Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe safest way to find a genuinely free Nintendo Switch 2 game is to start with Nintendo’s Free-to-start games catalog for your country. You can also use free demos, a legitimate promotional download code, or a game entitlement included with a bundle. These are different from paid Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers, which are no longer available for new purchases in Nintendo’s U.S. support information.
Choose the Nintendo Account that should own the game before downloading or entering any code. Account ownership, regional availability, voucher rules, and whether the download starts immediately all affect what happens next.

Start with Nintendo’s official free catalog
Nintendo’s U.S. catalog describes free-to-start titles as games you can download and begin playing for free on Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch systems. Open the catalog, select a game, and read its individual store listing before downloading. A free-to-start label covers the initial download and play access; it does not promise that every character, mode, item, expansion, or later feature has no charge.

Availability is regional. The U.S. page is intended for U.S. accounts and stores, while Nintendo’s U.K. Nintendo eShop overview separately lists free games, apps, and free demos. If your account is registered elsewhere, use that country’s official Nintendo store or eShop listing rather than assuming a U.S. offer will appear for you.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
What to check on a free-to-start listing
- Confirm that the listing is for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, or both systems.
- Look for wording about optional purchases, subscriptions, downloadable content, or in-game spending.
- Check the account’s country or region if the title is missing from search results.
- Read the listing for any age, network, storage, or accessory requirements shown by Nintendo.
Understand the five kinds of “free” offer
People often call several different things a free Switch 2 game. The redemption method and restrictions depend on which type you have.
| Offer type | What you receive | Upfront cost | Account or timing rules |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free-to-start game | A game listing that can be downloaded and started without paying. | No charge for the initial download; optional spending may exist inside the game. | Use the store listing for your region and download it on the Nintendo Account that should own it. |
| Free demo | A limited trial of a paid game, where Nintendo provides one. | No charge for the demo. | The demo is a separate listing and may have different content or limits from the full game. |
| Promotional download code | Digital software or content represented by a code from Nintendo, a publisher, or an eligible promotion. | No charge if the promotion itself supplied the code; a code bought from a seller is not automatically free. | The code is claimed by the selected Nintendo Account and may be restricted by country or an expiration date printed with the offer. |
| Digital game bundle entitlement | A game included with qualifying hardware or another Nintendo bundle. | Included with the qualifying purchase, not a separate free game for everyone. | Some bundles use a download code; others require registering the bundle in eShop before downloading. |
| Nintendo Switch Game Voucher | A paid entitlement that can be exchanged for an eligible game. | Not free. Nintendo’s U.S. FAQ says additional vouchers can no longer be purchased. | Existing unused vouchers have membership, region, account, expiration, and Switch 2 compatibility limits. |
A retailer control number is also not necessarily the game code. When a card or receipt shows both, use the Nintendo Download Code identified for eShop redemption, not the retailer’s internal control number.
Prepare the right account and console
Digital ownership follows the Nintendo Account linked to the user who completes the claim. Before selecting a download button or entering a code, decide which account should own the software. This matters on a shared console: choosing the wrong user can put the entitlement on an account that cannot later transfer it to another account.
Use the account that should keep the game
- Turn on the Switch 2 and select the user profile connected to the intended Nintendo Account.
- Check that the account’s country or region matches the store or promotion you are trying to use.
- If another person supplied the code, confirm that the code is intended for your country and has not already been claimed.
Nintendo’s code instructions state that the software belongs to the Nintendo Account linked to the selected user and cannot later be transferred to another account. A family member can use the same console, but that does not move ownership between accounts.
Check storage before starting
The console must have enough available memory for the game. If the download stops or refuses to begin, check free space in the system’s storage settings and remove or archive content you no longer need. Nintendo’s guidance establishes the need for sufficient memory but does not specify one universal card type or capacity for every Switch 2 title, so do not buy a card based on a generic size claim. Confirm compatibility and the game’s stated space requirement first.

Download a free-to-start game or demo on the console
Once you have selected the correct regional listing and account, the ordinary eShop flow is straightforward. The exact button wording can vary by listing, but the game’s page will identify the no-cost download or demo option.
- Open Nintendo eShop from the HOME Menu.
- Select the user whose Nintendo Account should own the game.
- Search for the title or open Nintendo’s regional free-to-start or demo category.
- Open the game’s store page and read the price, system compatibility, optional-purchase notes, and any region information.
- Choose the listing’s download, free-download, or demo option and confirm the prompts shown by eShop.
- Return to the HOME Menu. The game icon appears while the download is pending or in progress; a progress indicator shows its status.
- Wait for the download to finish, then select the icon to start the game.
If the title is free-to-start but displays optional purchases, those purchases are separate from the initial download. Set parental controls or purchase restrictions on the Nintendo Account if other people use the console.
Redeem a promotional download code on Switch 2
Use this path for a Nintendo Download Code supplied with a promotion, eligible product, or qualifying bundle. Do not confuse it with a paid eShop card or a retailer’s control number.
- Open Nintendo eShop from the HOME Menu.
- Select the user and Nintendo Account that should own the software.
- Choose Enter Code.
- Enter the Nintendo Download Code exactly as supplied. Check similar-looking characters and do not add spaces unless the eShop form does so automatically.
- Confirm the code and follow the on-screen prompts.
- Return to the HOME Menu and look for the game icon. Nintendo says a download status bar appears while the software is being downloaded.
Nintendo’s full console instructions are available at How to Redeem a Download Code on Nintendo eShop. A code claim is permanent for the selected Nintendo Account under the promotion’s terms, so stop and switch users before confirming if the wrong profile is active.
If the code appears to have failed
- Check that you entered the Download Code rather than a retailer Control Number.
- Verify that the code is valid for the account’s country or region and has not expired.
- Look on the HOME Menu for the game icon before trying again.
- Check other users on the console. Nintendo notes that a code may already have been redeemed by a different user.
- Confirm that the console has enough available storage for the software.
Redeem a code online instead
Nintendo also provides an online redemption route at How to Redeem a Nintendo eShop Download Code Online. This is useful when you are away from the console, but it has a prerequisite: the Nintendo Account must have opened Nintendo eShop on a Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch at least once.

- On a phone or computer, open Nintendo’s official online redemption page.
- Sign in with the Nintendo Account that should own the content.
- Enter the Download Code and submit it.
- Confirm the redemption details and complete the prompts.
- Connect the intended console and check the HOME Menu for the title and its download status.
If online redemption is unavailable, open eShop on the Switch 2 or Switch with that account, then retry the web page. Signing into a different Nintendo Account on the website will claim the code for that different account.

Claim a game included with a digital bundle
A Switch 2 bundle can include a code or an account-registered game. Identify which one you have before following a redemption path.
When the bundle includes a Download Code
Use the console or online code steps above. The code is the entitlement; owning the hardware bundle by itself does not put the game on every Nintendo Account on the console.
When the bundle game must be registered in eShop
Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch Digital Game Bundle FAQ describes an account-registration flow:
- Connect the bundled console to the internet and open Nintendo eShop.
- Select the bundle or game shown for registration.
- Choose the Nintendo Account that should own the included game.
- Select Download and follow the prompts.
- Check the HOME Menu for the icon and download progress.
Read the bundle’s packaging and Nintendo’s listing carefully. A code and an account-registration entitlement are not interchangeable, and the account selected during registration determines ownership.

What existing Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers can and cannot do
Do not treat a Game Voucher as a free-game promotion. Nintendo’s U.S. Game Vouchers FAQ currently says it is no longer possible to purchase additional vouchers. Someone who already has an unused voucher may still be able to redeem it, subject to Nintendo’s rules.
- An active, paid Nintendo Switch Online membership is required.
- Each unused voucher expires one year, or 365 days, after the date of purchase.
- A voucher cannot be redeemed for a game exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo states: “Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers cannot be redeemed for games exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2 system.”
- The voucher must be used in the region where it was purchased.
- Only the Nintendo Account that purchased the voucher can redeem it.
For the current eligibility list and program status, consult Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers FAQ. If your voucher is eligible, Nintendo describes two redemption locations: find an eligible game in eShop or on Nintendo’s website, choose the voucher redemption option, confirm with the account password, and select a console if prompted.
Immediate releases and pre-orders
A voucher used for an already released eligible game is processed for download on the selected or primary console. A pre-order voucher redemption is deferred until payment processing and cannot occur earlier than seven days before the game’s release. This timing is different from a promotional Download Code, which normally begins its download after successful code confirmation.
Nintendo’s detailed instructions are at How to Redeem a Nintendo Switch Game Voucher. Check the voucher’s purchase date and eligible-game status before relying on it.

The game does not appear after redemption
First open the HOME Menu and look for the title or its download bar. Then check every user profile on the console. A code can be successfully redeemed by another user, and the entitlement will not move automatically to the account you intended.

The code is rejected
Re-enter the Download Code carefully, verify that it is for the correct country or region, and confirm that the promotion has not reached an expiration date. If the package shows two numbers, use the one labeled Nintendo Download Code. A retailer control number is for the seller’s system, not eShop redemption.
The download will not start
Check available console memory first. Nintendo requires enough space for the game, and a full system can prevent a legitimate claim from downloading. After freeing space, return to the HOME Menu and select the game icon to resume or restart the download if the console presents that option.
The online redemption page will not accept the account
Make sure you are signed in to the account that should own the title and that this account has previously opened Nintendo eShop on a Switch 2 or Switch. Open eShop on the console once, then return to the official web redemption page.
The offer is not listed in your store
Check your country’s Nintendo store rather than changing account regions to chase another country’s promotion. Nintendo can vary game availability, demos, code validity, and voucher eligibility by region. A U.S. listing or a U.K. listing is evidence of availability only for the relevant market, not a guarantee for every account.
A practical decision checklist
Use this sequence to choose the correct path without paying for something that is advertised as free:
- Is the title in Nintendo’s official free-to-start catalog or marked as a free demo? Download it from its regional eShop listing.
- Do you have a promotional Download Code? Select the correct Nintendo Account, open Enter Code, and redeem it on the console or through Nintendo’s online page.
- Did the game come with qualifying hardware or a digital bundle? Determine whether the bundle supplies a code or requires eShop registration.
- Do you have a Nintendo Switch Game Voucher? Treat it as a paid entitlement, not a free promotion, and verify membership, purchase region, account, 365-day expiry, and Switch 2 eligibility.
- Did the download fail? Check the selected account, all HOME Menu users, code type, regional validity, and available storage before trying another claim.
Following those distinctions keeps the game attached to the account that should own it and prevents a paid voucher, a retailer number, or a region-limited offer from being mistaken for a universal free download.
