Measure from the viewer’s seated head position to the planned screen plane, use a manufacturer chart or viewing-angle formula as a starting point, then tape the television’s exact outside dimensions on the wall. For height, begin with the screen center at seated eye level or slightly below; move it only when the room’s layout demands it, and verify the result from the main seat before drilling.
Diagonal size alone is not enough. The actual width, height, bezel, stand or frame, soundbar clearance, cable route and VESA mounting position determine whether the installation works. The steps below separate those decisions so an art wall can look intentional without turning everyday viewing into neck strain.

Start with the three measurements that control the decision
Record these measurements before comparing televisions or mounts:
- Viewing distance: measure from where the viewer’s head normally rests on the primary seat to the vertical plane where the screen will sit. Measuring from the sofa’s front edge can understate the distance when people sit well back.
- Available wall footprint: measure the clear width and height, including space needed for a frame, soundbar, shelves, nearby artwork, outlets and cable bends.
- Seated eye height: while sitting in the normal viewing posture, measure from the floor to the viewer’s eyes. If more than one person uses the room, take readings for the main viewers and use a practical midpoint.
These numbers give you a defensible starting point. They do not produce one universal “correct” TV because viewing preference, seating posture, resolution, room architecture and the desired prominence of the screen all change the result.

Choose a screen size from distance, then test the physical footprint
Use a viewing-angle estimate as a first pass
LG USA’s room-size guide suggests estimating screen size by dividing viewing distance in inches by 1.2. The guide presents that relationship as a reference associated with a 40-degree field of view and attributes the cinema-distance concept there to the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE). For example, a 96-inch viewing distance produces an estimate of about 80 inches (96 ÷ 1.2). This is a planning reference, not a safety limit or a promise that every viewer will prefer that size. See the LG USA room-size guide.
LG’s separate size chart uses different assumptions and lists a 65-inch television at approximately 57 inches wide, 32.5 inches high and 8.9 feet from the couch. Those are the figures stated by LG for that chart, not a universal requirement for every 65-inch model or room. Review the LG USA TV measurement guide alongside the chart rather than treating the two methods as one guaranteed optimum.
| Reference | What it provides | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Viewing-distance estimate | Distance in inches divided by 1.2, presented for a 40-degree field of view | Generate an initial diagonal size, then adjust for immersion preference and the room |
| LG 65-inch chart entry | About 57 inches wide, 32.5 inches high and 8.9 feet from the couch | Use as LG’s example for comparison; confirm the exact model’s specifications |
| Your taped outline | The real width and height available on your wall | Make the final visual decision from the main seat and standing positions |
Decide whether you want an immersive or quieter composition
At the same distance, a larger screen occupies more of your field of view and becomes the dominant object among framed pieces. A smaller screen can preserve more negative space and make a gallery wall easier to balance. Neither choice is inherently better. Write down whether the television is intended to be the room’s focal point, a screen that disappears among artwork, or a compromise between those goals.
Viewing habits matter as well. LG’s guidance notes that a closer viewing distance can be more practical with a sharper display. If you sit close for detailed 4K content, a larger screen may feel more natural; if much of the room watches lower-resolution broadcast material from nearby seats, a less aggressive size can be more forgiving. Treat that as a viewing preference and image-quality consideration, not a rigid sizing rule.
Check width and height, not just the diagonal label
Diagonal measurements run from one corner of the active screen to the opposite corner. They do not tell you the outside dimensions of the bezel, frame, stand or rear housing. Philips gives a useful example: a 55-inch screen is about 122 centimetres wide by 68 centimetres high before the frame and stand are included. Exact overall dimensions vary by model, so use the dimensions in the specification sheet for the television you are actually buying. The example appears in the Philips TV size guide, dated 14 August 2026.

Mark the proposed width and height with painter’s tape. Philips specifically recommends taping out the dimensions so you can judge scale in context. Mark the outermost installed footprint, not merely the illuminated panel: include the bezel or decorative frame, and make a second mark for the soundbar if one will sit below it. View the outline from the primary seat, the room entrance and the positions where artwork will be aligned. Move the tape until the composition feels right before ordering hardware.
Set the height from seated comfort, then refine the art composition
Use seated eye level as the reference point
For ordinary sofa viewing, place the middle of the screen at seated eye level or slightly below. LG says the result changes with viewer height and seating, and Sony likewise identifies the center of the screen at eye level as a commonly preferred position. These statements support a range, not one universal measurement from the floor. Read the Sony TV wall-mount FAQ and the LG measurement guide for the manufacturers’ guidance.
Calculate the screen position before calculating the mount position. If your seated eye height is 40 inches and you want the screen center at that height, the center of the television should be approximately 40 inches above the floor. A 32.5-inch-tall television would then extend about 16.25 inches above and below that center, before allowing for any frame or installation offsets. This arithmetic describes the screen’s desired location; it does not tell you where to drill.
Account for the television’s VESA offset
The mounting holes are rarely exactly at the television’s visual center. Measure or obtain the exact distances from the TV’s top and bottom edges to its VESA hole pattern. Then use the mount’s installation template to place the wall plate so that, once the TV is hung, its screen center lands at the height you selected. Do not mark holes from screen-center height alone. The mount plate, hooks, safety locks and the model-specific hole location all affect the final result.
When an art layout pushes the screen higher
A television may need to align with a horizontal row of frames, a fireplace surround or architectural molding. Raising it can improve the wall’s visual rhythm, but it moves the screen away from the normal seated eye line. Tape the complete outline at the proposed higher position and sit in the primary chair for several minutes. Check whether you are tilting your chin upward, whether subtitles remain easy to read and whether reflections increase at that angle.

Samsung’s installation guide describes a broader range in which seated eye level falls between the screen center and the upper third. That can help when a room’s composition requires a modestly higher placement, but it should be treated as a design range rather than a prescription. The guidance is in Samsung’s TV-size guide.
Special seating changes the target
Recliners, deep sofas and bed viewing place the eyes at a different angle from an upright sofa. LG notes that height may differ for reclining or bedroom use and suggests an adjustable mount when the viewing angle needs to change. In those rooms, test the position in the actual reclined posture. A tilt mechanism can aim the screen toward the eyes, but it cannot correct a location that is so high that the neck remains flexed.
Choose a mount only after the TV and wall are identified
Match the exact VESA pattern
VESA is the horizontal and vertical distance between the threaded mounting holes on the back of a television, expressed in millimetres. TCL defines the spacing this way in its wall-mount guide. Find the VESA pattern in the exact model’s specifications, then choose a mount whose supported pattern includes it. A mount that fits the screen size range but not the hole spacing is not compatible.
Verify all of the following against the television and mount manuals:
- Horizontal and vertical VESA spacing.
- Required screw diameter, thread pitch and usable length.
- Maximum supported television weight, including any attached frame or accessories.
- Clearance for cable plugs, power bricks and a soundbar.
- Whether the mount’s locking mechanism can be reached after installation.
TCL warns that screws that are too long can damage internal components. Use only the supplied or explicitly specified fasteners, and use the spacers required by the TV manufacturer. Never substitute a longer screw merely because it appears to engage more threads.

Match the mount style to the room
| Mount type | Movement and clearance | Best fit for an art-focused wall | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed | Holds the TV close to the wall with no tilt or swivel | A carefully measured sofa installation where the screen can remain flat | Least forgiving if the height or glare is wrong; limited cable access |
| Tilt | Allows vertical angle adjustment while remaining relatively close to the wall | A slightly higher composition or a room with controllable glare | Does not move the screen sideways; the tilted top or bottom may change the art alignment |
| Full-motion | Extends, swivels and usually tilts | Corner layouts, multiple seating zones or reclined viewing | Needs more wall and cable slack; the extended arm can make the TV look less like a framed artwork |
These categories and their basic behavior are described by TCL. Select the simplest mount that achieves your planned viewing angle and access requirements. Extra movement adds clearance and adjustment points; it does not eliminate the need to set the original height correctly.
Confirm the wall and hardware
Wall construction determines which fasteners and attachment points are safe. Sony says hardware depends on the building material and recommends professional installation help when needed. Its FAQ also states that the wall should be able to hold four times the TV’s weight. Treat that as Sony’s published guidance for its installations, and check the actual mount and television instructions for your wall type. Do not rely on drywall anchors alone unless the mount manufacturer explicitly rates them for the complete load and movement of your installation.
Locate studs or use the appropriate masonry hardware, keep the wall plate level, and leave enough room to connect cables without forcing them into a sharp bend. A full-motion mount needs stronger, correctly spaced attachment points because extending the arm increases leverage on the wall.
A practical planning and installation sequence
- Measure the viewing position. Record the head-to-screen distance from the primary seat and the seated eye height in the posture used most often.
- Shortlist diagonal sizes. Apply the LG distance-in-inches-divided-by-1.2 estimate as one starting point, then include one size above and below it if the wall allows.
- Collect exact model dimensions. Note overall width and height, bezel or decorative-frame depth, weight, stand dimensions and the VESA pattern. Do not use a generic size-class dimension.
- Tape the outside footprint. Mark the complete TV outline on the wall. Add the planned soundbar, shelves, nearby art and the cable path with separate tape lines.
- Evaluate the composition. Sit in the main seat, check the screen’s visual dominance, and view the wall from normal entry points. Adjust the outline until the art spacing and negative space work.
- Set the screen center. Align the taped screen center with seated eye level or slightly below unless a documented room constraint requires another position. Test any higher art-driven location from the seat.
- Select the mount. Match VESA spacing, screw requirements, weight rating, movement, wall type and cable clearance to the exact TV and wall.
- Transfer the position using the mount template. Measure the TV’s VESA offset and follow the mount instructions to locate the wall plate. Level the template before marking holes.
- Install into suitable structure. Use the hardware specified for studs, masonry or another wall material. If the wall cannot meet the load guidance or you cannot verify the structure, stop and obtain qualified installation help.
- Hang and recheck. Engage every safety lock, connect cables without strain, verify the screen is level and test the viewing angle from the main seat before finalizing nearby artwork.
Make the television read as wall art
Build the composition around the screen’s real edges
Align artwork to the television’s outside frame, not to the smaller active image. A thick bezel or decorative surround can shift the visual center by several centimetres. Keep the soundbar in the same alignment system: either center it on the TV or deliberately align it with a shelf or art row. Marking all objects with tape exposes uneven margins before you commit to holes.

Plan for changing artwork and maintenance
Leave enough clearance to remove the television from its bracket and reach the cables. A mount that places the screen perfectly but traps the power connector behind it can turn a simple device change into a wall-removal job. Full-motion and tilt mounts can improve access, but their movement must not cause the screen or frame to collide with adjacent art.

Consider an art-display television as a category, not a height rule
Samsung describes its The Frame television as having a slim, picture-frame-inspired bezel and an Art Mode that displays artwork when the television is not in use. That type of product can support an art-first wall, but it still needs to be sized for the viewing distance and mounted for comfortable seated viewing. A decorative bezel does not justify placing the screen above the sightline. Confirm current model dimensions, weight, VESA details and software features before purchase.

Troubleshoot the common planning mistakes
The TV looks too large after installation
The diagonal class may have been chosen without checking the actual width, or the viewing distance may have been measured from the sofa edge instead of the seated head position. Re-tape the exact model footprint from the real seat. If the outline still dominates the art, select the next smaller size rather than raising the TV to create visual space; height changes the sightline but not the screen’s width.
The TV feels too high
Check the screen center, not the bottom edge, against seated eye height. A large screen can have a bottom edge that appears high even when its center is comfortable. If the center is above your eye line, revisit the VESA offset and mount-template measurements. A tilt mount can reduce glare or aim the image modestly downward, but it is not a substitute for correcting a substantially high installation.

The mount fits the size range but not the television
Size-range labels are only a rough guide. Compare the exact VESA spacing, maximum weight, screw specification and rear-panel clearance. If any value is missing or outside the mount’s stated range, do not drill. Choose a mount with documented compatibility or obtain confirmation from the television and mount manufacturers.
The wall does not have an obvious stud at the planned location
Stop before enlarging holes. Identify the wall construction and use fasteners rated for it, or have an installer assess the structure. Sony’s four-times-weight guidance and the mount’s own load requirements both need to be satisfied; moving the TV a few inches may be safer than improvising an anchor pattern.
The art row and the screen do not align
Use the television’s outer frame as the anchor and re-tape the adjacent pieces. A small change in screen width, frame thickness or soundbar height can alter the visual center. Keep the seated sightline as the non-negotiable constraint, then adjust artwork spacing or choose a different diagonal size to restore balance.
Final checklist before you buy or drill
- Viewing distance was measured from the seated head position to the screen plane.
- At least one manufacturer sizing reference was used, but no formula was treated as a universal answer.
- The exact TV’s width, height, depth, weight, bezel or frame and VESA pattern are documented.
- The complete footprint was taped on the wall and viewed from the primary seat.
- Screen center was set at seated eye level or slightly below, with any higher art-driven position tested in place.
- Mount VESA spacing, screw size and length, weight rating and movement match the exact model.
- Wall material, attachment points and hardware meet the mount and TV instructions; professional help is available if they cannot be verified.
- Soundbar, outlets, cables, safety locks and future removal have adequate clearance.
Once those checks pass, choose the smallest mount movement that serves the room and install from the mount template, not from a guess based on the screen’s center. The result should look like an intentional piece of wall art while remaining comfortable for the people who actually watch it.
