There is no consumer tyre label that currently ranks abrasion in the European Union. To reduce particulate pollution responsibly, first choose a tyre in your vehicle’s approved size and specification, then compare the EU label’s wet-grip and rolling-resistance classes, look for documented and comparable abrasion or mileage data from the manufacturer, and keep the vehicle correctly maintained. Never trade away wet-weather grip, load or speed approval, or vehicle compatibility for an unverified environmental claim.
Tyre choice matters, but so do tyre pressure, alignment, load, road conditions and driving style. The most defensible approach is therefore a safety-first selection followed by practices that limit unnecessary wear.

What tyre particulate pollution is
Tyre abrasion is the material removed when a tyre contacts the road. The wear produces rubber debris and fine particles that can become airborne or remain on road surfaces before moving into soil and water. UNECE describes the mechanism this way: “Tyre abrasion is produced when there is friction with the road surface, for example when vehicles turn, accelerate or brake.” That wording comes from its 8 February 2024 release on tyre-particle measurement and is an institutional statement, not a quotation attributed to an individual.

The European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC) review Contribution of Road Vehicle Tyre Wear to Microplastics and Ambient Air Pollution estimated that tyre abrasion contributes between 5% and 30% of road-transport particulate-matter emissions and about 5% of total ambient particulate-matter emissions. These are review estimates, not a universal value: the result varies with geography, vehicle fleet, roads, weather, traffic and the tyres in use.

Particles are generated by more than the rubber compound alone. Vehicle mass and power delivery, steering and suspension condition, road texture, temperature and moisture, speed, cornering, acceleration and braking all change the forces at the contact patch. A tyre that performs well in one vehicle or route can therefore wear differently in another.
Why “the lowest-abrasion tyre” is not yet a simple shopping category
EU tyre labels currently provide classes for wet grip, rolling resistance and external rolling noise. They do not provide an abrasion or mileage class. The European Commission says abrasion and mileage indicators will be added when suitable test methods are available. A low rolling-resistance class must not be treated as proof of low particulate emissions: the Commission identifies competing properties and possible trade-offs among wear or mileage, grip and rolling resistance.
This means a retailer’s phrase such as “eco tyre” is not, by itself, a standardized abrasion result. A meaningful comparison requires the same type of test, the same units, and enough information about load, route, temperature and test duration to understand what the number represents. If those details are missing, regard the claim as unverified rather than ranking the product.

The label applies to new C1 passenger-car, C2 light-commercial and C3 heavy-vehicle tyres covered by the labelling rules, subject to the exclusions listed in the European Commission’s tyre-label scope information. EPREL, the European Product Registry for Energy Labelling, provides more detailed information for covered tyres. Use the label as one part of a suitability check, not as an abrasion league table.
| Comparison | What it tells you | How to use it | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Approved size and specification | Whether the tyre is suitable for the vehicle’s wheel, load and speed requirements | Match the vehicle placard, handbook and any approved fitment specification before considering environmental attributes | A tyre outside the approved specification is not an acceptable pollution trade-off |
| Wet-grip class | Relative wet-braking performance under the label’s test conditions | Give this priority appropriate to your climate and roads; compare candidates in the same size | It is not an abrasion measurement |
| Rolling-resistance class | Resistance to rolling, associated with energy use | Use it as an efficiency comparison after confirming grip and fitment | Low rolling resistance does not establish low particulate emissions |
| External rolling-noise value | Measured exterior pass-by noise, shown on the label | Use it when roadside noise matters | Noise is not a proxy for abrasion |
| EPREL or manufacturer technical data | Additional product and test information where supplied | Look for a documented abrasion or mileage result with method, units and conditions | Results are useful only when products were tested comparably |
| Marketing wording | A manufacturer or seller’s description | Ask what test supports the claim and whether the result is independently comparable | “Green”, “long-life” or “low-wear” wording alone is not a standardized rating |
A step-by-step way to choose a replacement tyre
1. Establish the vehicle’s non-negotiable requirements
Read the tyre-size and pressure placard, the owner’s handbook and the vehicle’s approved fitment information. Record the complete size, load index, speed rating and any manufacturer-specific requirement. If the vehicle is a van, SUV or other heavy model, pay particular attention to the required load capacity. Do not start with an environmental claim and work backwards to fitment.

2. Build a like-for-like shortlist
Compare tyres in the exact approved size and specification. Mixing sizes, load ratings or construction types makes label results and wear claims difficult to interpret and can create a safety problem. Keep the intended use visible: frequent rain, winter temperatures, high motorway mileage, urban stop-start traffic and heavy loads impose different demands.
3. Read wet grip and rolling resistance separately
Record both classes for every candidate rather than collapsing them into one “best” score. Wet grip addresses a direct safety concern; rolling resistance addresses energy efficiency. A candidate with excellent efficiency but unsuitable wet performance or an unapproved fitment is not a responsible choice. The label’s external-noise value can inform community-noise concerns, but it does not answer the abrasion question.
4. Check EPREL and technical documents
For covered tyres, search EPREL using the product information supplied by the seller or manufacturer. Then inspect the manufacturer’s technical documentation for any abrasion, mileage or wear result. A useful document should identify the test method, distance or cycles, load basis, units, tyre size and conditions. If one brand reports a road test and another reports a laboratory result, do not present their numbers as a direct ranking.
5. Ask for evidence behind an abrasion claim
Ask the retailer or manufacturer four precise questions:
- What test produced the abrasion or mileage number?
- Is the result reported in the same units for the products being compared?
- What load, vehicle, road or drum, distance and weather conditions were used?
- Is the result a certified regulatory measurement, an internal comparison or a marketing estimate?
If the answers are unavailable, document that the claim cannot be compared and base the decision on approved fitment, wet grip, rolling resistance and intended conditions.

6. Make a safety-first decision
Choose the candidate that meets the vehicle requirements and provides suitable wet grip and handling for your use. Treat a credible, like-for-like abrasion result as a tie-breaker or additional factor, not as permission to accept an unsuitable tyre. The European Commission specifically warns that tyre properties can compete with one another, so a single low number cannot represent overall environmental or safety performance.

7. Confirm the fitted set and aftercare
Have the tyres fitted in the approved configuration and set to the vehicle maker’s pressure for the actual load. Ask the installer to check for obvious alignment or suspension problems that could create uneven wear. Recheck pressures when the tyres are cold and respond to abnormal wear rather than waiting for a failure. These measures do not create a standardized abrasion score, but they help avoid avoidable material loss.
How driving and vehicle condition affect abrasion
The JRC identifies the vehicle, road characteristics, environmental conditions and driving style as significant influences. You can reduce unnecessary contact forces with a few practical habits:
- Accelerate and brake progressively. Wheel slip and hard braking increase frictional work at the road surface.
- Take corners smoothly. High lateral forces during fast or abrupt turns increase scrub.
- Use the correct pressure. Under- or over-inflation changes the contact patch and heat pattern; use the vehicle maker’s specification rather than a tyre’s maximum sidewall pressure.
- Keep loads within the vehicle rating. Additional mass increases the force each tyre must transmit.
- Investigate uneven wear. Misalignment, worn suspension or an imbalance can remove material from one area of the tread much faster than normal use.
- Match the tyre to the route and season. Temperature, moisture and road texture affect both grip and wear, so a tyre optimized for one environment may not be optimal in another.
These actions should not be described as a quantified percentage reduction: the available evidence does not provide a universal saving for an individual driver.
How abrasion testing and regulation are developing
UNECE working parties endorsed two proposed measurement methods in February 2024. One uses an open-road vehicle convoy over 8,000 km; the other uses a laboratory rolling drum over 5,000 km. The proposed result is expressed as tyre weight loss in milligrams per kilometre per tonne of tyre load. Using both road and laboratory approaches is intended to make results more repeatable while reflecting real vehicle use.

On 17 March 2026, UNECE reported that relevant working parties had endorsed proposed abrasion limits for new car and van tyres and planned to submit them to the World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations (WP.29) in June 2026. UNECE’s task-force estimates suggested that the proposals could reduce overall tyre abrasion by more than 10% and potentially exclude around 30% of high-abrasion tyres sold in European and Japanese markets. Both figures are modeled or estimated potential outcomes, not measured reductions already delivered in the market.
The WP.29 199th-session document list identifies ECE/TRANS/WP.29/2026/138 as a proposal for a new tyre-abrasion regulation. The available material does not verify whether WP.29 adopted that proposal or establish final implementation dates. Therefore, do not tell a buyer that the proposed limits are already legally in force. Regulation is developing, and consumer-facing classes will depend on final adoption, testing and labeling decisions.

| Your situation | Priority order | How to handle abrasion information |
|---|---|---|
| Rainy climate or frequent wet roads | Approved fitment, wet grip, then efficiency and other data | Reject any option that weakens wet-weather suitability merely because a wear claim sounds attractive |
| High annual motorway mileage | Approved fitment, wet grip at sustained speeds, rolling resistance and documented mileage | Compare mileage only when the test method and conditions are comparable |
| Urban stop-start driving | Approved fitment, wet grip, predictable handling and pressure maintenance | Expect driving style and repeated acceleration and braking to influence wear; an unverified “low-pollution” label proves little |
| Electric or especially heavy vehicle | Correct load and speed approval, wet grip and vehicle-specific fitment | Do not assume a tyre marketed for efficiency has low abrasion without a documented test |
| Light-commercial or heavily loaded use | Correct C2 or C3 specification and load capacity, wet grip and durability evidence | Ask for data generated at a load representative of the vehicle’s work; passenger-car figures are not interchangeable |
Pitfalls that lead to bad comparisons
Assuming rolling resistance equals low wear
Rolling resistance measures energy lost as a tyre rolls. Abrasion measures material removed through contact. They are related to tyre design but are not the same property. Use the rolling-resistance class for efficiency and require separate evidence for wear.
Treating mileage as a pollution score
A tyre that lasts longer may reduce the number of replacements, but mileage alone does not describe the mass or particle-size distribution of material released during use. Ask for the actual abrasion result and its method instead of inferring pollution from a durability slogan.

Ignoring vehicle and route effects
A published result is not a promise for every vehicle. Mass, torque, alignment, road surface, climate and driving behavior can move real-world wear away from the laboratory or reference vehicle result.
Choosing a tyre that is not approved for the vehicle
Environmental intent cannot override load, speed, size or other approved-fitment requirements. An incorrect tyre can compromise handling and may invalidate the comparison entirely.
Assuming proposed UNECE limits are already mandatory
The March 2026 announcement concerned proposed limits and a planned WP.29 submission. Until adoption and implementation details are confirmed, use the current label and manufacturer documentation rather than claiming legal compliance with a future rule.

Bottom line: choose the safest approved fitment first, use wet grip and rolling resistance as separate EU-label comparisons, and treat abrasion data as useful only when its method is documented and comparable. Until standardized abrasion classes and final regulations arrive, careful maintenance and smooth, appropriately loaded driving are as important as the tyre model itself.
