Choose a desktop USB-C charger by matching its output to your device’s own charging requirements—not by buying the highest wattage you can find. Check that the device accepts charging over USB-C, whether it requires USB Power Delivery (USB PD), the output available on the specific port you’ll use, and the cable’s rating. If other devices will be connected at the same time, check the charger’s port-by-port power allocation for that combination.

Start with the device’s charging requirements

Find the exact model’s charging instructions or specifications. Record the required voltage, current and wattage, and note whether the manufacturer calls for USB PD or a particular PD mode. Also check that the USB-C port supports charging: a device’s original adapter rating does not prove that its USB-C port accepts the same power.

For a laptop, use the manufacturer’s recommended adapter or stated full-use input as your target. A lower-output USB-C charger might work only while the computer is asleep or powered off, charge slowly, or fail to power it during use. Microsoft lists insufficient charger output, incompatibility and a port that does not support charging among possible reasons Windows may display a slow-charging notice: Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guidance.

Requirements are model-specific, not universal laptop thresholds. For example, Lenovo’s instructions for the ThinkBook 16p Gen 4 say a USB-C source should provide at least 20 V and 2.25 A to provide power, and distinguish charging behavior when the computer is asleep or off from charging more fully. Apply that guidance only to that model; check your own device’s instructions: Lenovo’s ThinkBook 16p Gen 4 guidance.

Check USB PD and the output of the port you’ll use

USB-C describes a connector, not a guaranteed charging standard or power level. Microsoft notes that a USB-C system may support 5 V at 3 A (15 W), while USB PD support is optional. A USB-C charger is therefore not automatically a USB PD charger, and a USB-C port is not automatically capable of accepting the power your device needs. See Microsoft’s USB-C system guidance.

If your device requires USB PD, choose a charger that explicitly lists USB PD and has an output profile that covers the device’s requirement on the port you intend to use. PD sources and devices negotiate power: a source starts in 5 V mode and negotiates a suitable charging mode with the connected device. USB-IF says devices can take the power they require; the charger’s maximum is not something the device must draw. See USB-IF’s USB Power Delivery overview and STMicroelectronics’ USB Type-C and PD application note.

USB PD’s standards ceiling is not a buying recommendation. USB-IF says PD can support up to 240 W, with fixed voltages of 28 V, 36 V and 48 V for levels up to 140 W, 180 W and 240 W; devices may request an intermediate voltage within the available range. Those capabilities do not mean a typical laptop needs a 240 W charger. USB-IF announced the 240 W capability with PD Revision 3.1 in 2021: USB-IF’s overview.

The USB-IF document library lists USB Power Delivery Specification Revision 3.2 Version 1.2, dated September 14, 2026. Standards evolve, so check current device and charger documentation for supported modes rather than relying on a connector shape or a PD version label alone: USB-IF document library.

Check multiport power sharing before connecting several devices

A desktop charger’s headline wattage may describe its total capacity, not what one port can deliver while other ports are occupied. Before buying, consult the manufacturer’s output or port-allocation table and find the entry for the exact combination of connected devices you expect to use. Confirm that the laptop’s port still supplies its required voltage and wattage under that load. USB PD supports power management across peripherals, but the split depends on the charger model; it cannot be inferred from the total rating alone.

Match the cable to the output

Check the cable’s rated current and voltage as well as the charger’s output. STMicroelectronics says a specific cable is required to deliver more than 3 A or more than 20 V. A charger with a suitable port cannot deliver the intended higher output through a cable that does not meet the requirement. Consult the charger and cable specifications together: STMicroelectronics’ USB Type-C and PD application note.

Use a charger approved for your location

Choose a product with safety approval or certification appropriate to the country where it will operate. Applicable requirements and marks vary by jurisdiction; do not assume one region’s marking establishes approval elsewhere. A quick selection checklist

  1. Identify the device’s input. Find its exact USB-C charging requirements, whether its port supports charging, and whether USB PD or a specific mode is required.
  2. Set the target. For a laptop, use its maker’s full-use input or recommended adapter guidance—not a generic wattage rule.
  3. Verify the charger port. Confirm that the specific USB-C port lists the needed PD output and voltage.
  4. Account for other connections. Check the charger’s port-allocation table for the devices you’ll use simultaneously.
  5. Verify the cable. Make sure its current and voltage ratings match the selected output.
  6. Check local safety approval. Confirm that the charger’s approval or certification is appropriate for where you’ll use it.
