How to Choose Your Next Book Based on What You Enjoy Reading

The best next book is not necessarily the most popular title in your favorite genre. It is the one that matches the parts of previous books you actually enjoyed—and fits what you want from reading right now.

Start with one or two books that held your attention. Identify the specific ingredients you liked, use those as search terms, then compare a short list by mood, pace, themes, format, and the amount of novelty you want. A recommendation tool, librarian, bookseller, or friend can widen the list; your own reasons for loving a book should decide what stays on it.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

1. Start with a book you genuinely loved

Choose a recent favorite rather than a book you feel you ought to have liked. It can be fiction, nonfiction, a memoir, a graphic novel, or any other format. The useful question is not “What did I rate five stars?” but “What kept me reading, and what made the experience satisfying?”

The StoryGraph’s recommendation guidance begins with a book you loved and asks readers to look for recurring elements across favorites. Use that approach even if you are choosing from memory. One favorite can reveal a strong preference; two or three can reveal a pattern.

Ask what worked at several levels

  • Subject: Was the book about a profession, historical period, place, scientific idea, family problem, or social question you wanted to explore?
  • Genre and subgenre: Did you want a police procedural, romantic comedy, historical fantasy, literary family saga, practical biography, or another more precise category?
  • Themes: Did it examine ambition, grief, friendship, identity, justice, belonging, or recovery?
  • Characters and relationships: Were you drawn to a competent investigator, an unreliable narrator, a found family, a rivalry, or a slow-building romance?
  • Setting: Did the location or time period create the appeal, or would the story have worked anywhere?
  • Plot and tropes: Did you enjoy a locked-room puzzle, a quest, an inheritance dispute, a second chance, or a secret revealed late?
  • Voice: Was the prose conversational, funny, lyrical, sharply observant, experimental, or highly explanatory?
  • Structure and ending: Did you like a fast sequence of revelations, multiple viewpoints, a framed narrative, a conclusive ending, or productive ambiguity?

Write down the elements in your own words. “I like fantasy” is a starting point; “I want a hopeful, character-driven fantasy with a close-knit group and a quick pace” gives a search tool or human recommender something useful to work with.

2. Separate your lasting taste from what you want today

Your reading history describes what you usually enjoy. It does not dictate what will feel right tonight. A reader who normally chooses dense historical fiction may currently want something funny and short. Someone who often reads light mysteries may want an intense, unsettling book for a weekend.

Use two filters

Filter Questions to ask What it changes
Durable taste Which genres, themes, character dynamics, settings, and styles repeatedly satisfy me? Creates a dependable pool of candidates.
Current appetite What mood, pace, length, topic, and emotional intensity do I have capacity for now? Chooses among that pool—or deliberately overrides it.

Describe your current appetite with concrete terms: soothing, funny, tense, hopeful, intellectually demanding, escapist, short, immersive, or unfamiliar. Mood and pace can matter more than a broad shelf label when you are deciding what to open next.

Preference is allowed to change. StoryGraph says readers can edit their survey answers or take the survey again when their tastes shift. Treat any profile as a snapshot, not a permanent identity.

3. Turn a favorite into a useful recommendation brief

Before searching, make a short brief. It prevents a recommendation engine or another person from treating a single genre word as your entire taste.

A five-minute brief

  1. Name the seed: Write the title and author of one or two books you enjoyed.
  2. List three reasons: Complete the sentence “I loved this because…” with specific details.
  3. Set the mood: Choose the emotional experience you want now, such as comforting, playful, suspenseful, or challenging.
  4. Set the pace and commitment: Decide whether you want a page-turner or a slow build, and whether a short book or a long one suits your time.
  5. Choose your stretch: Say whether you want a close read-alike or one familiar element combined with something new.

For example, a brief might say: “I enjoyed a mystery because of the observant detective, dry humor, and tight pacing. I want another mystery with an unusual setting, but not graphic violence, and I have time for a medium-length paperback.” That is far more actionable than “find me a good mystery.”

4. Search by title, author, genre, and experience

Use several discovery routes instead of trusting one list. Each route exposes different assumptions, so compare the results against your brief.

Use a loved title as a seed

Goodreads asks readers to provide titles or genres they have enjoyed to receive recommendations. Amazon’s Your Books feature describes recommendations based on one title, a group of titles, or reading history, and lets readers organize books by genre, author, or series. These are discovery features, not guarantees that every result will fit you.

When a result appears, ask which part of your seed book it shares. A recommendation may match the setting but not the tone, or the genre but not the pace. Keep it only if the shared quality is one you actually valued.

Search by the experience you want

StoryGraph describes filters for mood, pace, fiction or nonfiction, and genre. Its survey guidance also encourages readers to name themes and genre tropes. Combine filters rather than stopping at “fiction” or “fantasy.” Useful combinations include:

  • Hopeful + fast-paced + found family
  • Darkly funny + short + unreliable narrator
  • Reflective + nonfiction + nature writing
  • Romantic + low conflict + contemporary setting
  • High-stakes + investigative + multiple viewpoints

Fewer, sharper filters usually produce a more manageable list. If you select every possible preference, you may eliminate books that would have delighted you.

Use quizzes as prompts, not verdicts

The Penguin Random House quiz asks where you are reading, what kind of book you want, and which book you loved. Those questions are useful even if you do not use the resulting list. They remind you to include context—such as a commute, vacation, or bedtime—as well as content.

5. Ask a person who can hear the nuance

A librarian, bookseller, friend, or reading-group member can ask a follow-up question that a catalog cannot. Bring your recommendation brief and explain what you liked, what you want now, and what you would rather avoid.

The Associated Press describes a library director asking visitors, “What was the last book, TV show or movie that you really enjoyed?” The staff member then looks for related genres or themes. You can use the same prompt with a friend, adding: “What did you like about it?”

Questions that improve a human recommendation

  • “Do you know a book with this kind of relationship, but a lighter tone?”
  • “I liked the investigative structure, not necessarily the violence. What else uses that structure?”
  • “Which of these has the fastest opening?”
  • “Is there a version that works well as an audiobook?”
  • “What would you suggest if I want to stretch beyond my usual genre without making the mood much darker?”

Ask more than one person when possible. AP’s advice favors recommendations from varied sources, and different people notice different features in the same book.

6. Build a short list instead of choosing from an endless catalog

Collect three to five candidates, then stop searching temporarily. An unlimited list creates the illusion of choice while making the decision harder.

Compare candidates on your own axes

Axis What to check Why it matters
Genre or subgenre Does the category match the experience you want, or only the label of your previous favorite? Separates a true fit from a superficial resemblance.
Theme, trope, or character dynamic Which specific ingredient from your favorite appears here? Tests whether the recommendation shares the reason you cared.
Mood and tone Hopeful, comic, tense, melancholy, disturbing, meditative, or another tone? Prevents a good book from arriving at the wrong emotional moment.
Pace Does the description suggest a rapid plot, gradual development, or episodic structure? Matches your available attention and reading energy.
Format and length Print, ebook, audiobook, library copy, and approximate length. Turns an abstract preference into a book you can actually start.
Familiarity versus exploration How many elements are safely familiar, and how many are new? Lets you choose a comfortable read or a controlled stretch.

Choose two or three priority axes. The perfect match on every dimension may not exist, and insisting on one can remove interesting options. For instance, you might prioritize tone and pace while accepting a new setting, or prioritize the theme and format while allowing a slower opening.

  • Stretch level: Familiar, moderate stretch, or substantial departure?
  • Concern: Is there a content, length, or tone issue that could make you stop?

You can assign each priority a score from 1 to 5 to make your thinking visible. This is a personal sorting device, not a validated prediction of enjoyment. A candidate with one exceptional match may be better than one with average scores everywhere.

7. Check availability and format before committing

A recommendation is useful only if it is practical for you to read. Check your own library catalog, ebook service, audiobook catalog, or preferred retailer rather than assuming a format is available.

  • Confirm the edition and language you want.
  • Check whether an audiobook has a narrator whose style suits you, if narration matters.
  • Look at length when your schedule is tight; page counts can differ by edition.
  • Check waitlists and loan periods for library copies.
  • Make sure a series book is the correct entry point if the recommendation belongs to one.

Keep a second choice ready if a hold is long or a format is unavailable. That preserves the momentum of choosing without forcing you to buy or read a book that is inconvenient.

8. Choose the first book for joy, not obligation

When two candidates fit, begin with the one you are most curious to open. Jocelyn Luizzi, quoted by the Associated Press, advises: “Your first book should be something that you think will be joyful.” Joy can mean amusement, fascination, comfort, suspense, or the pleasure of learning—not only a cheerful subject.

Do not select a difficult book merely because it appears important, prestigious, or adjacent to your usual taste. Save it for a moment when its demands match your energy. A controlled stretch is valuable; an obligation that drains your reading habit is not.

9. Give yourself a stopping rule

Choosing well does not guarantee that every book will work. Your response after several chapters is new evidence. If the voice irritates you, the pace is wrong, or the subject is weighing on you, you may change course.

Jess Bone of University College London, quoted by AP in advice about putting down a sluggish book, says reading “shouldn’t feel like a burden.” You do not need to finish every selection to justify borrowing it, buying it, or beginning it.

Distinguish a slow start from a mismatch

  • Continue briefly when the premise interests you and the book’s intended pace is clear.
  • Pause and switch when your current mood has changed or you no longer have the time the book requires.
  • Stop when the central experience conflicts with what you wanted, not merely because the book is demanding.

Record why you stopped. “Too bleak right now” is different from “I dislike first-person narration,” and the distinction will improve your next brief.

10. Refresh your profile after each read

After finishing—or abandoning—a book, add one sentence to your notes: “More of this,” “less of this,” or “only when I am in the mood.” Over time, the notes become more useful than a star rating alone.

Look for patterns across several books

  • Do you enjoy a genre only when it has humor or a strong relationship plot?
  • Do you prefer the subject of nonfiction but the narrative drive of a novel?
  • Are you consistently choosing shorter books during busy periods?
  • Do you like dark themes when the ending is hopeful?
  • Are you drawn to a trope, or to the particular voice of one author?

Update your discovery-tool answers when those patterns change. StoryGraph specifically allows survey responses to be revised, which makes its filters more useful when your current preferences differ from your older reading history.

What should I read next? A repeatable decision path

  1. Pick one or two books you truly enjoyed.
  2. Write down the subject, genre, theme, characters, setting, plot devices, voice, pace, mood, and ending qualities that mattered.
  3. Circle the two or three qualities you want most now.
  4. Add current constraints: format, length, availability, and emotional capacity.
  5. Generate candidates through a title-based tool, mood and genre filters, a quiz, and at least one human recommendation.
  6. Reduce the results to three to five books.
  7. Compare them on your chosen priorities, then select the one that makes you want to start.
  8. Stop or switch if the book becomes a burden, and record what you learned.

The principle behind the method

Your favorite books are evidence, not rules. A recommendation becomes useful when it explains the connection between a previous pleasure and a possible next read. Genre narrows the territory; themes, tropes, tone, pace, and format identify the particular experience. Current mood decides whether that experience is right today. Human judgment and practical availability turn a long catalog into a choice you can actually make.
