Sony says Monthly Games cost nothing extra while the membership is active, and the selection changes each calendar month.
This guide explains the exact console path, how Monthly Games differ from the Game Catalog, what to do when storage is full, and how to start a download remotely. Menu labels and the monthly lineup can change, so use the current listing shown on your PS4.

What you need before claiming a game
Have the following ready before opening the store area:
- A PS4 signed in to the right PlayStation account. The account must be the one with the active PlayStation Plus subscription. PlayStation describes Plus as a paid subscription and lists Monthly Games as a benefit on Essential, Extra and Premium.
- Available console storage. Claiming a title adds its license to your library, but downloading and installing it still requires enough free space on the PS4 or on compatible USB extended storage.
- The current Monthly Games listing. Sony adds new games every calendar month. The specific titles and their availability windows are not permanent, so check the listing displayed on your console rather than relying on an old game list.
Monthly Games are a subscription benefit, not a separate purchase. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s support description says they are games you can download and play at no extra cost during your PlayStation Plus membership. That wording matters: access is tied to an active membership, and the offer can change from month to month.

How to claim and download a Monthly Game on PS4
Use this path on the console. The labels below are Sony’s published PS4 steps.
- Sign in to the PS4 with the PlayStation account that has the active PlayStation Plus membership.
- From the PS4 function screen, scroll right and select PlayStation Plus.
- Scroll down and select Monthly Games.
- Highlight the game you want to claim.
- Select Add to Library, then select Download.
The download begins through the PS4’s normal installation process. If you want to claim more than one title from the current offer, repeat the same sequence for each game while it is listed as a Monthly Game.
Why “Add to Library” comes before “Download”
The two choices perform different jobs. Add to Library records the Monthly Game on your PlayStation account. Download starts installing it on the PS4 you are using. If you are short on storage or do not want to install the game immediately, claim it first and return to the download later from your library. The important deadline is the game’s current Monthly Games offer, not the moment you happen to have free disk space.

Monthly Games and Game Catalog are different benefits
Both sections appear under PlayStation Plus on PS4, but they do not represent the same entitlement. Sony lists Monthly Games on all three current plans—Essential, Extra and Premium. The Game Catalog is a separate benefit included with Extra and Premium.

If a game is in the Game Catalog rather than the Monthly Games section, selecting it does not make it a Monthly Game. You need the plan that includes the catalog, and catalog availability follows that catalog’s terms. For the monthly subscription benefit, always start from Monthly Games.
How to claim now and install later
You do not have to install every claimed game immediately. Select Add to Library for the Monthly Game while it is available, then postpone the installation if the PS4 is busy or nearly full. When you are ready, locate the title in your PlayStation library and start its download from there.
This approach is useful when several games are offered in one month or when you need to free space first. It does not turn the game into a permanent purchase: Sony’s description ties Monthly Games access to an active PlayStation Plus membership.

Starting a download remotely
Sony’s support guide also states that a remote download can be started through a web browser or the PlayStation App. This is an alternative to selecting Download directly on the PS4.
- Use the same PlayStation account that holds the Plus membership when you access the game remotely.
- Choose the current Monthly Game and add it to your library before requesting the download.
- Select the option to download to your PS4 when it is offered by the browser or app.
Remote downloading is an option, not a guarantee that every attempt will work in every circumstance. If the request does not start, return to the console and follow PlayStation Plus > Monthly Games, then select Add to Library > Download there. The console path is Sony’s direct, documented method for PS4.
What to do when the PS4 says there is not enough storage
A full drive prevents installation even when the game has been successfully claimed. Sony identifies two practical responses: delete applications you no longer need and redownload them later from your Library, or use USB extended storage that meets the PS4 requirements.

Option 1: Delete an application and redownload it later
- Remove an installed application you are willing to reinstall later to make room for the Monthly Game.
- Claim the Monthly Game through PlayStation Plus > Monthly Games if you have not already done so.
- Start the download.
- When you want the deleted application again, find it in your Library and redownload it.
Deleting an installed application is a storage-management step; it is not the same as removing a game from your account. Keep track of which titles you removed so you can find them again in the Library.

Option 2: Add compatible USB extended storage
Sony specifies the following requirements for a PS4 external drive used as extended storage:

These figures are compatibility requirements from Sony Interactive Entertainment’s PlayStation Support material; they are not a recommendation that every PS4 owner buy a drive. Use extended storage only if deleting or moving installed applications does not provide enough room. Check that a drive falls within the 250 GB–8 TB range and uses USB 3.0 or later, while remembering that Sony does not guarantee every model.

The Monthly Games section is missing
Confirm that you are signed in to the account with the Plus membership, then open the function screen and scroll right to PlayStation Plus. Scroll down inside that area and look specifically for Monthly Games. Do not substitute Game Catalog; it is a different section with different plan eligibility.
The game appears, but you cannot claim it
Check the account first. Monthly Games are a Plus benefit, so the account must have an active membership. If you are browsing with a different local user, switch to the subscribed PlayStation account and repeat the console path. Also verify that the title is still in the current Monthly Games listing, because Sony changes the offer each calendar month.

The game is in your library but will not install
Check free space. A successful claim does not create storage. Delete an application and plan to redownload it from the Library, or connect compatible USB extended storage meeting Sony’s 250 GB minimum, 8 TB maximum and USB 3.0-or-later requirements. If a remote request failed, use the PS4’s direct Download command from the Monthly Games page.
You are looking at a catalog title instead of a Monthly Game
Return to PlayStation Plus and choose the correct section. Monthly Games are listed for Essential, Extra and Premium. Game Catalog access is listed for Extra and Premium, and a catalog title requires the plan that includes that benefit.
Keeping the offer and membership terms straight
Three facts prevent most misunderstandings:
- Monthly timing: Sony adds new Monthly Games every calendar month, so the lineup is not fixed.
- Membership condition: the games are available at no extra cost during an active PlayStation Plus membership.
- Benefit scope: Monthly Games and Game Catalog are separate PlayStation Plus features with different plan coverage.
Because menu labels, plan terms and game availability can change, use the titles currently shown on your PS4 as the final authority. The instructions here reflect Sony’s U.S. PlayStation support pages reviewed on October 13, 2026; they do not establish a permanent lineup or future plan terms.
