There is no universal Ryobi staple size. Read the model number on your stapler, then match both the staple format (including crown width or gauge) and the leg length to that model’s official specification. For example, the P360 and P361 accept 18-gauge, 1/4-inch narrow-crown staples from 3/8 to 1-1/2 inches long, while the P317 uses a different 3/8-inch-crown format from 1/4 to 9/16 inches and is identified as compatible with Arrow T50 staples.
Why the model number matters
“Ryobi staple” is not a size specification. Ryobi sells and has sold staplers that use different crown widths, gauges, staple families and length ranges. A cartridge that fits one model can be the wrong shape for another, even when both tools are cordless or carry similar product names.

Three measurements determine whether a staple is suitable:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Format or family: the physical staple standard, such as narrow-crown or T50-compatible.
- Crown width: the crosspiece that remains visible across the material. It is commonly stated in inches or millimetres.
- Leg length: how far each leg extends into the workpiece. The tool’s approved range is a hard compatibility limit.
Gauge is another part of the format. The P360 and P361 are specified for 18-gauge staples; the P317 specification identifies the crown and length range and explicitly names Arrow T50 compatibility instead of giving the same 18-gauge narrow-crown description. Treat those as different consumable systems.

How to identify your Ryobi stapler
- Stop at the tool body or rating label. Look for a model code beginning with a letter and number combination, such as P360, P361, P317 or R18ST50-0. The code may be printed on a side label, near the magazine or on the rating plate.
- Record every character. A regional R18 model is not automatically equivalent to a similarly named P-series tool. Write down the full suffix, including “-0” where it appears.
- Check the battery platform only as a secondary clue. “18V ONE+” identifies the platform on models such as the P360, but it does not tell you which staple standard the magazine accepts.
- Open the model-specific product information or operator manual. Confirm format, crown and leg-length range together. If one of those dimensions is missing, keep looking in the manual rather than filling the gap with a guess.
- Compare the package label before buying. The staple box should state the same format and dimensions required by the manual. A package labelled only “for Ryobi” is not enough evidence.
P360: 18-gauge narrow-crown staples
Ryobi identifies the P360 as an 18V ONE+ AirStrike 18GA narrow-crown stapler. Its specified staple length is 3/8 to 1-1/2 inches. Select a package that states 18-gauge narrow-crown compatibility and falls inside that length range.
The P360 product page is marked discontinued. That status does not change the dimensions for an owner who already has the tool, but it does mean that listings or packaging created for newer Ryobi models should not be assumed to fit. Use the P360 code and its stated range as the deciding information.
The cited P360 information does not separately state a crown measurement in the available summary. Do not infer a crown size from the P361 or from a photograph of a staple strip; confirm the P360 manual or packaging specification for that dimension.
P361: 18-gauge, 1/4-inch narrow-crown staples
The P361 accepts 18-gauge narrow-crown staples from 3/8 to 1-1/2 inches long. Its operator manual identifies the crown as 1/4 inch, which gives you all three key dimensions: gauge, crown and leg length.
When shopping for P361 staples, look for all of the following on the box:
- 18-gauge construction;
- 1/4-inch narrow crown;
- a leg length between 3/8 and 1-1/2 inches.
A staple that is 18-gauge but has a wider crown is not equivalent. Likewise, a 1/4-inch crown outside the length range is not a supported substitute. Keep the P361’s model number visible while comparing packages, especially if a retailer lists several narrow-crown sizes on one page.

P317: a different 3/8-inch-crown format
The P317 is not interchangeable with the P360 or P361. Ryobi specifies a 3/8-inch crown and a leg-length range of 1/4 to 9/16 inches. Ryobi also explicitly identifies the P317 as compatible with Arrow T50 staples.

Do not insert the 18-gauge, 1/4-inch narrow-crown strips specified for the P360 or P361 into a P317. Even if the strip appears close in size, the crown geometry is different. For a P317, start with the 3/8-inch-crown/T50 description and then check that the selected leg length is no shorter than 1/4 inch and no longer than 9/16 inch.
The P317 information supplied here does not establish a universal material-by-material recommendation for choosing one length within that interval. Stay inside the published range and follow any project or material instructions supplied with the tool or fastener.
Regional Ryobi models require local verification
R18ST50-0 in New Zealand
Ryobi New Zealand support recommends 10 mm T50 staples for the R18ST50-0 and describes the crown as approximately 10 mm (about 3/8 inch). This is regional support guidance for that model, not a replacement for checking another R18 tool’s manual.
Ryobi UK models
Ryobi UK lists separate compatibility information for the R18ST50-0, R18GS18-0 and RST4-0. Its guidance tells users to consult the applicable manual for compatible staples. The presence of an R18 prefix does not establish a common staple size across every country or model.

Why US and regional specifications should not be mixed
Product names can look similar across markets while magazines, fastener standards and published measurements differ. A US P317 specification cannot be transferred to an R18ST50-0 simply because both are called staplers. Use the exact regional model code, the manual sold for that market and the dimensions printed on the local staple package.

A reliable staple-selection procedure
- Identify the exact model. Photograph or write down the code from the tool label.
- Determine the format first. Decide whether the manual calls for 18-gauge narrow-crown staples, a 3/8-inch-crown format, T50 staples or another named standard.
- Confirm the crown measurement. For the P361, it is 1/4 inch; for the P317, it is 3/8 inch; for the New Zealand R18ST50-0 guidance, it is approximately 10 mm.
- Check the leg-length limits. P360 and P361: 3/8 to 1-1/2 inches. P317: 1/4 to 9/16 inches. R18ST50-0 New Zealand guidance: 10 mm T50 staples, with no broader range established in the cited support statement.
- Read the complete staple-package specification. Match format, crown and length—not just the word “staple” or the tool brand.
- Use the manual when a dimension is missing. Do not infer compatibility from a visual match, a different Ryobi model or an online title that omits the crown.
- Load only the verified format. If the strip does not sit correctly in the magazine or the pusher cannot close normally, remove it and recheck the model and dimensions instead of forcing the mechanism.
How to read a staple package
Packaging often presents several numbers in a single line. Separate them into the dimensions that matter:
- Gauge: relevant to models such as the P360 and P361, which require 18-gauge staples.
- Crown: the width across the top of the staple. P361 uses a 1/4-inch narrow crown; P317 uses a 3/8-inch crown.
- Length: the leg measurement. Compare it with the model’s minimum and maximum, not merely with the project description.
- Family name: a designation such as T50 can be decisive when the manual names that family, as it does for the P317 and in the New Zealand R18ST50-0 guidance.
Boxes may list metric and imperial dimensions, or show several lengths in one multipack. Check the individual strip or compartment label so that every length you intend to load is inside the tool’s approved interval.
Choosing a length within the supported range
The manufacturer specifications establish what each stapler accepts, but they do not provide a universal rule saying that one supported length is best for every fabric, wood thickness or other material. That choice depends on the workpiece, the desired holding depth and the risk of piercing the back surface.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Use the published limits as boundaries rather than as a performance promise:
- For a P360 or P361, any selected leg length must be at least 3/8 inch and no more than 1-1/2 inches.
- For a P317, stay between 1/4 and 9/16 inch.
- For the New Zealand R18ST50-0 recommendation, use the stated 10 mm T50 size unless the local manual specifies another approved option.
If the material thickness or fastening depth is not documented for your project, test on a scrap of the same material while keeping the staple format and length within the manual’s limits. A test can reveal whether the legs protrude, buckle or fail to hold, but it does not make an otherwise incompatible staple safe to use.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Buying by brand name alone
Symptom: The package says “Ryobi staples” but does not show crown, gauge or length. Correction: find the model’s manual and buy only a package that states the required dimensions.

Confusing crown width with leg length
Symptom: A staple is advertised as “3/8-inch” and you assume that is its length. Correction: determine whether the number describes the crown or the legs. The P317’s 3/8-inch figure is its crown, while its leg range is 1/4 to 9/16 inch.
Using P360/P361 strips in a P317
Symptom: An 18-gauge narrow-crown strip does not align with the P317 magazine. Correction: stop and switch to the P317’s 3/8-inch-crown, T50-compatible format.
Using a P317 strip in a P361
Symptom: A 3/8-inch-crown strip appears too wide for the narrow magazine. Correction: the P361 requires 18-gauge, 1/4-inch narrow-crown staples, not the P317 format.
Transferring a specification between countries
Symptom: A regional R18 tool is being matched to a US P-series chart. Correction: use the exact regional code and local manual. The New Zealand R18ST50-0 recommendation and UK compatibility guidance demonstrate why market-specific verification matters.
Ignoring the length range
Symptom: The crown and gauge match, but the legs are outside the permitted interval. Correction: return the package and select a length inside the model’s limits. Format compatibility does not override a length restriction.
Worked examples
You own a P361
Read “P361” from the tool, then select 18-gauge, 1/4-inch narrow-crown staples. The leg length must be 3/8 to 1-1/2 inches. A box listing only “T50” or only “3/8-inch crown” does not satisfy that specification.

You own a P317
Use the P317 specification: 3/8-inch crown, 1/4- to 9/16-inch legs, and Arrow T50 compatibility. Do not substitute the P361’s 1/4-inch narrow-crown strips.
You own a discontinued P360
Use 18-gauge narrow-crown staples from 3/8 to 1-1/2 inches. Because the model is discontinued, verify the package against the P360 information rather than assuming a current-looking listing uses the same dimensions.
You own an R18ST50-0 purchased in New Zealand
Follow the local recommendation for 10 mm T50 staples with an approximately 10 mm crown. Do not replace that guidance with a P360 or P361 chart unless your own manual explicitly identifies those dimensions.

When the model number is missing
Do not guess from the magazine shape, battery, color or a partial product name. Photograph the label, search Ryobi support for the complete code and locate the operator manual for that exact market. If the code is worn away and no authoritative identification is possible, the safest choice is to pause the purchase rather than risk loading an incompatible strip. A manual that states only a family name but omits a dimension should be treated as incomplete until the applicable support page or manual supplies the missing measurement.
Quick decision checklist
- Model code copied exactly, including regional suffix.
- Staple family or gauge matches the manual.
- Crown width matches the manual.
- Every leg length in the package is inside the model’s published range.
- Regional guidance has been checked for tools bought outside the United States.
- No staple is being substituted solely because its package says “Ryobi.”
The practical answer
Choose staples by model, format, crown and leg length in that order. P360 and P361 owners need 18-gauge narrow-crown staples in the 3/8- to 1-1/2-inch range, with the P361 manual specifying a 1/4-inch crown. P317 owners need the separate 3/8-inch-crown, 1/4- to 9/16-inch format identified as Arrow T50 compatible. Regional R18 tools require their own local manual and support guidance. If any one of those dimensions is unknown, do not rely on a visual match—identify the model first.
