Start with the number of drive bays you need, then match the processor, memory, and network connections to your workload. The two-bay TerraMaster F2-424 suits buyers who want a smaller system; the four-bay F4-424 adds room for more drives; and the four-bay F4-424 Pro has higher listed processor and memory specifications for buyers considering heavier applications or multitasking. These are comparisons of TerraMaster’s published specifications, not independent performance results.

Compare the F2-424, F4-424, and F4-424 Pro

The main practical difference is whether you need two or four drive bays. The Pro model keeps four bays but lists a higher-spec processor and more memory than the standard F4-424.

Model Drive bays Published hardware and connectivity May suit
F2-424 2 Intel N95, 8 GB DDR5, dual 2.5GbE ports, and two M.2 NVMe slots A home or small-office buyer who wants a two-drive system and does not need four bays.
F4-424 4 Intel N95, 8 GB DDR5, dual 2.5GbE ports, and two M.2 NVMe slots A home or small-office buyer who prioritizes more drive bays and room to grow capacity.
F4-424 Pro 4 Intel Core i3, 32 GB DDR5, dual 2.5GbE ports, and two M.2 NVMe slots A buyer considering higher listed CPU and memory specifications for heavier applications or multitasking.

The comparison reflects TerraMaster’s product-family positioning and official F4-424, F4-424 Pro, and F2-424 listings. They do not establish real-world speed for a particular setup. TerraMaster describes its entry-level range as aimed at personal and home users, and its advanced range as intended for power home users and small offices, including virtualization and multitasking use cases.

Choose bay count by planning usable capacity

More bays provide space for more drives, but raw capacity is not the same as usable capacity. TerraMaster lists the F2-424 at up to 44 TB raw capacity with two 22 TB drives, and the F4-424 at up to 88 TB raw capacity with four 22 TB drives. The company notes that capacity varies with RAID type; the figures are not a promise of the space available for files in a particular configuration. • TNAS Mobile Full Control: Initialize setup for your F4-425 NAS storage via the TNAS Mobile app without a PC. The mobile app supports automatic photo and video backups, plus real-time local/remote synchronization, all managed through a single client
  • Ultra-Quiet & User-Friendly: The F4-425 NAS server operates at just 21dB(A), suitable for quiet environments like bedrooms. Its tool-free Push-Lock design HDD trays enable to install HDDs in 10 seconds
  • Massive Storage & Security: The F4-425 4-bay NAS supports up to 120TB storage (4 x 30TB for each bay), 50+ independent user accounts, and flexible TRAID / TRAID+ arrays, 30% more storage space than traditional RAID while ensuring data redundancy. SPC module and CloudSync (compatible with Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox) enable seamless cross-platform synchronization and uninterrupted data access. Additionally, TerraSync enables two-way sync between the F4-425 and PCs/Macs

Estimate the storage you will actually need, account for the capacity trade-offs of your intended RAID setup, and leave room for growth. If two drives meet your needs, the F2-424 avoids buying a four-bay enclosure you may not use. If you expect a larger library or want more drive bays available, compare the F4-424 and F4-424 Pro.

Match specifications to the work

Home file storage and media services

For shared files, backups, and other home uses, begin with bay count and the storage capacity you plan to retain. Do not choose the Pro solely because its processor and memory figures are higher: the official specifications do not show what performance a particular application or household will achieve.

Small-office applications and multitasking

If you expect to run several applications or are evaluating virtualization, the F4-424 Pro’s listed Intel Core i3 and 32 GB DDR5 distinguish it on paper from the F4-424’s Intel N95 and 8 GB DDR5. Whether that difference matters depends on the applications, users, and workload. TerraMaster’s advanced-range positioning is a manufacturer description, not an independent ranking or workload test.

Network connections

All three models in this comparison list dual 2.5GbE ports. That specification alone does not determine end-to-end transfer speeds: client devices, switch, cabling, and network configuration also affect what a setup can support. The cited product pages do not benchmark a complete home or office network.

Choose drives separately and check compatibility

The enclosure and storage drives are separate purchase decisions. TerraMaster’s F4-424 specification lists support for 3.5-inch SATA hard drives, 2.5-inch SATA hard drives, and 2.5-inch SATA SSDs. Before buying drives, check the current compatibility information for the exact NAS model and the capacities you intend to use. Do not assume that a drive’s connector or form factor alone guarantees compatibility.

Understand RAID and keep an independent backup

TerraMaster lists RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, and 10, as well as JBOD, Single, and TRAID for the F2-424 and F4-424 materials. These choices involve different trade-offs in usable capacity, fault tolerance, and expansion. The product listings do not establish one universally best configuration, so choose based on your capacity needs and tolerance for drive failure rather than assuming one option fits everyone.

RAID is not a substitute for an independent backup. Keep another copy of important files on separate storage or another backup destination so a NAS failure, accidental deletion, or other problem does not leave the only copy unavailable.

Use this buying checklist

  • Decide whether two bays are enough or whether you want four bays for additional drive capacity and room to grow.
  • Estimate usable storage needs rather than adding drive capacities and treating the sum as available file space.
  • List the applications and number of users the NAS will serve; consider the Pro’s higher listed CPU and memory if heavier applications or multitasking are part of the plan.
  • Check whether the rest of your network can make use of the NAS’s dual 2.5GbE ports.
  • Verify drive compatibility for the exact enclosure and plan an independent backup.
