction reduces or eliminates the credit.

State GST and integrated GST provisions can affect the treatment depending on the supplier, place of supply and registration involved. Review the tax type and place-of-supply details on every invoice rather than assuming that a marketplace order is an inter-State or intra-State transaction.

The marketplace is not the tax document

A marketplace order page, payment receipt, delivery note or email confirmation is not necessarily the tax invoice needed for ITC. Identify the legal supplier shown on the invoice. In many marketplace transactions, the platform facilitates the order while a separate seller issues the tax invoice. The invoice issuer’s GSTIN and the recipient details determine what you must reconcile.

Ask the seller or platform for the tax invoice if it is missing. Do not substitute a generic commercial receipt. Rule 36 of the CGST Rules recognises specified tax invoices and debit notes, import bills of entry and Input Service Distributor documents as documentary bases for credit, subject to the applicable particulars.

Invoice particulars to check

Invoice field What to verify Why it matters
Supplier identity Legal name, address and GSTIN of the supplier that issued the document Confirms which registered person made the taxable supply and enables matching with supplier-reported data.
Recipient identity Your business name, address and GSTIN where applicable Credit belongs to the registered recipient whose details are reported.
Invoice number and date Unique invoice number and issue date These are key matching fields for your books and GSTR-2B.
Description Goods or services actually ordered and received Supports the business-use test and helps detect substitutions or incorrect invoices.
Value and tax Taxable value, applicable rate and tax amount Determines the amount available for review and posting.
Place of supply Place-of-supply particulars where relevant Helps establish whether the tax charged is consistent with the transaction.

Compare the invoice with the order, delivery evidence and accounting entry. A valid-looking invoice for the wrong entity, wrong GSTIN or wrong goods can still create a compliance problem.

Step-by-step workflow for claiming the credit

1. Confirm registration and business purpose

Before recording ITC, verify that the GST registration belongs to the entity making the purchase. Then document why the purchase supports the business: for example, inventory for taxable sales, a business service, or equipment used in operations. If an item is partly personal or otherwise outside business activity, do not claim the entire tax amount. Apportion or exclude the non-business portion as required by section 17.

Where more than one GST registration is used by the organisation, assign the invoice to the registration that actually received and uses the supply. A marketplace account used by an employee does not by itself establish which registered person is entitled to credit.

2. Obtain and validate the prescribed document

Download the supplier’s tax invoice and retain the original electronic file. Check every field in the invoice table above. Confirm that the supplier GSTIN belongs to the issuer and that your GSTIN is accurate. If the document is a debit note, credit note, import bill of entry or other prescribed document, classify it correctly in your records.

Do not claim from an order confirmation while waiting for the invoice. If the invoice has a typographical error, request a corrected document or other lawful correction from the supplier and preserve the correspondence.

3. Confirm that the supply was received

Match the invoice to delivery evidence, goods-received records, service completion records or another reliable internal record. For a shipment delivered in multiple lots or instalments, section 16 treats receipt as occurring on receipt of the final lot or instalment. Record the date and evidence of final receipt so that the claim is not advanced prematurely.

If the order is cancelled, returned, short-delivered or never completed, place the invoice on hold and resolve the supplier document before claiming. A payment made through the platform is evidence of payment, not proof that the taxable supply was received.

4. Reconcile the invoice with GSTR-2B

GSTR-2B is a system-generated statement based on supplier-filed documents and other specified data. The GST portal FAQ describes B2B invoices, supplier debit and credit notes, specified Input Service Distributor information and IGST import data among the information it can contain.

For each marketplace invoice, compare at least:

  • Supplier GSTIN
  • Invoice or note number
  • Invoice or note date
  • Taxable value
  • Central, State or Integrated GST amount, as applicable
  • Place-of-supply information where relevant

Investigate differences instead of taking the statement total as your claim. Common causes include a supplier filing in a later period, an invoice number or date typo, a credit note that has not been posted in your books, or the supplier using the wrong recipient GSTIN.

5. Apply eligibility restrictions and adjustments

Section 17 requires apportionment where inputs or services are partly for non-business purposes or partly for taxable and exempt supplies. Calculate the business and taxable-use portions under the applicable rules and retain the working paper. Review credit notes, returns, discounts that alter taxable value and any prior reversal connected with the invoice.

Section 17 also contains blocked-credit categories and exceptions. The exact result depends on the current statutory wording and facts, so do not assume that a type of equipment, transport, meal, construction-related cost or communication device is always eligible or always blocked. Check the complete current section 17(5) text and its exceptions before posting a claim.

6. Report the eligible amount in GSTR-3B

The GST portal FAQ maps ordinary inward supplies from registered persons, other than reverse-charge supplies, to Table 4(A)(5) of GSTR-3B. The portal may populate values from GSTR-2B, but those values remain editable. A system-generated summary can be downloaded for reconciliation.

  1. Open the relevant GSTR-3B return for the GST registration that received the supply.
  2. Review the system-populated ITC information against your purchase register and eligibility worksheet.
  3. Remove invoices that fail the business-use, receipt, documentation, supplier-reporting or statutory-restriction tests.
  4. Apply required apportionment and reversals, including credit-note adjustments.
  5. Enter the eligible amount in the appropriate GSTR-3B table and complete any related disclosure required for the transaction type.
  6. Save the working papers supporting the filed figures and resolve unmatched items through supplier follow-up or a later lawful correction.

Do not claim the entire GSTR-2B screen total merely because it is displayed as available. The portal itself describes GSTR-2B as a basis for availing credit according to availability and eligibility, while cautioning that other legal restrictions may not be captured.

7. Monitor payment to the supplier

Rule 37 of the CGST Rules addresses a credit that has been availed when the recipient has not paid the supplier the invoice value plus tax within 180 days from the invoice date. The published rule requires the recipient to add the availed credit to output tax liability and pay applicable interest. After payment is made, the credit can be re-availed in accordance with the rule.

Track the 180-day status in your purchase or accounts-payable register. The rule is a continuing payment condition; it does not mean every invoice must be withheld from the outset when the other eligibility requirements are met. If the invoice remains unpaid as the deadline approaches, flag it for the required reversal and interest calculation.

How to use GSTR-2B without treating it as approval

GSTR-2B is valuable because it brings supplier-reported information into one statement, but it is not a complete legal determination. The portal’s “available” and “not available” presentation covers specified scenarios; the FAQ warns that other circumstances can still make a credit unavailable.

For a disciplined review, maintain one line per invoice with these columns:

Review axis Pass condition Action when it fails
Supplier and invoice validity Prescribed document, correct GSTIN and required particulars Obtain correction or hold the claim.
Business use Supply is used or intended for business Exclude or apportion non-business use.
Taxable use Use relates to taxable supplies where apportionment is required Calculate the permitted portion and reversal.
Receipt Goods or services received; final lot received for instalment deliveries Defer the claim until receipt is established.
GSTR-2B match Supplier-reported data agrees with your records Investigate supplier filing, typo or GSTIN errors.
Blocked-credit review No prohibition applies, or a statutory exception is satisfied Consult the current section 17(5) wording and exclude if blocked.
Payment Supplier payment is tracked within the rule’s 180-day condition Reverse with applicable interest when required; re-avail after payment under the rule.

Business and exempt-use apportionment

A single marketplace order can contain items with different tax treatment or different uses. Separate lines in your accounting records rather than applying one percentage to the whole order without support. For mixed-use supplies, identify the business portion and the non-business portion. For supplies supporting both taxable and exempt activities, apply the statutory apportionment mechanism and preserve the calculation.

Where the marketplace invoice combines several products or services, check each line’s description, rate and intended use. A credit note for a returned line should not be left offset against unrelated purchases. Post the adjustment to the same registration and period treatment used for the original document, subject to the current return rules.

  • The supplier tax invoice, debit note or other prescribed document.
  • The marketplace order or purchase record showing what was ordered.
  • Delivery proof, goods-received note, service completion evidence or final-lot receipt record.
  • Payment evidence and the accounts-payable entry.
  • The GSTR-2B period and matching worksheet.
  • The section 17 business-use, taxable-use and blocked-credit review.
  • Credit-note, return and reversal calculations.
  • The filed GSTR-3B figures and any explanation for manual changes to system-populated values.
  • Supplier correspondence about missing, corrected or late-reported invoices.

Use a consistent invoice reference across the purchase register, document folder and return reconciliation. That makes a later correction traceable without relying on the marketplace account history, which may change when an order is edited or a user leaves the business.

Troubleshooting common marketplace ITC problems

The invoice is missing from GSTR-2B

First verify that the supplier used your exact GSTIN and reported the invoice in the relevant return. Check whether the supplier filed after the statement cut-off or used a different invoice number or date. Keep the invoice and correspondence, but do not treat possession of the PDF alone as proof that every section 16(2) condition has been met. Follow the current law and return instructions for claiming or deferring the amount.

The invoice appears in GSTR-2B but the purchase was personal

Do not claim it. GSTR-2B reflects reported supplier data, not your business-use facts. Remove the amount from the eligible calculation and record the reason in the reconciliation.

The goods were delivered in parts

Match each delivery to the order and invoice. For an instalment supply, wait until the final lot or instalment is received before treating receipt as complete for section 16 purposes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The supplier issued a credit note after the claim

Match the credit note to the original invoice, update the purchase register and make the required reduction or reversal in the return treatment applicable to that document. Keep both documents together so the original claim and adjustment can be followed.

The invoice remains unpaid for more than 180 days

Calculate the availed credit connected with the unpaid invoice, add it to output tax liability with applicable interest as required by Rule 37, and document the reversal. Once the supplier is paid, re-availment is governed by the rule; do not simply restore the credit without linking it to proof of payment.

The marketplace invoice names a different business entity

Credit cannot be moved between entities merely because one company paid the order. Request a corrected invoice where legally appropriate, or treat the purchase under the entity shown on the valid document and its actual receipt and use. Keep inter-company arrangements separate from the invoice-level eligibility analysis.

Timing and the section 16(4) limit

ITC is subject to a statutory time limit under section 16(4), along with exceptions. The exact outer deadline and exceptions can change with amendments and must be checked in the current consolidated CGST Act and the applicable return instructions before filing a late claim. Do not rely on an old calendar date copied from an earlier tax period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set an internal monthly or quarterly cut-off well before the legal deadline. That gives time to obtain missing invoices, ask suppliers to correct reporting, complete GSTR-2B reconciliation and calculate reversals without rushing the return.

A practical invoice-level decision test

Use this sequence for every marketplace tax invoice:

  1. Registered recipient: Is the invoice addressed to the GST registration that received the supply?
  2. Business purpose: Is the supply used or intended for business?
  3. Document: Do you hold a prescribed invoice or other qualifying document with the required particulars?
  4. Receipt: Have the goods or services been received, including the final lot where applicable?
  5. Supplier reporting: Does the supplier-reported information agree with the invoice and appear in the relevant system statement, or is the difference documented and being resolved?
  6. Restrictions: Is any part for non-business or exempt use, or covered by a blocked-credit rule?
  7. Return: Is the amount reported in the correct GSTR-3B category after adjustments?
  8. Payment: Is payment of invoice value plus tax being monitored against the 180-day condition?
  9. Deadline: Is the claim within the current section 16(4) time limit and its exceptions?

A “yes” answer to the first five questions does not override a “no” answer on restrictions, payment or timing. Claim only the amount that survives the complete test.

What the marketplace cannot establish for you

A platform cannot, by displaying a GST amount at checkout, establish that your purchase is for business, that you received the supply, that the invoice carries the correct GSTIN, that a blocked-credit exception applies or that the supplier has paid tax to the government. Those are legal and evidentiary questions for the registered recipient.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likewise, a populated GSTR-2B line is not a substitute for reviewing section 16 and section 17. The reliable process is invoice-level documentation, supplier reconciliation, eligibility review, accurate GSTR-3B reporting and continuing payment monitoring.
