To claim a free game on Steam, sign in to the account you want to use, open the game’s Steam store page while the offer is active, and select the page’s claim or add-to-library control. Then check your Library. First confirm the offer is free to keep: a free weekend only grants temporary access, while a free-to-play game is a separate access model.
Claim a free-to-keep game
- Sign in to Steam. Use the account where you want the game to remain in your Library.
- Open the game’s Steam store page during the offer window. Check the offer’s start and end times, time zone, regional eligibility, and terms.
- Read what the offer grants. Look for wording that says the game is free to claim or can be added to your library and kept. The button label can vary by offer.
- Use the claim or add-to-library control shown on the page. Complete any confirmation Steam presents.
- Check your Library. Confirm the game appears under the account you used to claim it.
A free-to-keep offer is available only during its stated claim window. For example, a 2K Steam announcement on March 16, 2023, said Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep: A Wonderlands One-Shot Adventure could be claimed until March 23 at 10 a.m. PT and then kept in the library. That promotion has expired; it is an example of the offer type, not evidence that the game is free now.

Know whether access is permanent or temporary

What to know about free-to-play games
Steam Support says free-to-play games are free to download and play without a subscription or credit card. Some Steam accounts may still have community-feature restrictions: Steam describes accounts with no purchased game or funded Steam Wallet as “Limited User” accounts. Individual games can also state additional account limitations on their store pages. Optional in-game purchases are separate from downloading and playing the game. If the game does not appear in your Library
- Make sure you are signed in to the account you intended to use.
- Check that the offer is still open and available in your region.
- Revisit the game’s store page and see whether the action completed or whether the page describes temporary access instead.
- For a free weekend, check the stated end time: the Library listing does not mean access lasts permanently.
