How to Choose Upholstery That Holds Up to Pets and Everyday Wear

Choose upholstery by matching its construction and care requirements to the damage your household is most likely to cause. Cats mainly create snagging problems; dogs and children add muddy paws, spills and abrasion; shedding makes hair removal a surface-texture issue. No fabric is universally pet-proof, and an impressive abrasion number does not guarantee years of service. The reliable approach is to evaluate weave, pile, cleaning code, documented test method and the rest of the fabric’s construction together.

Start with the kind of damage you need to control

Ask what actually shortens the life or spoils the appearance of your sofa. A household with an indoor cat that kneads on the arms needs a different surface from one with a large dog that jumps up after wet walks. Use the dominant wear mode to narrow the field before comparing fiber names or colors.

Claws and snagging

Loose loops, bouclé-like textures and long raised piles give claws something to catch. A pulled loop can distort a whole line of fabric even when the underlying yarn is strong. Revolution’s pet upholstery guide recommends smooth, tightly woven, low-pile surfaces for this reason and specifically contrasts them with loose bouclé and long-pile velvet. That is a manufacturer recommendation, not a guarantee for every tightly woven fabric.

Run a fingernail lightly across a swatch, then press and release it as a cat’s paw might. If loops stand proud, yarns separate easily or the surface catches on a rough nail, treat snag risk as high. Inspect welts, seams and skirt edges as carefully as the broad seat: exposed cords and loose edges are common claw targets.

Spills, mud and repeated cleaning

For dogs, children or anyone who eats on the sofa, the cleaning system matters at least as much as the initial stain resistance. Check the exact care label and the furniture maker’s instructions, not just a marketing phrase such as performance or pet friendly. A finish may repel a fresh spill yet still be damaged by the wrong solvent, excess water or aggressive scrubbing.

Ask whether you can blot with a water-based cleaner, must use a solvent, may use either without saturating the cushion, or are limited to vacuuming and brushing. Those answers are represented by the common W, S, W/S and X codes, but the individual item’s instructions control if they differ from a general chart.

Daily friction and abrasion

Everyday sitting, sliding and rotating cushions wear the face of the cloth. Compare abrasion results only when the test method, pressure and specimen are identified. The Association for Contract Textiles (ACT) current high-traffic woven-upholstery guideline lists 30,000 double rubs with ASTM D4157 Wyzenbeek or 40,000 cycles with ASTM D4966 Martindale at 12 kPa. These are separate methods; ACT says they do not correlate and must not be converted into one another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ACT also warns that exceeding a guideline is not a lifespan promise. Care, maintenance, misuse, environment and the particular weave can change the result in a home. Treat a test figure as one screening data point, not as a prediction such as “this will last ten years.”

Shedding and trapped hair

Hair tends to lodge in deep pile, open loops and heavily napped surfaces. Smooth, closely woven cloth usually lets a rubber brush or vacuum remove hair more easily, although color and static affect what remains visible. View a swatch under strong light and rub a contrasting piece of fabric over it; this reveals how readily fibers catch lint and whether a shade will disguise your pet’s coat.

Compare the whole construction, not a fiber name

“Polyester,” “cotton,” “olefin” or “velvet” describes only part of an upholstery specification. ASTM notes that upholstery fabrics combine many construction variables and that no single performance specification covers every fabric type. Evaluate fiber, yarn size, weave or knit, backing, pile, finish, colorfastness and the way the fabric is sewn.

Construction or feature What to inspect Pet-household implication
Tight plain or close woven face Minimal gaps, little exposed loop, stable surface when stretched Generally gives claws fewer places to catch; confirm with a hands-on swatch test.
Looped, bouclé or raised texture Loops stand above the base; yarns can be lifted with a fingernail Higher snag opportunity for cats; choose only if you accept active nail trimming and supervision.
Long or dense pile Direction changes when brushed; hair disappears into the nap May feel soft but can retain hair and show pressure marks; ask how the maker recommends vacuuming.
Coated fabric Vinyl or urethane film over a textile or backing Wipe-clean behavior differs from woven cloth. Use the coating-specific specification and care instructions.
Applied stain or soil finish Named treatment, renewal instructions and exclusions Performance depends on the finish remaining intact; confirm permitted cleaners and re-treatment policy.

Appearance and comfort still matter. A tightly woven cloth that feels too hot, slippery or scratchy will not be successful if the household avoids using the furniture. Sit on a full cushion or a large sample, because a small swatch cannot show seam placement, nap shading or cushion compression.

Decode the cleaning code before you buy

The code is a starting boundary for safe products, not a complete stain-removal recipe. Follow the furniture maker’s procedure for dilution, blotting, drying and cushion removal.

Code General meaning Questions to ask the supplier
W Water-based upholstery cleaner is permitted. Is light damp blotting allowed, and can the cushion covers be removed? Which detergent and concentration are specified?
S Use a water-free solvent. Which solvent is approved, and what ventilation and colorfastness precautions apply?
W/S Water-based or solvent cleaning may be used, without saturating the fabric. Which method is preferred for this finish, and how is over-wetting prevented at seams and cushion interiors?
X Vacuum or brush only; liquid or solvent cleaning is not approved. What professional service, if any, is allowed for a serious stain, and how often should the surface be vacuumed?

Omba’s upholstery specification guide notes that performance fabric has no industry-wide definition. The term may refer to stain resistance, cleanability, fade resistance, abrasion rating, or a combination; the benefit may come from the fiber or an applied finish. Therefore, ask for the code and written instructions even when a salesperson uses “performance” as the headline.

Read abrasion numbers with the test method attached

Use the ACT figures as a way to interpret supplier data, not as a universal residential pass/fail rule. ACT’s high-traffic woven guideline is:

  • Wyzenbeek: 30,000 double rubs using ASTM D4157 with the approved number 10 cotton duck.
  • Martindale: 40,000 cycles using ASTM D4966 at 12 kPa.

The numbers describe different instruments, fabrics and contact conditions. ACT expressly says Wyzenbeek and Martindale results do not correlate, and results can vary substantially for some woven structures. A label that says “40,000 rubs” without naming the method is incomplete; do not assume it means 40,000 Wyzenbeek double rubs or that it exceeds the ACT benchmark.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not rank a 50,000 Wyzenbeek fabric against a 40,000 Martindale fabric by arithmetic. Request the method, standard revision, specimen preparation and whether the value is a minimum, average or a marketing-selected result. If the seller cannot provide those details, record the test result as unverified rather than treating it as equivalent evidence.

ACT’s published warning is direct: “Abrasion test results exceeding ACT Performance Guidelines are not an indicator of product lifespan. Multiple factors affect fabric durability and appearance retention.” In a home, cushion flipping, body oils, grit, sunlight, cleaning technique and pet behavior can dominate the outcome.

Check properties that abrasion testing misses

A durable-looking seat can still pill, lose color or open at the seams. When a supplier publishes additional laboratory results, record them alongside abrasion data.

Property Why it matters ACT woven-fabric guidance
Pilling Loose fibers form visible balls, an appearance problem that can accelerate with friction. Class 3 minimum for either ASTM D3511 or ASTM D4970 tests.
Breaking strength Measures force required to break the fabric in the warp and weft directions. At least 50 pounds in both warp and weft.
Seam slippage Shows how yarns pull apart beside a stitched seam when the cushion is loaded. At least 25 pounds in both warp and weft.
Colorfastness and dimensional change Relevant to sunlight, cleaning and fit after laundering or wet treatment. Obtain the supplier’s method and result; no universal value is established here.

ACT describes pilling as a surface aesthetic issue and cautions that laboratory tests cannot capture every real end-use condition. A fabric that meets all listed minima can still look poor if it is cleaned incorrectly or exposed to a harsh environment.

Know which standard applies to the fabric you are buying

ASTM D3597 covers plain, tufted or flocked woven upholstery fabrics for new indoor furniture. Its listed evaluations include strength, yarn slippage, abrasion, dimensional change, colorfastness, back-coating durability, flammability and Federal Trade Commission requirements. The page identifies D3597-02R18E01 as a referenced edition and D3597-02R24 as active; verify the current edition if a contract or commercial specification depends on it.

D3597 does not cover every upholstery construction. ASTM specifically notes that the combinations of fibers, yarns, coatings and structures are too numerous for one performance specification to fit all fabrics. For indoor vinyl-coated and urethane-coated upholstery, ASTM lists the separate D3690 standard, active as D3690-25. Ask whether the report you receive applies to the actual face fabric and coating, not merely to a similar textile.

A practical buying procedure

  1. Describe the household. Note the number and size of pets, whether cats climb or knead, whether dogs enter wet, how often people eat on the sofa, and whether the furniture sits in direct sun.
  2. Choose the primary failure you will tolerate least. Select snag resistance for claw-heavy homes, cleanability for spill-heavy homes, hair release for shedding and a balanced construction for general friction.
  3. Request a complete specification. Obtain fiber content, weave or pile description, backing or coating, finish, cleaning code, care sheet, colorfastness information and every abrasion result with its ASTM method.
  4. Reject vague numbers. A bare “30,000 rubs” statement is not comparable until Wyzenbeek or Martindale, pressure and test standard are identified.
  5. Inspect and handle a swatch. Stretch it across your hand, brush it in both directions, test a clean fingernail for snagging, and rub a contrasting cloth over it to see hair retention and crocking.
  6. Test the planned cleaning method in an inconspicuous area. Follow the written dilution and blotting instructions. Never substitute a household cleaner because its label says it works on fabric.
  7. Check sewing details on the furniture. Tight seams, protected corners and removable, correctly labeled covers can matter as much as the roll goods. Confirm that replacement covers use the same code and finish.
  8. Keep the documentation. Save the invoice, care sheet, test report and lot or color number. They are essential if a finish, seam or color problem needs a warranty assessment.

How common options compare for pet homes

The table below compares decision factors rather than declaring a universal winner. Actual performance depends on the specific product and its documented construction.

Option or feature Potential advantage Risk or question Best fit when
Smooth, tightly woven performance fabric Fewer obvious claw catches; often easier to vacuum. “Performance” is undefined without a code and test report; finishes can have cleaner restrictions. Cats and dogs share furniture and you want a balanced, low-maintenance surface.
Low-pile woven fabric Less hair hiding than deep pile while retaining a textile feel. Still requires a documented abrasion method and seam-slippage information. Shedding and daily sitting are larger issues than severe spills.
Looped or bouclé texture Distinctive look and tactile comfort. Raised loops can catch claws and pull. Homes without claw contact on the furniture, or owners prepared to manage access.
Long-pile velvet Soft hand and dramatic appearance. Nap can retain hair and show directional marks; cleaning instructions vary. Appearance and feel outweigh easy hair removal, with controlled pet access.
Vinyl- or urethane-coated upholstery Often permits surface wiping, subject to the exact care sheet. Coating durability, heat, cracking and cleaner compatibility must be documented under the appropriate standard. Wipe-clean behavior is the priority and the supplier provides coating-specific evidence.

How to interpret a manufacturer example

Revolution identifies its Sugarshack solid as 100% polypropylene, 54 inches wide, with a stated 30,000-double-rub rating and a pet- and kid-friendly tag. Those are Revolution’s product claims. Before buying fabric by the yard, confirm the current cleaning code, the ASTM method behind the rating, color availability, lot consistency and whether the material is intended for your furniture’s construction. The example shows why a useful specification includes fiber, width, test figure and intended-use label, but it does not establish that all polypropylene fabrics perform the same way.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A search for pet-friendly upholstery fabric by the yard can help locate swatches, but a listing is not proof of verified testing. Ask the seller for the original specification and care sheet, and assess color, hand, weave and hair release in person.

Maintenance that preserves the fabric you chose

  • Vacuum seams, cushion gaps and arm fronts on a schedule that matches shedding. Use the attachment recommended for the fabric so a stiff brush does not lift yarns.
  • Blot fresh liquid immediately with a clean absorbent cloth. Do not scrub, flood the cushion or use a disinfectant unless the care sheet expressly allows it.
  • Rotate and reverse cushions only when the furniture maker permits it; equalizing pressure can reduce localized wear, but some cushions have a fixed orientation.
  • Keep claws trimmed and provide an alternative scratching surface near the sofa. This reduces snag opportunities regardless of fabric.
  • Block direct sunlight when possible and follow the stated limits for removable-cover washing, drying and ironing.
  • After cleaning, dry the area completely before replacing cushions. Trapped moisture can affect backing, seams and odor even when the face appears clean.

Troubleshoot before replacing the upholstery

A loop has pulled

Do not cut the loop flush or pull it farther. Isolate the loose yarn, tuck it toward the backing with a blunt tool and ask the upholsterer or fabric maker for a repair method. Repeated pulls in the same location indicate a construction or access problem; move the cat’s scratching option and protect the edge while you decide whether to re-cover it.

A stain remains after approved cleaning

Stop escalating chemicals. Photograph the mark, record the product and dilution used, and compare the result with the written care procedure. A professional cleaner may be appropriate for W or W/S fabrics, while an X code generally limits you to vacuuming or brushing. Solvent and water methods are not interchangeable.

The fabric pills or looks shiny

Pilling is a surface appearance issue, not automatically a structural failure. Remove pills with a tool approved for upholstery rather than pulling them by hand, then investigate friction from clothing, blankets or cushions. Shiny areas can result from nap compression or soil; use only the maker’s maintenance method before considering a warranty claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The seam opens while the face looks intact

Ask for the seam-slippage result and inspect the stitch line, seam allowance and cushion fill. ACT lists 25 pounds in warp and weft as guidance for woven fabrics, but the actual furniture design and loading still matter. Do not infer that a high abrasion score rules out seam failure.

Questions to ask before placing the order

  • What is the exact cleaning code for this color and finish?
  • Which ASTM method produced the abrasion number, and what pressure or accessory was used?
  • Are pilling, breaking-strength and seam-slippage results available for this exact construction?
  • Is the surface woven, looped, piled, coated or treated with a finish, and what happens if that finish is removed by cleaning?
  • What vacuum, brush, solvent or water-based product does the maker approve?
  • Can I obtain a swatch from the same production lot and keep the specification with the order?
