Choose thumbstick tension and shape by feel, not by a supposed universal best: compare the three mechanical tension settings with the same topper and sensitivity curve, then compare the classic, tall, and dome toppers for comfort, reach, and control. Microsoft documents these options but does not rank them for particular games or players.
What you can adjust—and what each control changes
The Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 has three manually selected thumbstick tension settings, adjusted with the included tool. Microsoft does not publish force measurements for the settings or identify one as more precise than another. The controller also supports thumbstick sensitivity curves in the Xbox Accessories app. Tension changes the stick’s mechanical feel; the curve changes how stick input is translated. They are separate controls, and Microsoft does not publish a formula for combining them. Xbox’s Series 2 specifications describe both adjustments.

How to compare the three tension settings
- Choose one thumbstick topper and keep it installed throughout the tension comparison.
- Keep the Xbox Accessories app sensitivity curve and in-game sensitivity unchanged. If you adjust either during the comparison, you will be changing more than one variable.
- Use the adjustment tool to try each of the three tension positions. Start with the position that feels middle-of-the-road to you, then compare the lower and higher positions.
- In the same game or training mode, make small, repeatable movements and notice both resistance and whether the stick feels controllable. Try each position in comparable situations rather than judging one during a different task.
- Choose the lightest resistance that still feels controllable to you. This is a practical way to compare the options, not an official Xbox prescription or a guarantee of better aim.
More resistance does not automatically mean more precision. Likewise, a sensitivity curve should not be treated as a guaranteed compensation for a particular tension setting; the cited Microsoft material does not establish either result.

How to choose a thumbstick shape
Microsoft lists classic, tall, and dome thumbstick toppers for the Series 2. The options establish what is available, not which shape suits a specific game. Compare them by how they feel in your hand and how easily you can reach and move them without strain.

- Dome: Compare its feel and controllability directly with the classic and tall options; there is no manufacturer-published game-specific advantage to rely on.
For a fair shape comparison, keep tension and the sensitivity curve the same, switch only the topper, and try each shape in similar play. Judge comfort, reach, and control for yourself rather than treating a general shape preference as a performance finding.
Check what comes in your package before buying toppers
Contents differ between Microsoft’s U.S. full Series 2 and Core product listings. The full listing includes additional toppers and other accessories; the Core listing names the controller, adjustment tool, and USB-C cable. Microsoft’s full Series 2 listing and Core listing give the respective contents. Bundles can vary by region, retailer, or revision, so check the current listing for the package you are considering.

A practical decision rule
- For tension, compare all three positions with topper and sensitivity held constant; select the resistance that feels controllable without being heavier than you prefer.
- For shape, compare comfort, reach, and control with tension and sensitivity unchanged.
- For accessories, compare the exact contents of your local controller listing with what you want to try or replace before buying a component pack.
