If you mean the wide image at the top of a YouTube channel, create a 2560 × 1440 pixel banner (16:9). YouTube accepts banners down to 2048 × 1152 pixels; at that minimum canvas, keep essential text and logos inside the 1235 × 338 pixel safe area. Keep the exported banner at or below 6 MB. YouTube crops the same banner differently on computers, phones, and TVs.
The phrase “channel thumbnail” is ambiguous. YouTube calls the wide channel image a banner image. A profile picture and an individual video thumbnail are separate assets with different dimensions, so choose the specification that matches what you are designing.
First, identify which YouTube image you need
“YouTube channel thumbnail size” commonly refers to channel artwork, but YouTube’s own terminology separates three jobs:
- Channel banner: the large image across the top of your channel page. It communicates the channel’s overall identity.
- Profile picture: the small square or circular avatar beside your channel name, comments, and videos.
- Video thumbnail: the preview image for one video. Shorts and podcast playlists have their own guidance.

Use a 2560 × 1440 px canvas
YouTube recommends 2560 × 1440 pixels, a 16:9 canvas. This gives you enough resolution for large displays while allowing YouTube to create device-specific crops from one source image.
Minimum upload dimensions
The minimum banner upload is 2048 × 1152 pixels (also 16:9). The minimum is an acceptance threshold, not the best working size. Starting at 2560 × 1440 gives you more room for sharp text, background detail, and later edits.
Keep critical content in the safe area
At the minimum banner dimensions, YouTube specifies a 1235 × 338 pixel safe area for text and logos. Because the banner is cropped differently on computers, mobile devices, and TVs, keep your channel name, logo, slogan, upload schedule, and other must-see information centered in that shared area even when your background fills the entire 2560 × 1440 canvas.
File-size limit
The cited YouTube branding guidance sets a maximum banner file size of 6 MB. If your export is larger, reduce JPEG quality or resize only if necessary; do not shrink below 2048 × 1152.
YouTube’s extracted banner guidance specifies dimensions and the size limit but does not prescribe one banner file format. Follow the export formats offered by your editor and the current upload dialog rather than transferring profile-picture format rules to banners.
Banner layout that survives every device crop
- Create the document: Start at 2560 × 1440 px, 16:9.
- Mark the center: Add guides for the 1235 × 338 px safe area. If you are designing at the recommended canvas instead of the minimum, scale that guide proportionally and keep a generous central margin.
- Place identity first: Put the channel name, logo, and any information viewers must read inside the guides.
- Extend decoration outward: Use the remaining canvas for color, photography, patterns, or nonessential artwork. Assume the outer edges may disappear on a smaller screen.
- Check legibility: View the design at a small zoom and on a narrow mockup. Thin type and low-contrast text are especially vulnerable to cropping and compression.
- Export and check the file: Confirm the pixel dimensions and that the file is no larger than 6 MB before uploading.
YouTube describes the banner as a larger space to show what your channel is about. Treat it as channel-wide branding, not as a single-video click-through image.

These are not interchangeable “thumbnail sizes.” Their purposes, aspect ratios, safe areas, and upload constraints are different.
Choosing the right video thumbnail size
For a standard long-form video, YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels with a 16:9 composition and a minimum width of 640 pixels. This is the image viewers see before opening that particular video, not the banner at the top of your channel.
For a Short, use the vertical guidance: 2160 × 3840 pixels recommended, 9:16 suggested, and a minimum height of 640 pixels. Design important subjects away from extreme top and bottom edges because interface elements can cover them. YouTube may display an automatically generated 4:5 image instead of a 16:9 custom thumbnail on Home, Explore, and subscription pages.

Choosing a profile picture
The profile image is a separate identity asset. YouTube’s branding instructions say it renders at 98 × 98 pixels and recommend a square or round design. The listed upload formats are JPG, GIF, BMP, and PNG; animated GIFs are not allowed, and the maximum file size is 15 MB. Use a simple mark or face with strong contrast, since the displayed image is much smaller than a banner.
Upload and quality checklist
- Confirm you are editing a channel banner rather than a video thumbnail or profile picture.
- Set the banner canvas to 2560 × 1440 px and 16:9.
- Keep all essential text and logos inside the central safe area; at minimum dimensions that area is 1235 × 338 px.
- Preview the artwork at desktop, mobile, and TV-like crops.
- Check that the exported banner is no larger than 6 MB.
- For video thumbnails, verify whether you are making a standard 16:9 thumbnail or a vertical Shorts image.
- Recheck YouTube’s current upload dialog if your account, country, device, or channel history produces a different limit. YouTube notes that some custom-thumbnail limits and eligibility can vary.
Troubleshooting common problems
“My banner looks cut off”
The image is being cropped for the viewer’s device. Move essential content toward the center and keep decoration at the edges. Re-export at 2560 × 1440 rather than stretching a smaller file.
“YouTube rejects the banner for size”
Check both dimensions and file weight. The image must be at least 2048 × 1152 and no larger than 6 MB under the cited branding guidance. Compress the export without reducing the canvas below the minimum.

“The text is unreadable on phones”
Use fewer words, larger type, stronger contrast, and the central safe area. A design that is legible only at full desktop width is not suitable for a multi-device banner.
“I used the video-thumbnail template for my channel”
Start over with the banner specification. Standard video thumbnails use 3840 × 2160 px guidance; banners use 2560 × 1440 px recommended and have a central safe area.
“My Shorts thumbnail does not appear everywhere”
