Start with the garment care label, then check your washer’s manual. Use the AI cycle when its stated load, detergent and setting requirements match what you are washing. Choose a named program when the label, soil level or special handling calls for one. “AI Wash” is not a universal standard: its sensors and adjustments differ by brand and model.

The short decision rule

An AI cycle is a convenience, not a substitute for the care label. Before pressing Start, work through this order:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Read every garment’s care label. Treat the instructions on the item as the first limit on cycle choice.
  2. Open the exact washer manual. Confirm what the machine’s AI mode detects, which loads it accepts, whether it requires automatic detergent dispensing and which options can disable it.
  3. Check the load against those conditions. Weight, fabric characteristics, soil and available settings may all matter, depending on the model.
  4. Use AI when the load fits. It can make the machine choose adjustments for you within the feature’s designed limits.
  5. Choose a named program when a requirement is explicit. A dedicated cycle is the safer choice when the label or the task needs handling that AI may not provide.

Do not assume AI will always clean better, protect fabric better or use less water and energy than a suitable manual cycle. The manufacturer descriptions reviewed here explain intended operation, not universal performance results.

What “AI” means on a washer

The word AI identifies a collection of model-specific sensing and control features. It does not describe one cross-brand program with identical inputs or results. Two manufacturers can use the same label while making different decisions from different measurements.

LG AI Wash

LG USA describes AI Wash as a dedicated cycle that classifies fabric material and varies motor speed according to fabric characteristics. The stated aim is to use a suitable wash motion for the detected material. LG’s general support guide says the cycle is designed to work with an adequate wash motion when the laundry weighs 5 kg or less. It also warns that AI Wash may not operate if the water-level option is changed. That is an operating condition in LG’s general guide, not a rule for every AI washer.

LG also cautions that its general guidance may differ from the instructions for a particular product. The model manual therefore takes precedence over the general support page.

Samsung AI features

Samsung UK describes AI Wash as adjusting detergent quantity and the cycle according to the load and the severity of soil. Its guidance says the feature is best used with Auto Dispense. Whether those controls exist, and how they behave, depends on the washer.

Samsung US describes a different feature, AI OptiWash & Dry, on its Bespoke AI Laundry Combo. That system detects clothing type, weight and soil level before selecting a cycle. Samsung’s US cycle guide notes that the feature is available only on that model and that not every washer has every listed cycle.

Why the model number matters

A cycle name on a control panel is not enough to tell you what the machine will sense or change. Availability, wash time, temperature, load limits and compatible options can vary by exact model. Even within one brand, a top-loading washer, front-loading washer and washer-dryer combination may present different AI functions.

Feature description What the manufacturer says it uses or changes Important qualification
LG AI Wash Classifies fabric material and varies motor speed for a suitable wash motion LG’s general guide specifies laundry of 5 kg or less for adequate motion and says changing water level may prevent AI Wash from operating
Samsung UK AI Wash Adjusts detergent amount and the cycle using load and soil severity Samsung recommends Auto Dispense; cycle availability and behavior depend on the exact model
Samsung US AI OptiWash & Dry Detects clothing type, weight and soil level before selecting a cycle Samsung identifies this feature as available only on the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo; not every washer has every listed program

Step 1: Treat the care label as the first constraint

Separate the garments you are about to wash and read their labels before considering the machine’s suggestions. The label tells you what the item’s maker permits or requires. If the label calls for a particular kind of treatment, do not select an AI setting merely because it is convenient.

The manufacturer material used for this guide does not provide a complete reference for care-label symbols, temperatures or fabric categories. Use the instructions printed on the garment and any explanation supplied by the garment maker rather than applying a universal rule from memory.

When a load contains items with different instructions, the most restrictive instruction determines whether the load belongs together. If the combination cannot be reconciled with one program, split the load and choose separately.

Step 2: Read the washer’s own AI instructions

Find the model number and consult its manual or support page. Look specifically for the following details:

  • What the AI mode is called on your machine.
  • Whether it senses fabric, clothing type, weight, soil, or more than one of these.
  • The supported load size or any weight threshold.
  • Whether Auto Dispense or another detergent setting is required or recommended.
  • Which options, such as a manual water-level selection, disable the AI behavior.
  • Which cycle times and temperatures can change as the load is weighed or assessed.
  • Whether the feature is available for washing only, drying only, or a combined wash-and-dry program.

Do not transfer a limitation from one brand to another. For example, the 5 kg condition and water-level warning belong to LG’s general AI Wash guidance; they should not be assumed for a Samsung or another manufacturer’s machine.

Step 3: Decide whether the load fits AI mode

Once you know what your model’s AI function expects, compare those requirements with the actual load. Ask these questions before starting:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Are all items allowed by their care labels in the same type of wash?
  • Is the load within the model’s stated capacity or AI-specific limit?
  • Does the washer expect a particular detergent-dispensing mode?
  • Have you selected an option that the manual says will override or disable AI?
  • Does the load need a clearly defined program that the AI mode may not select?

If the answer to the last question is yes, use the named program. If the load meets the conditions and no label requires special handling, AI is a reasonable convenience setting.

When AI is a sensible choice

Routine loads that meet the manual’s conditions

AI is most useful when you want the washer to make permitted adjustments for an ordinary load and the load falls within the feature’s documented limits. The machine can then use the inputs its manufacturer specifies—such as material, weight or soil—to select or adjust operation.

Loads where soil varies

On Samsung’s described AI Wash implementation, soil severity is one of the inputs used to adjust detergent quantity and the cycle. That can be useful when the machine’s manual supports the load and Auto Dispense is configured as instructed. It does not establish that every AI washer evaluates soil in the same way.

When you prefer fewer manual decisions

An AI cycle can reduce the number of choices you make at the panel. You still need to sort the load, follow labels and avoid options that disable the feature. AI automates decisions inside the machine’s programmed boundaries; it does not remove the need to verify those boundaries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a named cycle is the better choice

The care label requires a particular treatment

Select the program that your washer manual identifies as compatible with the garment’s instructions when the label calls for specific handling. Do not rely on an AI setting to infer a requirement that the manufacturer does not say it can detect.

You need a defined task

A dedicated program is appropriate when you deliberately need a task such as a deep wash or a quick dry, provided your model offers that program and the load’s labels permit it. These examples come from the kind of question users ask about choosing between AI and a named cycle; they are not universal recommendations for every washer.

You need predictable manual settings

If your manual documents a named program with the combination of controls you need, choose that program rather than trying to force AI to reproduce it. The exact temperature, time and motion are model-specific, so verify them on the control panel or in the manual.

The AI feature has a restriction you cannot meet

Use another supported cycle if the load exceeds an AI-specific limit, requires a setting that disables AI, or cannot use the detergent-dispensing arrangement the feature expects. For LG’s general guidance, changing the water-level option can prevent AI Wash from operating; the manual for your own washer determines whether a similar restriction applies.

AI versus Normal versus a dedicated program

“Normal” is not automatically safer than AI, and AI is not automatically better than Normal. Compare what each program is documented to do for your model rather than comparing the labels alone.

Question AI cycle Normal cycle Dedicated cycle
What determines operation? Model-specific sensed inputs, such as material, clothing type, weight or soil The fixed behavior documented for the machine’s Normal program The task or garment category named by the manufacturer
Who chooses the adjustments? The washer, within its programmed limits You select the program’s available options You select the program intended for the stated task
When is it appropriate? When labels and the AI manual’s conditions fit the load When the manual identifies Normal as suitable for the load and you want its defined behavior When the label or task requires handling that should be explicit
What must you verify? Inputs, load limit, detergent mode and settings that disable AI Permitted load, options and the program’s documented behavior That the named program exists on your model and matches the labels

The available manufacturer guidance does not provide a universal result comparison for these choices. It does not establish that one option always removes more soil, causes less wear, or consumes fewer resources.

A practical start-to-finish procedure

  1. Gather one compatible load. Separate items whose labels cannot be satisfied by the same wash.
  2. Check the model manual. Confirm the AI feature’s name, supported load, sensed inputs and required settings.
  3. Inspect the panel before changing options. Note whether Auto Dispense is recommended and whether a water-level or other manual control would turn AI off.
  4. Choose AI only if the conditions match. Let the machine make its documented adjustments without overriding them.
  5. Choose a named program instead when needed. Use the manual’s program for a defined task or a label requirement that AI is not documented to handle.
  6. Review the displayed settings. Wash time and temperature can vary with load weight on some models; confirm the display is acceptable for the labels before starting.
  7. Record a useful model-specific lesson. If the manual shows that a setting disables AI or changes detergent behavior, keep that information with your household laundry notes rather than applying it to another washer.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Assuming every AI cycle works the same way

Symptom: You expect one brand’s AI behavior to match another’s. Correction: Use the exact model manual. LG describes material classification and motor-speed changes, while Samsung describes load, soil and detergent adjustments in its own implementations.

Changing a control without checking its effect

Symptom: You manually change water level or another option and assume AI is still active. Correction: Check the manual’s compatibility notes. LG’s general guide specifically warns that changing water level may prevent AI Wash from operating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using AI as proof of better cleaning

Symptom: You choose AI because the label sounds more advanced. Correction: Treat AI as an automatic-selection feature. The cited guides describe intended sensing and adjustment, not a universal cleaning, fabric-care or efficiency advantage.

Ignoring detergent-dispenser requirements

Symptom: The machine’s AI mode is selected, but detergent dispensing does not match the instructions. Correction: On Samsung models whose guidance recommends Auto Dispense for AI Wash, configure and verify that function as directed in the manual.

Assuming a cycle exists because another washer has it

Symptom: You search for a named program that is absent or behaves differently. Correction: Cycle availability is model-dependent. Samsung’s US guide explicitly cautions that not every washer has every listed cycle.

How to handle uncertain cases

The label and the AI suggestion seem to conflict

Follow the garment label and consult the washer manual before starting. If the manual does not clearly confirm that AI supports the label’s requirement, select a documented compatible program or separate the item. Do not infer capability from the word AI.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The load is near the machine’s limit

Use the limit stated for your model and feature, not a limit remembered from another washer. If the manual gives an AI-specific threshold, stay within it. LG’s 5 kg condition is one example of a feature-specific limit; it is not a general limit for AI washing machines.

The cycle time changes after loading

Some Samsung guidance says wash times and temperatures vary with load weight. A changing estimate is therefore not, by itself, evidence of a fault. Check the displayed settings against the labels and consult the manual if the machine reports an error or selects an unavailable option.

Questions to ask before pressing Start

  • Have I read every label in this load?
  • What does AI sense on this exact model?
  • Is this load within the AI feature’s stated weight or capacity limit?
  • Does the feature require Auto Dispense or another setting?
  • Will my selected water level or other option disable AI?
  • Would a named program better match the task or the garment instructions?

What the evidence does—and does not—support

LG USA’s support guidance, published June 4, 2026, describes AI Wash as a material-aware motion choice and gives the 5 kg-or-less operating condition in its general guide. Samsung UK’s support guidance, updated July 6, 2026, describes AI Wash adjustments based on load and soil and recommends Auto Dispense. Samsung US identifies AI OptiWash & Dry as a feature of the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo and lists clothing type, weight and soil as detection inputs.

Those descriptions explain intended operation for named products. They do not establish a cross-brand standard or prove that AI universally outperforms a correctly selected manual program. Your model’s manual and the garments’ labels remain the controlling references.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

Use AI when the load’s labels fit the exact feature conditions in your washer’s manual and you want the machine to make its documented adjustments. Select Normal or another named cycle when you need a defined program, a special task or a requirement that AI is not documented to handle. The safest choice is determined by the garment label and model manual—not by the word “AI” on the dial.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the AI cycle always the best setting for everyday laundry?

No. It is a reasonable convenience only when the load and settings meet that model’s documented conditions. A suitable Normal or dedicated cycle may be more appropriate for a defined task or care-label requirement.

Can I change the water level while using LG AI Wash?

LG’s general support guide says changing the water-level option may prevent AI Wash from operating. Check the manual for your exact LG model before changing it.

Does every AI washer detect fabric type?

No. LG describes material classification, while Samsung describes load, soil, detergent adjustments, or clothing-type detection on particular models. Inputs vary by product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need Auto Dispense for AI Wash?

Samsung UK says AI Wash is best used with Auto Dispense on the models covered by its guidance. Verify the requirement for your exact washer.

Will AI always use less water or energy?

The cited manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal water- or energy-saving advantage over a suitable manual cycle.

Why can the time or temperature change after I load the washer?

Samsung’s guidance says wash times and temperatures can vary with load weight on some models. Confirm that the displayed settings remain compatible with the garment labels.
