To make a connected monitor your primary display, open Settings > System > Display, select that monitor, then under Multiple displays choose Make this my main display. Use Identify first if you are unsure which numbered screen is which.
Set the primary display in Windows

In the display layout, select the monitor you want to make primary. If needed, select Identify; Windows displays a number on each screen so you can match it to the layout. Do not assume display 1 must be the primary screen.

Primary display, screen arrangement, and projection mode are different settings
The primary-display choice designates which monitor is the main one. The numbered layout also lets you arrange screens to match their physical positions: drag them so the pointer moves naturally between them. Projection mode separately controls whether Windows extends, duplicates, or uses only one screen.
To change projection mode, press Windows key + P and choose the option you need:

- Extend creates one desktop spread across multiple displays, so you can move windows between them.
- Duplicate shows the same desktop on each display.
- PC screen only uses the PC display alone.
- Second screen only uses the other connected display alone.
Choose Extend when you want an extended multi-monitor desktop. Setting a monitor as primary does not itself switch projection mode.

Check that the cable is firmly connected to the PC or dock and to the monitor.

Open Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays and select Detect.

If the monitor still is not listed, check the dock, adapter, and connection path. Changing the primary-display setting cannot fix a screen Windows has not detected.

If a second or additional monitor will not work
A PC’s graphics or display adapter may not support the number of screens you are trying to use. Microsoft recommends checking with the adapter manufacturer for its supported display count. A splitter duplicates a single video signal; it does not create two independent extended displays. If an existing multi-monitor setup stops working, press Windows key + P and verify that the intended mode—often Extend—is selected, then check the cables, dock, and connected accessories. Windows 10 support status
Microsoft’s multi-monitor instructions include Windows 10, but support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Under the ended support arrangement, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. The display setting can still be available on a Windows 10 PC, but the operating system is no longer supported in that way. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 support notice.
