To claim a free Steam game, sign in to the Steam account you intend to keep using, open the game’s Steam Store page, and use the page’s free-to-play action to add or install it. Then open Library, search for the title, and clear any filters that hide it. The game is registered to the account that added it, not to the computer on which it was downloaded.
Steam defines free-to-play games as free to download and play without a subscription or credit card. Some offer optional purchases, but Steam says you are not required to buy items to play and progress.

What “claiming” a free Steam game means
For an ongoing free-to-play title, claiming is the process of adding the game to a Steam account through its Steam Store listing. Downloading the files is normally part of that process, but installation and account registration are separate ideas:

- Installation: Steam downloads local game files to a computer. You can install later, uninstall, or install on another computer while using the same account.
- Library visibility: The title should be listed when the Steam client is signed in to that account and the Library view is not filtering it out.
A shortcut to a game that was installed outside Steam is different. Steam Support’s “Add Non-Steam Games to a Library” page says that feature “will only add a shortcut to your game in the Steam client.” It does not establish Steam ownership, supply Steam updates, or convert a separately installed game into a Steam entitlement.

Also check whether the offer is genuinely free-to-play. A time-limited trial, promotional weekend, demo, or temporary access event may not create the same continuing entitlement. Do not treat a trial’s installed files as proof that the account owns the full game.
Before you start
Use this short check before selecting any Store button:
- Choose the account first. Sign in to the Steam account you want associated with the game. Family members, work and personal accounts, and accounts created with different email addresses can look similar, but their Libraries are separate.
- Use an official Steam listing. Search from Steam’s Store and open the title’s own page. Confirm the title and publisher so you do not add a similarly named game.
- Check the offer type. Look for an ongoing free-to-play listing rather than a demo, trial, or limited promotion if you want the game to remain available after the event ends.
- Plan for the download. Free does not mean small. Make sure the computer has enough storage and a connection capable of downloading the game’s files and later updates.
- Expect optional purchases only. A free-to-play game can sell cosmetic items, expansions, currency, or other content. Those purchases are separate from adding the base game.
Step-by-step: add the free game to Steam
1. Sign in to the intended Steam account
Open the Steam client or Steam’s web Store and verify the account currently signed in before searching. If several people use the same computer, do not rely on the computer’s previous session; check the account identity shown by Steam and switch accounts first if necessary.
This matters because Steam’s “Information for New Users” guidance describes a Library as the games registered to the signed-in account. Adding the game while another person is signed in puts the entitlement in that other account.
2. Find the title in the Steam Store
Use Steam’s Store search and open the specific game’s product page. Read the page rather than relying only on a search-result thumbnail. Confirm the title, developer or publisher, and the free-to-play description. If the page describes a demo, trial, or a temporary free event, read its end date and access terms before proceeding.
3. Use the page’s free-to-play action
The exact wording can change as Steam updates its client. Depending on the title and the current interface, the action may be presented as a button to play, install, or add the game. Select the free-to-play action on the game’s own Store page, not a third-party download link.
Steam may immediately open an installation dialog. Complete the prompts if you want to download the game now. If you postpone installation, the account can still be checked from Library; the important distinction is that the game must be added through Steam’s listing, not merely launched from a local file.

4. Finish or cancel the installation deliberately
If you continue, choose an available Steam library location and allow the download to complete. A paused or canceled download can leave the game uninstalled even though the account has already started the add process. Avoid deleting the Steam library folder while the client is still registering the title.
If you do not have enough space or bandwidth, cancel or pause the download and return later through Library. Do not use a non-Steam shortcut as a substitute; that creates only a local link and does not provide the Steam entitlement.
5. Open Library and search for the title
Switch to Steam’s Library view. Use its search field and enter the title’s name. If the game is installed, Steam normally offers a launch action; if it is not installed, the Library entry should offer an install action or equivalent. The wording and layout may differ between the desktop client and newer interface versions, but the Library search is the reliable place to verify the account’s game list.
6. Check the entry without assuming installation equals ownership
An entry with local files is not, by itself, conclusive proof of ownership. Steam’s missing-games guidance notes that a preload can exist even when the account does not own the game, or when Family Sharing access is no longer available. Use the Library entry and the Store account state together rather than judging from a folder on disk.

7. Launch and let Steam handle updates
Start the game from its Steam Library entry. Steam can apply a required update before launch. If the title opens successfully, the account, Library visibility, and local installation are all working for that session. In-game purchases, if offered, can be ignored; they are not a prerequisite for the free-to-play base game according to Steam’s free-to-play guidance.
How to find a game that is already on your account
Search by the exact title
In Library, search for the game’s full name and try a distinctive word if the title contains punctuation or a subtitle. Search results can differ from the order in which games were installed, so scrolling through a long list is less reliable than using the search field.
Remove restrictive Library filters
Library views can be narrowed by installed status, collections, categories, or other filters. If a free game is absent, switch to the broadest view available, such as an all-games view, and clear custom filters. A title that is registered but not installed may disappear when an “installed only” filter is active.

Inspect Hidden Games
Steam provides a Hidden Games view under its Library or View navigation. Open that view and search for the title. If you find it, remove the hidden status using the available context-menu or management command, then return to the normal Library list.
Confirm the account before changing anything else
If the title is not in the normal or Hidden Games views, sign out and compare the account with the one used when you added the game. A different Steam account has a different Library, even when both accounts use the same computer, Windows profile, or payment method.
If the game is missing: a practical troubleshooting path
Work from the least disruptive check to the more specific one. Steam’s official “Games Are Missing from my Library” article is written mainly for previously activated or purchased games, so its checks are sensible visibility tests for a free claim, not a guarantee that every free-game problem has the same cause.

Check the Store page as a second confirmation
Return to the game’s Steam Store page while using the same account. The page should show an account-appropriate action rather than treating you as a completely new visitor. If it still presents the original free-to-play action, repeat the add process from that page and then check Library again.
Sign out and back in when the account state looks stale
A fresh sign-in can refresh account and Library data after a transaction or entitlement change. Close Steam’s session normally, sign back in to the intended account, and repeat the broad Library search. This is a visibility refresh, not a way to transfer a game between accounts.

Steam’s new-user information lists downloading a free-to-play game, purchasing a game, and activating a product as separate ways to add games. The following comparison prevents a common mistake: assuming every route creates the same type of Library record.

Free-to-play, trial, demo, and paid content are not interchangeable
Ongoing free-to-play access
Steam Support’s “Free to play games on Steam” page defines these games as “free to download and play.” The base game can therefore be added without buying a subscription or entering a credit card. The individual game may still sell optional items or services.

Optional in-game purchases
Steam also states that players are under no obligation to purchase anything from the Steam Store in order to play and progress through free-to-play games. That statement concerns the general free-to-play model; a particular game can set its own rules for cosmetic items, expansions, boosts, or other extras. Check the game’s own description for what is included in the free base version.
Promotional trials and time-limited access
A trial or promotional event can let an account download and play for a defined period without creating a permanent right to the full title. Keep the event’s dates and terms in mind, and do not infer continuing ownership from the presence of the files after the event ends.
Does claiming a free game remove Steam’s Limited User restrictions?
No. Steam’s current “Limited User Accounts” help page, accessed in October 2026, says an account must spend at least the equivalent of US$5 within the Steam store for the listed community features to become available. The page also identifies free-to-play games and promotional trials as non-qualifying activity for that threshold.
That US$5 figure is a policy threshold, not a fee to claim a free-to-play game. You can add and play an eligible free title without paying it. The restriction affects access to certain community features, and Steam can change the qualifying-spend rules, so consult the current account-help page if a specific feature is unavailable.
Common mistakes and their fixes
Adding the game while the wrong account is signed in
Symptom: One person sees the game, while another account on the same computer does not.
Fix: Return to the account that performed the Store action. If the other person needs access, they must use the sharing or account arrangement supported by Steam; the Library entry cannot simply be copied by moving the files.

Confusing a local shortcut with a Steam claim
Symptom: The game launches from a Steam-created icon but has no Steam Library ownership or Steam update behavior.
Fix: Use the game’s official Steam Store page and free-to-play action. Treat Add Non-Steam Game only as a way to organize an independently installed program.
Leaving a filter enabled
Symptom: The game is found in one Library view but not another.
Fix: Clear installed-only, collection, category, or other narrowing filters and inspect Hidden Games.

Symptom: Files occupy disk space, but Steam does not let the current account play.
Fix: Check the Library entry, account identity, and any Family Sharing relationship. Steam’s documentation specifically warns that a preload or former shared entitlement can leave files present without current ownership.
Expecting a paid purchase to appear instantly
Symptom: A completed purchase is not visible in Library.
Fix: Review purchase history or the receipt, sign out and back in, and confirm that the purchase was made on the account now in use. Those steps come from Steam’s missing-games guidance.
A compact verification checklist
- Steam is signed in to the account you intend to use.
- The Store page is the correct title and describes an ongoing free-to-play offer, not merely a trial or demo.
- You selected the free-to-play action on the official Steam page.
- The download finished, or you deliberately postponed installation for later.
- Library search finds the title with broad filters enabled.
- Hidden Games does not contain the missing entry.
- You are not treating a non-Steam shortcut or leftover preload files as ownership proof.
- If a paid transaction is involved, its receipt or purchase history matches the active account.
The dependable sequence is simple: use the intended Steam account, add the title from its official free-to-play Store page, verify it in an unrestricted Library view, and troubleshoot account and visibility issues before touching local files. That preserves the distinction between a Steam entitlement, an installation, a temporary promotion, and a non-Steam shortcut.
