Set OBS to constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee your internet connection can sustain them: test your setup and use a bitrate that streams reliably.
Recommended bitrate for YouTube Live at 1080p30
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists these minimum and recommended bitrates for a 1920 × 1080 stream at 30 fps. The figures are for the ingestion codec you select, so check which codec OBS is actually sending.

| Ingestion codec | YouTube minimum | YouTube recommended |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| AV1 | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| H.265 / HEVC | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s current English-language recommendations, retrieved on October 4, 2026; they are not measurements of your connection or a promise of stable delivery. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance for updates.
Set 1080p30 and bitrate in OBS
- Set the output resolution and frame rate. In OBS, open Settings > Video. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1920×1080 and Common FPS Values to 30. Confirm the output resolution, not just the canvas resolution. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide for the settings areas; its overview was published in 2021, so labels may vary by version.
- Set the video bitrate. Open Settings > Output, select the streaming output settings, and enter the recommendation matching your ingestion codec: 14,000 Kbps for H.264 or 10,000 Kbps for AV1/H.265. YouTube’s table also gives minimums of 5,000 Kbps and 4,000 Kbps respectively; treat these as minimum guidance, not ideal targets for every connection.
- Use CBR. YouTube lists constant bitrate encoding for live ingestion. In OBS’s streaming output settings, choose CBR for rate control.
- Set keyframes to two seconds. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Set the interval to 2 seconds in the streaming encoder settings.
- Connect OBS to YouTube and test. Use YouTube’s RTMPS ingest option where available; YouTube recommends RTMPS. Before the intended broadcast, run a test with similar motion and audio, then monitor YouTube stream health and OBS for dropped frames or connection errors.
Available codecs and exact encoder controls depend on your OBS version, operating system, and hardware encoder. The important checks are that OBS sends the codec you intend, uses the matching bitrate recommendation, and outputs 1920×1080 at 30 fps.

Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain
YouTube advises choosing a quality that can be streamed reliably on your internet connection and recommends testing upload capacity. A speed-test result is useful context, but it does not establish that your route to YouTube will remain stable at that rate for an entire stream. OBS also notes that dropped frames can mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate.
- Test at the time and from the connection you expect to use for the broadcast.
- Use representative movement and audio; a static screen may not reveal all encoding or delivery problems.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages and OBS’s dropped-frame behavior during the test.
- If frames drop or the connection disconnects, investigate stability and reduce the bitrate if needed rather than assuming the encoder alone is responsible.
The stable bitrate for a particular home, ISP route, ingest server, or time of day is not established by YouTube’s recommendation table. For broader stream settings, see YouTube’s live stream settings help.

Troubleshoot common bitrate and delivery problems
| Symptom | What to check | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| OBS reports dropped frames | OBS identifies an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain as possible causes. | Test connection stability and lower the video bitrate, then test again while monitoring OBS and YouTube stream health. See OBS stream connection troubleshooting. |
| YouTube stream health reports problems | Compare the actual output resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval with your intended settings. | Correct the mismatched setting and repeat a representative test. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health. |
| The selected bitrate is higher than your connection can reliably hold | A speed test alone may not reflect sustained delivery to YouTube. | Reduce bitrate until tests are stable, even if that means using less than the recommended figure. |
Or let it run in the cloud
