Choose Spanx shapewear by measuring against the chart for the exact garment, ordering your measured or true size, and changing the compression level—not the size—when you want more sculpting. The finished fit should feel snug and smooth while you move, never pinching, rolling, or restricting breathing. Product-specific instructions override general guidance, so check the current page for the style, length, and between-size advice.
Start with the exact garment, not a generic Spanx chart
Spanx makes multiple shapewear categories and constructions. A bodysuit, brief, high-waisted short, and camisole can cover different areas and use different fabrics, so a size that works in one style is not automatically the right choice in another.

Use the chart associated with that garment category and follow any notes on the product page about height, length, petite proportions, or choosing between sizes. Spanx’s official size guide says its charts and measuring tips are the starting point for ordering correctly.

The product page matters because it can add instructions that do not apply across the entire brand. For example, the SPANXsculpt OnCore High-Waisted Mid-Thigh Short gives separate Regular and Petite length guidance and tells shoppers to size up when they fall between sizes. That is an instruction for that item, not a universal rule for every Spanx garment.

Measure before you choose a size
Guessing from your usual clothing size or from the amount of compression you want is less reliable than measuring. Put on lightweight, close-fitting clothing or measure over the undergarments you expect to wear with the shapewear. Stand naturally rather than pulling your stomach in or holding your breath.
- Read the chart first. Note which measurements the specific garment requests and where the chart tells you to place the tape.
- Keep the tape level. Hold it flat and comfortably against your body without tightening it. A measurement that digs in can place you in a smaller size than you need.
- Record the result. Write down each measurement before comparing it with the chart so you do not rely on memory while shopping.
- Use string if necessary. Spanx says you can wrap ribbon or string around the relevant area, mark the meeting point, and then lay it against a yardstick to read the length.
- Measure again if the result seems surprising. Check that the tape stayed level and that you used the location named by the chart. Small placement errors can change the chart result.
The current online guide’s numerical ranges are the authority for the order you are placing. Because ranges can vary by category and can be updated, use the live chart rather than a copied number from an older article or a different garment.
Choose the chart size, then check how it feels
Spanx’s general shapewear guidance is to order your true size. The brand specifically advises against deliberately buying a smaller size to obtain stronger control. A smaller garment can create pressure at the edges, distort the intended coverage, and make rolling or pinching more likely without delivering the even shaping you wanted.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →When your measurements fall clearly within one chart range, choose that size. When they fall between two sizes, follow the product page’s instruction rather than applying a blanket rule. The OnCore High-Waisted Mid-Thigh Short, for instance, says to size up between sizes. Another style may provide a different recommendation based on its fabric, seams, or coverage.
After you put the garment on, the chart is only the first check. Spanx describes the target sensation as “a second skin—snug but not restrictive.” Snug fabric and steady, even support are expected. Sharp pressure, numbness, chafing, difficulty breathing, or an urge to remove the item immediately are not signs that the garment is doing a better job.
Use compression level to change control, not a smaller size
Size determines how the garment fits your body. Compression level determines how much sculpting the fabric is designed to provide. Treat those as separate decisions.
| Decision | What to adjust | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The garment is too tight, pinches, or rolls | Recheck measurements, follow the chart, and consider a different style or a larger chart size | Reducing the size is likely to intensify the problem rather than create even shaping |
| You want more sculpting but the measured size feels comfortable | Choose a stronger compression level in the same measured size | Spanx recommends changing compression level instead of sizing down |
| You want light smoothing for longer or less formal wear | Choose a lighter compression level in the measured size | Lower compression can better match the intended use while preserving the correct fit |
Spanx identifies five compression levels, ranging from SPANXsmooth, the lightest, to SPANXsupersculpt, the strongest. The middle levels sit between those endpoints. Select the level according to the effect and wear time you want, while keeping the size tied to your measurements.

How the five compression levels affect your choice
The five-level system is useful because it lets you fine-tune control without compromising the underlying fit. Start by deciding what you want the garment to do under the outfit. If you want a subtle smoothing effect and expect to wear it for many hours, the lightest SPANXsmooth level may be the appropriate starting point. If you want visibly stronger sculpting for a particular outfit, move upward through the levels while retaining the size indicated by your measurements.
The strongest option, SPANXsupersculpt, is not a reason to buy a smaller garment. A correctly sized garment at a stronger level should still allow normal breathing and movement. If the measured size feels restrictive at a given level, step down in compression or choose a different construction rather than forcing the fabric into a smaller circumference.
Compression is also a style decision. Two garments in the same nominal size can feel different when one covers the torso and another ends at the thigh. Read the product description for the intended coverage and compare it with the area you want smoothed. The right compression level cannot compensate for a rise or leg opening that ends in the wrong place.
What “comfortable” means in a real fit check
Assess the garment while standing, sitting, walking, and bending. A fit that looks smooth only when you stand still can still be wrong for a full day.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

- Leg openings: On shorts or briefs, the openings should stay in place without biting into the thigh or creating a pronounced ridge.
- Coverage: The garment should reach the areas described on its product page. If you are constantly pulling it upward or downward, the style or length may not suit your proportions.
- Breathing and movement: You should be able to take a normal breath, sit, walk, and bend without restrictive pressure.
- Surface: Fabric should lie smoothly under clothing. Persistent bunching, folds, or rolling usually points to a size, length, or style mismatch.
- Duration: Wear it long enough to notice whether pressure builds in one location. Immediate comfort alone does not rule out a problem that appears after movement.
If the garment feels like a second skin but remains easy to move in, the size and compression are working together. If it feels like a clamp, do not treat that discomfort as evidence of superior shaping.
Specific example: SPANXsculpt OnCore High-Waisted Mid-Thigh Short
The OnCore High-Waisted Mid-Thigh Short illustrates why item-level instructions matter.
- Measure first: Use the measurements requested on the product page.
- Choose length by height: The page recommends Regular for people above 5 feet 4 inches and Petite for people below 5 feet 4 inches.
- Between sizes: The page says to choose the larger size.
- Rolling: If the garment rolls, the page notes that trying Petite may help. This is a style-specific suggestion, not a general Spanx sizing law.
Apply those directions only to this OnCore short. A different Spanx short can use another rise, leg length, or fabric tension, so its own page takes precedence.

Diagnose pinching, rolling, and gaps
Pinching at the waist or leg
First verify that you measured at the chart’s stated location and did not pull the tape tight. If your measurement is between sizes, follow the item page’s instruction; for the OnCore short, that means sizing up. If the chart size still pinches, the cut may not suit your proportions or the chosen compression level may be too strong. Try the same measured size in a lighter level or a style with different coverage rather than automatically going smaller.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Rolling at the top or bottom
Rolling can result from an incorrect size, unsuitable length, or a mismatch between the garment and your proportions. Smooth the fabric into its intended position and reassess after sitting and walking. For the OnCore short, Spanx specifically mentions trying Petite when rolling occurs. For other styles, use the product page’s length and fit notes.
Gaps, sagging, or excess fabric
Gaps can mean the garment is too large for the area it is intended to support, but they can also indicate that the style’s shape does not match your body. Recheck the measurements and coverage description before changing size. A garment that is loose in one area and tight in another may need a different style rather than a different number.
Numbness, restricted breathing, or persistent pain
Remove the garment. These symptoms are not a target fit. Recheck the chart and compression choice, and do not continue wearing an item that remains uncomfortable after repositioning. If discomfort is caused by the construction rather than the size, choose a style with different coverage.
Match the style to the coverage you actually need
Before selecting a size, identify the area you want to smooth and the clothing you will wear over it. A high-waisted mid-thigh short is intended to cover a different area from a brief or bodysuit. If you choose a garment that ends above the area you want supported, pulling it lower can create rolling and uneven tension. If you choose more coverage than you need, extra fabric or stronger compression may make movement less comfortable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse the product description to confirm rise, leg coverage, and length. Then compare those details with where your clothing sits. The best size cannot compensate for a garment that ends at the wrong point for your outfit.
Make a between-size decision without guessing
When two sizes appear plausible, use this order:
- Follow the product page if it gives a direct between-size instruction.
- Confirm that your measurements were taken correctly and at the chart’s stated locations.
- Consider the garment’s length and coverage notes, especially if petite or regular versions are offered.
- Choose the compression level separately. Do not use a smaller size as a substitute for stronger compression.
- Use the movement check after the garment is on. If the larger chart size is comfortable but does not provide the desired effect, a stronger compression level in that size may be the better adjustment.
This process prevents a common mistake: treating a size boundary as permission to squeeze into the smaller option even when the item page says otherwise.

Care instructions can affect long-term fit
Spanx directs shoppers to the garment’s inner care label or product page for washing and care instructions. Follow those directions for the specific item rather than assuming every Spanx fabric can be cleaned identically. Incorrect care can affect stretch and recovery, which in turn can change how the garment feels and stays in place.
Keep the care information with the garment if you remove tags or packaging. When you buy more than one style, check each label separately; category-level assumptions are not a substitute for the instructions attached to that product.

A practical buying checklist
- Have you opened the current chart for the exact garment category?
- Have you read the product page for height, length, petite, and between-size notes?
- Did you take the requested measurements without tightening the tape?
- If you lacked a tape measure, did you use ribbon or string against a yardstick as Spanx suggests?
- Did you select the chart size instead of sizing down for extra control?
- Did you choose compression level separately from size?
- Can you sit, walk, bend, and breathe normally in the garment?
- Are the waist and leg edges smooth rather than pinching or rolling?
- Have you checked the inner label or product page for care instructions?
How to make the final decision
Keep the item when the measured size follows the relevant chart, the coverage matches your outfit, and the garment remains snug but unrestricted through normal movement. Change the compression level when you want a different degree of sculpting. Change the size only when the chart or product-specific guidance calls for it, or when the current size produces clear signs of poor fit. If those adjustments do not solve the problem, select a style whose length and coverage better match your proportions.
That approach follows Spanx’s own distinction between size and compression: fit your body first, then choose the shaping intensity.
Frequently Asked Questions
How should Spanx shapewear fit?
Spanx says shapewear should feel like “a second skin—snug but not restrictive.” It should smooth steadily while you can breathe, sit, walk, and bend normally. Pinching, rolling, numbness, chafing, or persistent pain indicates that the size, compression level, length, or style needs reconsideration.
Should I size down in Spanx shapewear for more control?
No. Spanx’s general guidance is to order your true size and select a stronger compression level if you want more sculpting. A smaller size can create uneven pressure and make rolling or pinching more likely.
What should I do if I am between Spanx sizes?
Read the specific product page first. Between-size advice can vary by style. The SPANXsculpt OnCore High-Waisted Mid-Thigh Short, for example, instructs shoppers to choose the larger size.

How do I choose between Regular and Petite?
Use the height and length directions on the individual product page. The OnCore High-Waisted Mid-Thigh Short recommends Regular above 5 feet 4 inches and Petite below 5 feet 4 inches. That guidance is specific to that short, not every Spanx garment.
Why does my Spanx garment roll?
Rolling may come from incorrect measurements, an unsuitable length, or a mismatch between the garment and your proportions. Reposition it and reassess after sitting and walking, then follow the product page’s length advice. For the OnCore short, Spanx notes that trying Petite may help.
How can I measure without a tape measure?
Spanx suggests wrapping ribbon or string around the required area, marking where it meets, and laying it against a yardstick to read the measurement. Compare that result with the chart for the exact garment.

Which compression level should I choose?
Spanx lists five levels, from SPANXsmooth, the lightest, to SPANXsupersculpt, the strongest. Pick the level that matches the sculpting effect and intended wear, but keep the size based on your measurements rather than using compression as a reason to size down.
Where can I find care instructions?
Check the garment’s inner care label or its product page. Spanx directs shoppers to those item-specific instructions because care requirements can differ by product.
The Bottom Line
Measure for the exact Spanx garment, follow its live chart and product notes, and order the indicated true size. Choose one of the five compression levels to change sculpting intensity, not a smaller size. A correct fit is snug like a second skin, smooth through normal movement, and free from pinching, rolling, restricted breathing, or pain.
