The platform is only the sales channel: the buyer still needs the supplier’s valid tax document, should check the invoice in GSTR-2B, and must self-assess eligibility before reporting credit in GSTR-3B.
Who can claim ITC on an online purchase?
Under section 16 of the CGST Act, ITC is for a registered person on goods or services used or intended to be used in the course or furtherance of business, subject to the Act’s conditions and restrictions. An item bought through Amazon or another marketplace does not qualify simply because GST appears on the receipt. A personal purchase does not become business ITC because it was ordered online.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Eligibility depends on the claimant’s GST registration, the item or service, its business use, the invoice and transaction details, and applicable restrictions. This is a general guide, not a determination for a particular purchase.

How to claim ITC on an e-commerce purchase
- Confirm the buyer and business use. Check that the recipient is GST-registered and that the purchase is used or intended for business. Consider whether any part is personal, relates to exempt supplies, or is otherwise restricted.
- Obtain the supplier’s tax document. Download the supplier-issued tax invoice or other prescribed document. Check the supplier and recipient details, invoice particulars, taxable value and tax charged against the actual transaction. An order confirmation or payment receipt alone may not establish the required tax document. See the CBIC rules on input tax credit and returns.
- Reconcile the invoice in GSTR-2B. Review the relevant period’s GSTR-2B and compare its supplier-reported details with the invoice. GSTR-2B is an auto-drafted, read-only statement intended to help taxpayers take the right credit in GSTR-3B; it is not a complete approval of eligibility. The GST Portal notes that other legal restrictions may not be identified by its availability flags. See the GST Portal GSTR-2B guidance.
- Self-assess before claiming. Apply the business-use test and check the relevant statutory restrictions, including blocked credit, personal use, exempt supplies and place-of-supply issues. A credit indication in GSTR-2B does not replace this review.
- Report eligible credit in GSTR-3B. Enter the eligible amount in the appropriate part of GSTR-3B for the transaction type and tax period, following current GST Portal instructions and the taxpayer’s filing method. GSTR-2B itself is not filed.
- Keep the supporting records and track payment. Retain the invoice, order and receipt details as commercial records, relevant evidence of business use, and reconciliation notes. Monitor payment to the supplier because a time limit can affect credit already claimed.
What the marketplace’s GST obligations mean for the buyer
Marketplace tax collection and reporting are not the same as a buyer’s ITC claim. Under the ordinary section 52 mechanism, an e-commerce operator may collect tax at source (TCS) on qualifying supplies where it collects the consideration. CBIC says the TCS amount is reflected for the actual registered supplier and can be used against that supplier’s tax liability; it is generally a seller-side matter, not extra credit for the purchaser. See the CBIC e-commerce FAQ.

For certain notified services under section 9(5), the operator is treated as liable to pay tax. That changes the operator’s and supplier’s reporting treatment, but it does not by itself establish that the buyer may claim ITC. GST Portal reporting instructions distinguish supplier-reported marketplace sales subject to section 52 from operator-reported section 9(5) supplies; these are outward-supply rules. The buyer should assess its own purchase, document and eligibility conditions. See the GST Portal return reporting guidance.
If the invoice is missing from GSTR-2B
GSTR-2B is generated from details furnished by suppliers, so first compare the statement with the tax invoice and check the relevant tax period. Verify the GSTIN and invoice details, then contact the supplier to correct or file the missing or inaccurate details. Do not treat a marketplace order page or a receipt showing a GST amount as a substitute for the prescribed document and reporting checks.

Even when an invoice appears in GSTR-2B, assess the other legal conditions separately. The statement’s “not available” flags address specified scenarios, not every reason credit could be restricted.
Payment timing and ongoing compliance
CBIC’s rules page describes a reversal where a recipient who claimed ITC does not pay the supplier the value of the supply and tax within 180 days from the invoice date. The stated treatment includes reversal with interest and an add-back consequence when payment is made. Check the current rule and any applicable exceptions for the transaction before acting; the 180-day requirement should not be treated as an unconditional rule without that review.

When to get transaction-specific advice
Ask a qualified GST professional to review the facts if the purchase has mixed personal and business use, involves exempt supplies or a disputed place of supply, falls within a potentially blocked-credit category, or the invoice and supplier reporting do not reconcile. The treatment can turn on details of the claimant, state, item or service, use and transaction that a general guide cannot determine.
