The right version of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time depends first on the Nintendo hardware you already own, then on whether you want the original Nintendo 64 presentation or the enhanced 3DS edition. Choose Ocarina of Time 3D if you have a compatible Nintendo 3DS-family system and want sharper graphics, glasses-free 3D, touch inventory controls and gyro aiming. Choose the Nintendo 64 version in the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack classic-games collection if you want the original game on a current Switch-family console. A separate Switch 2 version has been announced for 2026, but Nintendo has not yet provided enough information to treat it as a current purchase option.

There is no universally best edition. The meaningful choices are hardware compatibility, original versus enhanced presentation, subscription access versus ownership, and whether waiting for Switch 2 suits you.

Ocarina of Time on Nintendo 3DS
Ocarina of Time 3D is a distinct remake-style handheld release rather than a simple emulation of the N64 cartridge. Nintendo describes a graphical overhaul and glasses-free 3D visuals on compatible hardware. The original’s analog movement is mapped to the 3DS Circle Pad, while the lower touch screen provides an inventory interface intended to reduce menu interruptions. First-person aiming can use the system’s gyroscope, allowing you to move the handheld instead of relying only on the stick.

These changes matter most if you value portable play and convenience during combat, item selection and aiming. They also mean that this is not the choice for someone specifically seeking the N64-era display, controller feel and presentation. The edition is tied to Nintendo 3DS-family hardware; it is not the version supplied by the Switch classic-games application.
The Nintendo 64 version on Switch
On Nintendo Switch and other Switch-family consoles, Nintendo provides the original N64 game through its Nintendo 64 Classics collection. Access is included with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, not with the basic Nintendo Switch Online tier. Nintendo’s service documentation says classic games require an active Nintendo Account membership.
This route is best when you want the historical N64 version on a modern television or handheld Switch display and do not want to locate 3DS hardware or a physical cartridge. It is service access rather than a standalone purchase: if the membership lapses, the classic software cannot be launched through the service, although Nintendo says saves remain on the console.

The announced Switch 2 version
In an announcement dated 12 June 2026, Nintendo said: The Nintendo 64 classic returns for a new generation in 2026, reborn exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2!
That confirms a future Switch 2 release, but not its launch day or product format. The announcement does not establish whether it will be an emulated N64 version, a remaster, a remake, a subscription title, a separate purchase or something else.

Do not describe this edition as playable today, and do not assume that it includes the 3DS enhancements. If you are deciding whether to play now, base the decision on the documented 3DS and Switch options instead of an unannounced feature set.

The N64 Controller is optional based on the available Nintendo information. Nintendo lists it as compatible with Switch 2 for compatible games, but the cited material does not say that it is required for Ocarina of Time, nor does it confirm present stock or pricing.
Choose according to the hardware you already have
If you own a Nintendo 3DS-family system
Start with Ocarina of Time 3D if your priority is the enhanced handheld experience. A physical copy is the practical route for someone who did not buy the game before the 3DS eShop purchase shutdown. Nintendo says previously purchased 3DS content can still be redownloaded and existing updates can still be downloaded for the foreseeable future, but that is different from being able to buy a new digital license today.
Check that your system is a Nintendo 3DS-family model and that you are comfortable using a small dual-screen handheld. The edition’s touch inventory and gyro aiming are useful only if you enjoy those controls; they are not reasons to choose it when your main goal is an untouched N64 presentation.

If you own a Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite or Switch OLED
The Nintendo 64 Classics collection is the documented way to play the original game on a Switch-family system. You need an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership on the Nintendo Account that will launch the classic-games application. Once subscribed, install or open the Nintendo 64 Classics software from the Switch eShop, select Ocarina of Time, and use the controls supported by your console.
Because access is tied to the membership, this option suits players who already subscribe or who accept recurring service access. It is less suitable if you want a game that remains launchable after cancelling the service.
If you own a Wii U
Do not treat Wii U as a fresh digital purchase route. Nintendo closed new Wii U and 3DS eShop purchases in March 2023. Existing owners can still redownload previously purchased software and download existing updates for the foreseeable future, but the cited Nintendo information does not establish a currently purchasable Wii U copy of Ocarina of Time.

Decide whether you want the 3DS presentation or the original N64 version before buying hardware. A compatible 3DS-family system plus a physical Ocarina of Time 3D copy gives you the enhanced edition without relying on an ongoing subscription. A current Switch-family console gives you the original version through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. If neither choice appeals and you are comfortable waiting, monitor Nintendo’s official Switch 2 announcements rather than buying on assumptions about the 2026 edition.

Understand the subscription and offline rules on Switch
The Switch route is not a one-time purchase of the N64 game. Nintendo says classic games in the Nintendo 64 collection are accessible only through an active Nintendo Account membership in Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Verify the membership on the account that owns the subscription, particularly if several profiles use the same console.
Nintendo’s support FAQ says classic games can be played offline for up to seven consecutive days before the console must verify the membership online again. Plan accordingly if you are travelling or using a console that will remain offline for longer than a week. The seven-day allowance is an offline interval, not a promise that the service remains available indefinitely without a subscription.
If the membership expires, Nintendo says your saves remain on the console. That preserves your progress but does not preserve launch access through the classic-games service. Renewing the required membership restores the relevant service access under Nintendo’s stated terms.

Make the choice step by step
- List the systems you can use today. Separate Nintendo 3DS-family hardware from Switch-family hardware. Do not count a Wii U as a new eShop purchasing option.
- Choose the presentation you want. Select 3DS if you want the graphical overhaul, glasses-free 3D, touch inventory and gyro aiming. Select the Switch collection if preserving the original N64 presentation matters more.
- Choose ownership or service access. A physical 3DS copy can be kept as a game copy for compatible hardware. The Switch N64 route requires an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership.
- Check whether portability or television play matters. The 3DS edition is built around a dual-screen handheld. The Switch edition can be used in the normal Switch handheld modes or on a television, depending on your console.
- Decide how much waiting is acceptable. Nintendo’s Switch 2 announcement confirms a 2026 return but gives no precise date or product details. Choose an existing version if you want a defined experience now.
- Buy only after verifying the exact edition. A listing that says “Ocarina of Time” may refer to a 3DS physical game, a Switch subscription application or a future Switch 2 product. Confirm the platform and access model before paying.
Practical scenarios
You want the best handheld presentation
Choose Ocarina of Time 3D on a compatible 3DS-family system. Its touch inventory reduces repeated menu navigation, and gyro aiming can make first-person items easier to use for players who like motion controls. The graphical overhaul and optional glasses-free 3D are the defining reasons to choose this edition over the N64 release.

You want the original game on a modern console tonight
Choose the Nintendo 64 Classics collection on Switch with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. This is the clearest documented current route when you already own a Switch and accept subscription-based access. You do not need to wait for the Switch 2 announcement to play the original version.
You dislike subscriptions
The Switch collection may not fit your ownership preference because access depends on an active membership. Look for a physical 3DS copy if you own compatible hardware and want the enhanced edition in a form that is not dependent on a recurring classic-games subscription. Nintendo’s closed eShop means a new digital 3DS purchase is not the alternative.
You want to preserve the exact N64-era experience
Use the Nintendo 64 version in the Switch collection rather than the 3DS edition. The 3DS release changes graphics and interface design, while the Switch collection is described as the N64 classic. A compatible Nintendo 64 Controller may improve familiarity, but the available information does not establish it as mandatory.
You are considering waiting for Switch 2
Wait only if you are comfortable with an unknown release date and unknown feature set. Nintendo has announced exclusivity to Switch 2 and a 2026 return, but has not specified whether the game will be sold separately, included with a service, remade, remastered or presented as emulation. Treat every other detail as unconfirmed until Nintendo publishes it.
Legacy-system limitations to keep in mind
Nintendo ended online play and other functionality using online communication for Wii U and 3DS software on 8 April 2024. That change is unlikely to affect the single-player campaign decision, but it matters if you are describing online features of older Nintendo software generally. The eShop purchase shutdown and the online-communication shutdown are separate events: the first affects buying new digital software, while the second affects online functions.
For 3DS owners, the practical distinction is important. Previously purchased content and existing updates remain available for redownload for the foreseeable future according to Nintendo, but someone without an existing license should not expect to create a new 3DS eShop purchase today. For Wii U, the available Nintendo information likewise supports redownloads for existing owners, not a new purchase recommendation.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming the Switch version is a permanent purchase: It is accessed through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack and requires an active membership.
- Calling the Switch 2 edition available now: Nintendo announced a 2026 release, but no exact date or detailed product information was supplied.
- Assuming Switch 2 will include the 3DS improvements: Nintendo has not stated its gameplay scope or visual treatment.
- Buying a 3DS digital copy from an old listing: New 3DS eShop purchases ended in March 2023; verify that a listing is for a legitimate physical copy or an existing license.
- Treating the N64 Controller as required: The available information identifies it as compatible with Switch 2 for compatible games, not as a required accessory for this title.
