Short answer: Cite the exact work, communication, announcement, thesis, or archival record that supports the mathematical statement, then explain the credit history separately in your prose. Name the mathematician whose contribution was delayed or disputed, preserve the chronology of communication, announcement, submission, publication, and later acknowledgment, and support every historical assertion with an appropriate record.
A bibliography entry identifies a source; it does not by itself establish who contributed an idea or when the mathematical community learned of it. Follow the destination journal or publisher’s style, but make the historical account intelligible even when the required reference format is highly abbreviated.

The two jobs your citation must perform
A disputed-credit article has two related but distinct tasks. First, it must let readers verify the mathematics: which theorem, construction, proof, data set, or definition are you discussing, and where can they find it? Second, it must explain the history of contribution: who communicated an idea, who announced it, who proved it, who published it, and who was later acknowledged. Treating those tasks as one leads to vague or unfair attribution.
| Task | What to provide | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Support the mathematical claim | The source actually consulted, with a page, theorem, section, proposition, figure, or archival location when available. | Readers can check the statement rather than relying on an eponym or a later textbook. |
| Explain credit and priority | A dated chronology and prose naming each relevant contributor and the evidence for their role. | Readers can distinguish publication priority from earlier communication, announcement, or independent work. |
| Represent disagreement | Primary records and reputable historical scholarship, with competing interpretations attributed to their authors. | A contested conclusion is not presented as an established fact. |
The American Mathematical Society’s Ethical Guidelines describe correct attribution as essential because recognition encourages creativity and shows when, where, and sometimes how ideas entered mathematical thought. The same guidelines, in the Council-minutes PDF dated January 9, 2015, explicitly call for appropriate credit to unpublished materials and announced results. That is an ethical standard, not a statistic about how often disputes occur; no reliable prevalence figure is established for this topic.

Start by defining the exact result
State the claim narrowly
“The discovery of the theorem” is usually too broad. Identify the proposition, algorithm, counterexample, conjecture, notation, or proof step at issue. If a paper contains several results, specify the theorem number or the section and explain which part has a disputed history. A narrow statement prevents a citation to a source that proves a related but different result.
Record the source you actually used
Prefer the original article, proceedings paper, thesis, dated correspondence, lecture notes, announcement, or manuscript when it is accessible. A later survey can help orient readers, but it should not replace the earliest source when your sentence makes a priority claim. Record the title as it appears, the author or authors, publication or communication date, and a locator such as a page, theorem, section, or archive collection.
Separate contribution types
One person may formulate a conjecture, another may find a proof, and a third may supply a key lemma or a clearer exposition. “Who is credited?” is therefore incomplete unless you add “for what contribution?” Do not let a conventional eponym, a textbook label, or the name on a later paper stand in for that analysis.

Priority disputes become confusing when every date is called a “discovery date.” Use the record’s own verbs and keep the events separate.
| Event | What it establishes | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Private communication | An idea or result was conveyed to a particular person or group at a documented time. | That the result was publicly available or formally proved. |
| Public announcement | The result was presented to an audience or otherwise made known publicly. | That a complete proof or publication existed. |
| Submission | A manuscript was sent to a journal, publisher, or proceedings editor. | That it was accepted, correct, or publicly accessible. |
| Publication | A version appeared in the cited venue and can be located by readers. | That no earlier communication or independent derivation occurred. |
| Independent derivation | Another mathematician reached the same result without relying on the first work, if the evidence supports that conclusion. | That the two contributions were identical in method or scope. |
| Later acknowledgment | An author or community subsequently recognized another person’s role. | That the acknowledgment resolves every question about timing or extent. |
Build a private timeline before writing. For each entry, note the date, record type, participants, exact wording, and what the item proves. A dated letter may establish communication but not the content of a proof; a conference announcement may establish public notice but not a published argument. If a date is approximate, say so rather than converting it into a precise day.

Match evidence to the strength of the claim
Use a source hierarchy based on provenance
- Contemporaneous primary records: published papers, proceedings, theses, dated letters, lecture notes, announcements, manuscripts, and archival files.
- Reputable historical analysis: scholarship that cites and interprets those records, especially when the surviving evidence is incomplete.
- Retrospective summaries: useful for orientation, but insufficient alone for a sentence accusing a person of taking credit or suppressing a result.
Ask what each source actually establishes. A bibliography can prove that a paper exists; it cannot prove that its author was first to conceive an idea. A later memoir can describe an exchange, but its retrospective account should be identified as such and checked against contemporaneous correspondence where possible.
Make contested interpretations visible
When historians disagree, attribute the disagreement: “Historian A argues that the announcement predates the published proof, while the surviving correspondence documents only a private communication.” This wording tells readers which part is documented and which part is interpretation. Do not turn an unresolved debate into a single unqualified sentence.

Reserve serious allegations for documented evidence
Use “stole,” “plagiarized,” or “suppressed” only when reliable evidence supports that specific allegation. The AMS guidelines define knowingly presenting another person’s mathematical discovery as one’s own as plagiarism, but the existence of a priority dispute does not itself prove plagiarism. Safer verbs include “announced,” “published,” “communicated,” “proved,” “independently obtained,” “acknowledged,” and “credited.”
How to cite the published mathematical source
Give readers enough information to locate the exact item you consulted. Include the author name as it appears on the work, the full title, venue, volume or issue when relevant, year, page range, and a DOI or other stable identifier if the target style requests it. Add the theorem, proposition, section, or page in the surrounding sentence when the claim depends on a particular passage.
If the destination uses AMS style, the USC Libraries’ AMS guide describes three in-text approaches: bracketed sequential numbers, author-and-year citations, and alphanumeric keys. Choose one and use it consistently. Its examples show that a book reference can include the author, title, publisher, publication city, year, and Mathematical Reviews number. An online journal example includes the article title, abbreviated journal title, volume, year, issue, pages, DOI, and MR number. These are examples, not permission to ignore the target journal’s current instructions.

Attach the locator to the mathematical sentence
Do not make readers guess which part of a long paper supports your statement. Write, for example, that the published proof appears in a named theorem or on specified pages. If the source has no stable pagination, identify the section, proposition, paragraph, or archival folio that the reader can use.

Unpublished material can be ethically important when it documents an announced result or an earlier communication. Identify it as unpublished and describe its form accurately: a dated letter, lecture notes, conference announcement, thesis, manuscript, or personal communication. Do not present an inaccessible rumor as if it were a public publication.
Archival manuscript details
For a manuscript in an archive, the University of Chicago Libraries recommend enough information to lead readers directly to the item: creator, title or description, date, publication information if applicable, collection, box and folder, and repository. Include the archive’s own identifier when one exists. If you consulted a digital scan, preserve the collection and item details rather than citing only a generic website title.
Practical reference patterns
Adapt these patterns to the required style and the facts you can verify:
Creator. Description or title. Date. Collection name, box and folder. Repository.
Author. “Title of manuscript or lecture notes.” Unpublished manuscript, date, repository or institution.
Author, personal communication to recipient, date.
A personal communication normally cannot be independently retrieved by readers. Identify it in the text or notes as the style guide requires, and do not use it as the sole support for a claim that can be documented in a published or archived record.

How to give credit for an earlier result
Put the historical credit in clear prose, not only in a reference list. A useful structure is: “The result was published by one author in a named work and date, while a primary record or reliable historical study documents an earlier announcement, communication, or contribution by another mathematician; the evidence therefore supports crediting both contributions in their distinct roles.” Use this structure only when every clause is documented, and replace broad labels with the exact event the record supports.
Choose verbs that match the evidence
- Announced: use for a documented public presentation or notice.
- Communicated: use for a documented exchange, letter, or private transmission.
- Published: use when the work appeared in a citable venue.
- Proved: use only when the record shows a proof, not merely a claim or announcement.
- Independently obtained: use when evidence supports a separate derivation.
- Acknowledged or credited: use for a later recognition, without implying that it settles priority.
Name the mathematician when their contribution matters to your argument. “An earlier result existed” hides the person whose career and intellectual contribution are at stake.
How do I cite a disputed mathematical result?
Present the mathematical source and the dispute as adjacent but separate pieces of evidence. First explain what the cited paper proves or states. Then identify the earlier record and describe the disagreement over timing, contribution, or interpretation. Finally, state the limited conclusion the evidence supports.
For example, a careful paragraph might say that a theorem appears in a published article, that dated correspondence documents an earlier communication of the central idea by another mathematician, and that historians disagree about whether the communication included a complete proof. That paragraph gives publication credit, communication credit, and the unresolved question without claiming more than the records show.

- Define the mathematical claim. Write one sentence naming the exact theorem, idea, construction, or proof step.
- Collect the earliest accessible source. Look for the original article, proceedings paper, thesis, announcement, lecture notes, correspondence, or manuscript.
- Record precise locators. Capture page, theorem, section, folio, collection, box, folder, or item number.
- Build the event timeline. Separate private communication, public announcement, submission, publication, independent derivation, and later acknowledgment.
- List each person’s contribution. Distinguish formulation, proof, example, lemma, exposition, or dissemination.
- Test each priority statement. Ask whether the evidence proves precedence, merely documents awareness, or supports only a historian’s interpretation.
- Find reputable historical analysis. Use scholarship to explain gaps and disagreements, while checking its references to primary records.
- Draft the factual citation. Identify the source consulted and attach the mathematical locator.
- Draft the credit sentence. Name contributors and use only verbs supported by the record.
- Apply the destination style. Convert references to the journal’s current AMS, Chicago, or other required format without changing the underlying facts.
- Audit for overstatement. Remove any claim that turns an announcement into a proof, a submission into a publication, or a disputed interpretation into a settled verdict.
Comparing competing accounts of priority
When two histories conflict, compare the accounts by record type and provenance rather than by rhetorical confidence.

| Comparison axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Record type | Is the account based on a published paper, dated correspondence, an announcement, an archive, or a retrospective recollection? |
| Chronology | Which event is earlier: communication, announcement, submission, publication, or independent derivation? |
| Scope | Does the record concern the same theorem and method, or only a related observation? |
| Contemporaneity | Was the account created at the time, or decades later? |
| Interpretation | What does the source explicitly say, and what is inferred by the historian? |
| Completeness | Are relevant letters, manuscripts, or publication records missing? |
Report uncertainty proportionately. “The surviving correspondence documents an earlier communication, but its technical content is unclear” is stronger scholarship than an unqualified claim of priority based on an incomplete file.
AMS and Chicago implementation choices
AMS-style references
Use the target publication’s instructions for punctuation, abbreviations, ordering, and required identifiers. The USC Libraries guide’s three in-text systems—sequential brackets, author-year, and alphanumeric keys—are alternatives, not elements to mix. The reference list should contain the complete information required by the chosen system, while the prose carries the historical explanation.
Chicago notes and bibliography
Chicago’s official sample guide illustrates full notes, shortened notes, and bibliography entries; the Chicago FAQ says its guidance reflects the 18th edition (2024). A full note identifies the source on first mention, a shortened note identifies it thereafter, and the bibliography provides the publication record. For an archival manuscript, include the creator, title or description, date, publication information when applicable, collection, box and folder, and repository. Use the Manual and the destination’s instructions for exact punctuation and ordering.
Do not retrofit a source into a style merely because the format looks authoritative. Citation style is a navigation system. The credit claim still belongs in readable prose backed by evidence.
Common mistakes and how to repair them
- Listing only the famous eponym. Repair: cite the specific work and name other documented contributors.
- Using a later textbook as proof of priority. Repair: locate the earliest article, announcement, correspondence, or manuscript and cite the later book only for its exposition.
- Calling every early event a discovery. Repair: use the precise event verb and date.
- Hiding an unpublished source in a footnote. Repair: identify its form, date, repository, and archival locator, and explain its evidentiary limits.
- Presenting one historian’s interpretation as fact. Repair: attribute the interpretation and summarize the primary evidence.
- Accusing plagiarism from a priority dispute alone. Repair: reserve the allegation for documented evidence; otherwise describe the chronology neutrally.
- Changing citation systems mid-article. Repair: select the destination’s system and apply it consistently.
- Repeating the bibliography instead of explaining credit. Repair: keep source identification in the reference and put the contribution history in the narrative.
Why this level of attribution matters
The AMS ethical guidance connects attribution with both fairness and the transmission of mathematical knowledge. Its statement that correct attribution “informs the community of when, where, and sometimes how original ideas entered into the chain of mathematical thought” explains why a bare citation is inadequate in a disputed case. Giving credit to an unpublished material or announced result also recognizes that mathematical knowledge can be valuable before a formal publication appears.
Accurate attribution does not require choosing a winner when the record cannot support one. It requires preserving the chronology, distinguishing roles, identifying the sources, and making uncertainty visible. That practice lets readers verify the mathematics and understand the people behind its development.
Quick Recap
A compact final checklist
- Is the mathematical claim specific enough to identify?
- Did you cite the source actually consulted?
- Can a reader find the relevant page, theorem, section, or archival item?
- Did you separate communication, announcement, submission, publication, independent work, and acknowledgment?
- Did you name each person for the contribution the record supports?
- Are contested interpretations attributed to their sources?
- Are “proved,” “published,” “announced,” and “independently obtained” used precisely?
- Does the reference follow the destination’s current style?
- Have you avoided unsupported accusations and invented prevalence statistics?
