To claim GST input tax credit (ITC) in India, first confirm that the purchase meets the legal conditions, reconcile it with your books and GSTR-2B, and then report the eligible amount in the correct GSTR-3B Table 4 field. An invoice or a GSTR-2B entry alone does not prove that credit is allowable.
Check whether the purchase qualifies for ITC
Section 16 of the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) Act sets out the general entitlement and conditions; section 17 restricts or blocks credit in specified cases. Assess each transaction against the applicable law and rules rather than treating an invoice or portal entry as approval. See the CBIC text of the CGST Act.

- Registration and business use: The general entitlement applies to a registered person for goods or services used or intended to be used in the course or furtherance of business.
- Valid supporting document and supplier reporting: Check that you hold the prescribed invoice, debit note or other tax-paying document. Section 16 also requires the supplier to furnish invoice or debit-note details and those details to be communicated to the recipient.
- Receipt and return: Confirm receipt of the goods or services; for goods delivered in lots, the last-lot rule may apply. The recipient must furnish the return required under section 39.
- Business versus personal use, and taxable versus exempt supplies: Apportion credit where use is mixed. Credit is restricted for the portion attributable to non-business use or exempt supplies; taxable supplies include zero-rated supplies.
- Blocked credit: Section 17(5) identifies categories in which credit is blocked, subject to statutory exceptions. Check the actual provision against the transaction instead of relying on a blanket rule.
- Place of supply and other transaction facts: Review these alongside the document and use tests; a GSTR-2B entry does not resolve every legal eligibility question.
Use GSTR-2B to reconcile, not to decide eligibility
GSTR-2B is a static, read-only, auto-drafted ITC statement based on supplier filings, ISD data and import information. The GST Portal says it is intended to help taxpayers report credit in the relevant GSTR-3B sections; recipients do not file GSTR-2B. The Portal’s Form GSTR-2B FAQ says it “should be used by taxpayers to take the right input tax credit in respective sections of Form GSTR-3B.”
That guidance does not make GSTR-2B a complete eligibility ruling. It flags “not available” for specified scenarios, while other legally ineligible credits may not be flagged. Conversely, a missing entry is a reconciliation issue: check supplier reporting and the applicable statutory conditions rather than ignoring the reporting requirement.

Reconcile each document against your records
- Review or download the relevant period’s GSTR-2B details.
- Compare each invoice, debit note, credit note, amendment, ISD item or import entry with the purchase register and supporting documents. Check identifiers, supplier, tax period and amounts.
- Assess eligibility independently: business use, exempt-supply allocation, blocked-credit rules, place-of-supply treatment, receipt, payment status and the statutory time limit.
- For missing or mismatched supplier documents, investigate and ask the supplier to correct the filing through the appropriate process. Do not claim the same document twice if it appears in a later statement.
- Keep the supporting documents and reconciliation history with the return workpapers so the decision can be traced from source document to GSTR-3B.
Keep a reconciliation log
A spreadsheet or accounting system can organize the review, but it cannot decide legal eligibility for you. For each item, record:
- Document identifier, supplier and document type.
- Tax period and GSTR-2B match status.
- Amount shown, eligible amount and reason for any exclusion or adjustment.
- GSTR-3B table and period in which credit was claimed, reversed or reclaimed.
- Follow-up owner and date for unresolved supplier or document issues.
The GST Portal’s GSTR-2B FAQ and reconciliation advisory advise reconciliation with your own books, avoiding duplicate claims, making required reversals and paying reverse-charge tax where applicable.

Report eligible credit and reversals in GSTR-3B
Use the current GSTR-3B form and instructions for the tax period. The GST Portal’s current guidance maps common credit types to these Table 4 fields:

Portal mappings, auto-population and forms can change. The GST Portal FAQ says auto-populated values are editable, but an edit does not replace a supported eligibility decision. Retain the system-generated summary and workpapers where useful.

Track payment, reversals and reclaim events
Watch the 180-day supplier-payment condition
If you do not pay the supplier the value of the supply plus tax within 180 days from the invoice date, section 16 generally requires an amount equal to the ITC availed to be paid with applicable interest in the prescribed manner. The credit may be taken again after payment. Check prescribed mechanics and exceptions for the specific transaction; do not treat this as an unconditional rule for every case.
Record why a reversal occurred and when it may be reclaimed
Some credits must be reversed, and some may be reclaimed after the relevant condition is met. Record the reversal reason, amount, return period and any event or condition that could permit reclaim. The applicable rules and transaction facts determine whether and when a reclaim is allowed; do not reclaim solely because an item later appears in GSTR-2B.

Meet the ITC claim deadline
As a general rule under section 16(4), ITC on an invoice or debit note cannot be taken after 30 November following the end of the relevant financial year, or after furnishing the relevant annual return, whichever is earlier. The Act contains special situations, including a provision for certain revoked registrations, so the general date is not an exception-free answer. Check the applicable statutory text, rules and facts before relying on a deadline.
