How to Choose the Right USB-C Charger Wattage for Your iPhone

Choose a USB-C charger by your iPhone model and charging method: for wired fast charging, Apple’s general guidance is 20 W or higher for iPhone 12 and later, while iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air have model-specific guidance that calls for 40 W or higher. For MagSafe, the adapter requirements differ. In every case, check that a third-party USB-C charger supports USB Power Delivery (USB-PD).

Wired charger wattage by iPhone model

Apple’s general fast-charge guidance says iPhone 8 or later can fast charge, and notes that iPhone 12 and later need an adapter rated 20 W or higher. That is a useful baseline, not a universal fastest-charge rating for every newer iPhone: Apple gives a higher threshold for several current models.

iPhone model or group Apple’s wired fast-charge guidance What to choose
iPhone 12 and later, except the models listed below 20 W or higher, per Apple’s general note A compatible 20 W-or-higher USB-C PD charger is a practical baseline. See Apple’s fast-charge guidance.
iPhone 17e Up to 50% in 30 minutes with a 20 W adapter or higher Choose at least 20 W USB-C PD. Apple says its iPhone 17e test used pre-production units in January 2026; actual results vary. See Apple’s fast-charge guidance.
iPhone Air Up to 50% in 30 minutes with a 20 W adapter or higher; Apple’s adapter guide separately lists 40 W or higher for fast charging For Apple’s stated fast-charge behavior under its model-specific adapter guidance, choose 40 W or higher. The 20 W figure belongs to Apple’s stated 50%-in-30-minutes example. See Apple’s fast-charge guidance and adapter guide.
iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max 40 W or higher for fast charging; up to 50% in around 20 minutes Choose a compatible 40 W-or-higher USB-C PD charger for Apple’s stated fast-charge behavior. See Apple’s fast-charge guidance and adapter guide.

Apple’s 40 W recommendation is not a requirement to buy Apple-branded hardware. Apple’s adapter guide names its 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max as an example and lists third-party adapter electrical specifications for the models requiring 40 W. Choose a compatible USB-C adapter that supports USB-PD; the brand is up to you.

What to check besides the wattage number

  • USB Power Delivery: Apple says a comparable third-party USB-C power adapter for fast charging should support USB-PD. A wattage rating alone does not establish that a charger supports the protocol Apple specifies. See Apple’s fast-charge guidance.
  • The right cable: iPhone 15 and later use USB-C, so use a USB-C cable. Earlier Lightning models need a USB-C to Lightning cable for Apple’s described fast-charge setup. Apple says the cable included with iPhone 15 and later supports charging; see Apple’s USB-C connector guidance.
  • How many devices you plan to charge: If you also want to power a tablet or laptop, a higher-capacity adapter with suitable ports may be more useful. The iPhone still does not necessarily draw the adapter’s full rated output; the rating describes the adapter’s available capacity, not a constant charging rate for the phone.

MagSafe uses a different adapter rule

Do not apply wired fast-charging wattages directly to wireless charging. Apple’s guidance calls for a MagSafe Charger and a 30 W-or-higher USB-C adapter for fast MagSafe charging with iPhone 16 or later. For iPhone 15 and earlier, Apple says MagSafe can provide up to 15 W with an adapter rated 20 W or higher. These are separate wireless recommendations, not substitutes for the wired model thresholds above. See Apple’s fast-charge guidance.

What Apple’s charging-time examples mean

Apple says iPhone 8 or later can reach up to 50% in around 30 minutes under fast charging. Its newer-model examples differ: up to 50% in 30 minutes for iPhone 17e and iPhone Air with 20 W or higher, and around 20 minutes for iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max with 40 W or higher. These are Apple’s qualified examples, not guaranteed times for every charge. Apple says results vary with the adapter, settings, usage, and environmental conditions, and warns that fast charging may not work when conditions are too cold or too hot. See Apple’s fast-charge guidance.

A quick choice for common situations

  1. For many iPhone 12-and-later models: pick a USB-C PD charger rated 20 W or higher, while checking whether your specific model has a higher threshold.
  2. For iPhone 17, 17 Pro, or 17 Pro Max: choose 40 W or higher with USB-PD if you want Apple’s stated wired fast-charge behavior.
  3. For iPhone Air: Apple gives a 20 W-or-higher figure for its up-to-50%-in-30-minutes example and lists 40 W or higher for fast charging in its adapter guidance. Use 40 W or higher to follow that model-specific fast-charge guidance.
  4. For MagSafe: follow the wireless threshold for your generation: 30 W or higher for iPhone 16 or later, or 20 W or higher for iPhone 15 and earlier.
  5. Before buying: confirm USB-PD support and that you have the cable your iPhone’s connector requires.
