When several games launch in one week, choose by personal fit and realistic play time—not by marketing volume or release-day pressure. Then verify each contender’s platform, regional release details, editions, access options and refund terms before you spend.
How to narrow the list to games you will actually play
- Rank personal interest. Compare each game’s genre, premise and connection to the kinds of games you enjoy. A heavily promoted release is not automatically a better match than a quieter one.
- Be realistic about your time. Ask whether you have the time and energy to start each game soon. A title you are eager to play with friends or discuss while it is new may deserve priority; one that will remain appealing later may be easier to defer.
- Set a limit before browsing editions. Decide how many games you can reasonably start and what you are willing to spend. If more titles still make the cut than your time or budget allows, keep the top choices and revisit the rest after launch.
Check that each game is available where and when you expect
Use the official store listing for your platform and region. A date on a general release calendar does not establish the exact time, supported system or local availability. Nintendo says eShop release timing is decided by the publisher and varies by title; its usual US timing also differs between digital-only games and games sold physically, with exceptions. Check the Nintendo eShop release-date and time guidance for the specific game.

A store page appearing early does not necessarily mean customers can buy or download the game then. Microsoft’s publishing documentation distinguishes when a store page becomes discoverable from when a product can be acquired or played. Check the listing’s actual purchase and availability status rather than treating a visible page as confirmation of launch access: Microsoft Store scheduling documentation.

A 2022 University of Alberta ASGAARD lab study of 23,485 Steam games found that 48% of the studied games with concrete release dates delayed their initial release; among delayed games, the median delay was 14 days. Those are historical results from that dataset, not a prediction for current releases or other storefronts. The study’s paper describes its sample and findings.

Compare the ways you can buy or access each game
Before paying, compare the standard and premium editions, physical and digital availability, and any platform-specific features that matter to you. Check what each edition actually includes on the official listing; a higher-priced edition is not automatically a better fit. If you use a subscription service, confirm that the specific game is included in its catalogue for your region and platform. The existence of a subscription or multiple formats does not establish that a particular upcoming title is available through them.
Physical copies and digital console stores are different purchase routes, but the options and terms depend on the game and market. For context on Australian console digital stores and physical formats, see the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s Digital Platform Services Inquiry interim report. It does not establish stock or availability for any specific new release.

Check cancellation and refund terms before pre-ordering
Pre-order rules vary by storefront, region and whether a download or early-access period has begun. Read the policy that applies to your account before placing an order; do not assume a cancellation window on one platform applies to another.
- Steam: Steam says a pre-order may be refunded any time before release. If the purchase includes Advance Access, a refund request must be made before that access begins; after it starts, standard refund rules apply. See Steam’s refund policy.
- PlayStation Store, United States: The US policy allows cancellation of games and add-ons within 14 days if downloading or streaming has not started. Once it has started, purchases are generally not eligible for cancellation unless the content is faulty. Digital pre-order timing depends on how far ahead of release the order was placed, and automatic downloads may occur if enabled. These terms are US-specific; consult the policy for your market at PlayStation Store pre-order cancellations.
- Nintendo eShop, United States: Nintendo says pre-order payment is processed no sooner than seven days before release. Cancellation is possible before payment processing and preloading. Check Nintendo’s US eShop pre-order guidance for the applicable conditions.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
