The important step is to claim the offer during its stated promotion window so the store associates a library entitlement with your account. Installation can wait until you have time, storage and a suitable PC.
Epic Games Store is the clearest documented example: its Free Games page lists rotating promotions. Epic Support says, “To add the game to your library, you must claim it within the indicated period.” The live listing is the authority for the current title, deadline and available claim options; button names and whether a launcher is required can vary.

What you are actually doing
Claiming and downloading are separate actions. Claiming records your right to access the promotion on the account you used. Downloading transfers the game’s installation files to your computer. For a time-limited giveaway, the deadline applies to the first action: claim the offer before it expires. Epic’s support guidance makes library addition conditional on claiming during the indicated period, but it does not say that installation must begin before that deadline.

After a successful claim, you can close the store, free up disk space, or wait until you have a faster connection. When you later install the title from the same account’s library, the store should treat it as owned under the terms of that promotion. Keep in mind that individual offers can have eligibility rules, regional restrictions, separate redemption destinations or other conditions shown on the live page.

What you need before claiming
- An account with the storefront offering the game. Use the account you intend to keep using; a claim made on a different account will not normally appear in your library.
- Internet access sufficient to open the store and submit the claim. You do not need bandwidth to download the game at this stage.
- The current offer page and its displayed end date and time. Do not rely on an old article, screenshot or social-media post for the deadline.
- A way to complete any sign-in, age, regional or account-linking requirement displayed by that specific offer.
No gaming PC, external drive, controller or system-cleanup utility is required merely to add a game to an account. Those items may matter when you eventually play, but they do not perform the claim.
Step-by-step: claim an Epic giveaway and install it later
Epic states that it provides a free game every week, with a new game on Thursday for Mobile and PC. Because titles and deadlines rotate, start from the official page rather than a fixed title list.
- Open the official hub. Visit Epic Games Store Free Games. The page is the live source for the current giveaway and any free-to-play listings.
- Sign in to the intended account. Check the account name or profile indicator before proceeding. If you have more than one Epic account, signing in to the wrong one is the most difficult mistake to notice later.
- Identify the promotion type. Look for wording that indicates a limited-time giveaway, and read the displayed claim period. A title that is simply marked free-to-play is a different category and may not have a weekly claim deadline.
- Read the offer details. Confirm the game title, region, age or eligibility requirements, redemption destination and the exact end date and time. Treat the live listing’s local-time display as controlling if it differs from a third-party article.
- Choose the live claim or add-to-library action. Use the button and flow shown on that listing. Epic’s support article confirms the goal is to claim the offer so it is added to your library; it does not establish one universal browser-only sequence for every promotion.
- Complete the confirmation screens. Continue through any terms, account verification or checkout-style confirmation until the page indicates that the game was claimed, added or owned. A page that merely shows a price or an uncompleted checkout is not proof of a claim.
- Verify the entitlement. Open your library or account’s owned-games view and look for the title. If it is not listed, do not assume the claim worked; check the account, offer period and any error message while the promotion is still active.
- Stop there if you are not ready to play. Once the entitlement is recorded, you can leave the installation for later. Closing the browser or app does not undo a completed claim.
The exact controls can change as Epic updates its storefront. Follow the current page’s instructions instead of treating a button label from an older guide as mandatory.
Claiming is not the same as downloading

A claim is therefore useful when your immediate goal is preserving access, not playing immediately. It does not guarantee that a future computer will meet the game’s requirements, that servers will remain available indefinitely, or that every included add-on has the same terms. Those details belong to the individual offer.

How to read Epic’s weekly free-games page
The page combines several kinds of listings. The weekly giveaway is a limited-time promotion: you must complete the claim in its stated window to receive the library entitlement. Epic describes a new weekly game on Thursday for Mobile and PC, but the title, exact cutoff and any regional presentation can change from week to week.
Use the page as a calendar checkpoint:
- Open it when the new weekly offer is expected, rather than bookmarking an old article that may contain an expired deadline.
- Record the title and the displayed “available until” or equivalent end time in your own calendar if you plan to claim later in the week.
- Return to the same account after claiming and verify that the title appears as owned or in your library.
- Check the page again after the stated cutoff; the previous giveaway may have been replaced even if an old tab still shows its artwork.
Epic’s official support explanation of a missed offer is available at Epic Games Support: missed free offer. It says promotions have limited duration and recommends watching for future free promotions and special offers if you missed one.
Do not confuse a giveaway with a free-to-play game
A limited-time giveaway is a claim-and-keep promotion: the store asks you to secure it during a stated window. A free-to-play listing is a game category whose base download and play access are offered without the same weekly giveaway deadline. Epic displays these categories separately on its free-games page.

Steam’s support page defines its own free-to-play category as titles downloadable for free and playable without a subscription or credit card: Steam Support: Free to play games on Steam. That definition is useful context, but it does not establish Steam’s process for claiming rotating paid games, so do not transfer Epic’s weekly-giveaway steps to every storefront.

Optional route: Prime Gaming offers
Prime Gaming is separate from Epic’s weekly giveaway. Some Prime Gaming promotions can be redeemed through an Epic account, while others may use a different destination or impose their own eligibility and expiration rules. You do not need Prime membership to claim Epic’s weekly store giveaway.
For an offer that specifically directs you to connect Amazon and Epic, Epic’s instructions are:
- Sign in to your Amazon account.
- Open Amazon’s account-linking page and select Epic Games.
- Complete the account connection using the Epic account where you want the content.
- Return to Prime Gaming, read the individual offer’s destination and deadline, and use its claim control.
- Verify where the content was redeemed. It may be an Epic library entitlement, an in-game item or another form of access.
The official linking instructions are at Epic Games Support: connect Amazon Prime and Epic. Check the live Prime Gaming listing for current membership requirements, regional eligibility and redemption instructions; those details are not universal across offers.

A “free” badge alone does not tell you whether you are receiving a permanent library entitlement, a free-to-play download, a temporary trial, an in-game reward or access through another service. Identify the account and redemption destination before confirming.

Verify without downloading
Open the account library and search for the title. Look for an owned, claimed or library status rather than an invitation to purchase it again. If the listing still shows a price, confirm that you are signed in to the same account and that the claim confirmation completed.
Install when ready
When you decide to play, select the title from the library and follow the current installation flow. At that point, check the game’s storage, operating-system, graphics and online requirements. The claim itself does not reserve disk space or pre-download files.
Keep account access secure
Use the account’s normal security controls and avoid sharing credentials. If you linked another service for a specific promotion, review the connection after redemption and retain the account combination needed to access the entitlement later.
If you missed the deadline
A past appearance on a free-games page does not make the old price claimable after the promotion ends. Epic Support recommends monitoring future free promotions and special offers. You can still:
- Check the official free-games page for the next rotation.
- Look for a new promotion, trial or free-to-play version, while treating it as a different offer unless the page says otherwise.
- Watch the title’s official store listing for a later discount or giveaway.
Do not attempt to “claim” an expired offer through an old link or assume that beginning a download after the deadline creates an entitlement. The documented requirement is to claim within the indicated period.
Troubleshooting common claim problems
The game is not in the library
- Check that you used the intended Epic account, not a second account or a family member’s profile.
- Reopen the live offer and confirm that the promotion had not expired before you completed the confirmation.
- Look for a final success or owned message; an abandoned checkout or interrupted sign-in may not count as a claim.
- Read any region, age or eligibility notice attached to the offer.
The page asks for an installation
Follow the live page’s available options and do not assume one browser flow applies to every offer. Epic’s documented requirement is the claim and library addition, not an instruction to start downloading immediately. If the listing does not provide a way to complete the claim in your current interface, use the official support path or the storefront option it presents rather than relying on an outdated button label.
The offer looks free but has a price
First determine whether you are viewing the weekly giveaway, a free-to-play listing, a regional variation or an offer that has ended. Refresh the page, verify the displayed period and check the account. A price after the cutoff can simply mean that the promotion has rotated.
A Prime Gaming reward went to the wrong place
Review which Amazon and destination accounts were linked before redemption. Prime Gaming offers can use different destinations, so the entitlement may not appear in an Epic library even when the claim succeeded. Return to the individual offer’s instructions and the linked-account settings.
A dated example: why live pages matter
PC Gamer reported on October 8, 2026 that Out of Sight and TerraScape were free to keep on Epic from October 8 through October 15, 2026: PC Gamer’s Epic free-games list. That window had already ended on October 16, 2026, so it is not a current offer. The example demonstrates the practical rule: a headline can accurately describe a giveaway when published and still be useless for a later claim. Always open the live Epic page and read its current period.
