The right Sony noise-cancelling headphones depend on your priorities, not a universal winner. Start with over-ear fit and weight, then decide how much ambient sound you need to reduce, how long you go between charges, whether you use a phone and computer together, which Bluetooth codecs your devices support, and whether you prefer neutral or bass-forward sound.
In this range, the WH-1000XM6 is Sony’s premium-feature option, the WH-CH720N emphasizes low weight and a longer published battery estimate, and ULT WEAR (WH-ULT900N) is aimed at listeners who want a dedicated bass boost. Those are distinctions from Sony’s specifications and product descriptions, not independent rankings of cancellation, sound, comfort, or call quality.

Start with the decisions that actually determine the best model
Buying by model number alone is a shortcut to the wrong fit. Use the following order: physical comfort, your noise environment, battery needs, device connections, codec compatibility, sound preference, and then price and return protection. A feature matters only if it solves a problem you regularly have.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFit, weight, and session length
Sony lists the WH-1000XM6 at approximately 8.96 ounces and the WH-CH720N at approximately 6.8 ounces. That makes the WH-CH720N about 2.16 ounces lighter on the published specifications. Weight is a useful starting point for long flights, workdays, or study sessions, but it does not establish universal comfort. Head shape, clamp pressure, ear space, pad material, glasses, hair, and heat all change the experience.

Because Sony does not publish a comfort score that applies to every listener, try the headphones when possible. If you buy remotely, check the seller’s return window before opening the box and keep all packaging until you know the headband, pads, and pressure remain comfortable after a full session.
What kind of noise you need to reduce
Noise cancelling is most relevant when you face a predictable, continuous environment such as transport, HVAC noise, or an open office. It is not a reason to assume that every unwanted sound disappears, and the supplied product pages do not provide an independently measured comparison of cancellation between these models.
Compare the feature sets and your use case rather than declaring one model the strongest blocker. The WH-1000XM6 includes ambient sound control and Sony’s Adaptive NC Optimizer. The WH-CH720N lists noise cancelling and ambient sound. Sony describes ULT WEAR as offering noise cancelling, ambient sound, and ULT bass modes. These descriptions establish available functions, not a laboratory ranking.

Noise cancelling changes the published maximum. Sony lists the following maximum music-playback estimates:
| Model | Noise cancelling on | Noise cancelling off |
|---|---|---|
| WH-1000XM6 | Up to 30 hours | Up to 40 hours |
| WH-CH720N | Up to 35 hours | Up to 50 hours |
| ULT WEAR (WH-ULT900N) | Up to 30 hours | Up to 50 hours |
These are manufacturer maximums, not guaranteed runtime. Actual endurance changes with volume, calls, codec, ambient-mode settings, temperature, and battery age. If you spend most of the day with cancellation enabled, compare the “on” column, not the larger number with cancellation disabled.
Phone-and-laptop use
Sony documents multipoint on the WH-1000XM6 and WH-CH720N, and describes multipoint for ULT WEAR. Multipoint is useful when you want one headset associated with two source devices, such as a phone and a laptop. The exact switching behavior can depend on the devices, operating systems, active calls, and app audio. Confirm the current instructions for your model and test your own two-device workflow during the return period rather than assuming every transition will be seamless.

Bluetooth codecs and source compatibility
The WH-1000XM6 supports SBC, AAC, LDAC, and LC3 according to Sony’s listed specifications. The WH-CH720N supports SBC and AAC. Codec support matters only when the playback device, operating system, app, and connection mode can use the same codec. A codec appearing on the headphone specification does not guarantee that your phone or computer will select it, nor does it guarantee a meaningful audible improvement in your particular setup.

Check the specifications of your main source device before paying extra for a codec you cannot use. Also consider whether reliability, comfort, and a stable connection matter more to you than the highest available codec option.
Sound profile and control preferences
ULT WEAR is the clearest choice in this set for someone who specifically wants a dedicated bass-boost control. Sony presents its ULT modes as a listening option, not proof of better cancellation or overall sound quality. If you prefer less bass or want to tune the sound yourself, audition the headphones with familiar tracks and spoken audio at safe listening levels.
Model comparison: what Sony’s published information supports
| Model | Best fit to describe | Published distinctions | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| WH-1000XM6 | A reader prioritizing Sony’s premium feature set | Approximately 8.96 oz; up to 30 hours with noise cancelling on and 40 hours off; SBC, AAC, LDAC, and LC3; multipoint; ambient sound; Adaptive NC Optimizer | Specifications and superiority statements come from Sony; no independent comparison establishes better cancellation, sound, comfort, or calls. |
| WH-CH720N | A reader prioritizing lower published weight and a strong stated battery estimate | Approximately 6.8 oz; up to 35 hours with noise cancelling on and 50 hours off; SBC and AAC; ambient sound; Sony describes multipoint | Weight and battery figures do not show that cancellation or sound quality matches the WH-1000XM6. |
| ULT WEAR / WH-ULT900N | A reader who wants a bass-forward listening option | Dedicated ULT bass modes; noise cancelling; ambient sound; multipoint; up to 30 hours with noise cancelling on and 50 hours off | Confirm current availability and specifications for the exact model suffix; no independent performance comparison is established here. |
When the WH-1000XM6 makes sense
Choose the WH-1000XM6 when its combination of features matters more than minimum weight or maximum stated endurance. It is the model in this comparison with the broadest listed codec support, including LDAC and LC3, and it combines multipoint, ambient sound, and Adaptive NC Optimizer.
Sony’s product page says the HD Noise Canceling Processor QN3 is “7x faster than the QN1” used in the WH-1000XM5 and that it optimizes 12 microphones in real time for noise cancellation, sound quality, and call clarity. That is Sony Electronics’ own product claim; it is not an independently measured result. The associated Sony FAQ is dated July 24, 2026.
The published 30-hour maximum with noise cancelling enabled is substantial for many travel and work routines, while the 40-hour figure applies with cancellation disabled. Choose this model for the feature combination, not because the processor claim proves a universal lead in every environment.

- PREMIUM NOISE CANCELLATION: Two processors control 8 microphones for unprecedented noise cancellation. With Auto NC Optimizer, noise canceling is automatically optimized based on your wearing conditions and environment.
- MAGNIFICENT SOUND: Engineered to perfection with the new Integrated Processor V1.
- CRYSTAL CLEAR HANDS-FREE CALLING: 4 beamforming microphones, precise voice pickup, and advanced audio signal processing.
- LONG BATTERY LIFE: Up to 30-hour battery life with quick charging (3 min charge for 3 hours of playback).
- ULTRA-COMFORTABLE: Lightweight design with soft fit leather.
Check these points before buying
- Confirm that your primary phone or computer supports the codec you intend to use.
- Decide whether approximately 8.96 ounces feels acceptable for your longest sessions.
- Test multipoint with the exact two devices you use most.
- Use the return policy to evaluate pressure, ear clearance, heat, and stability.
When the WH-CH720N makes sense
The WH-CH720N is the practical candidate for a reader who values a lighter published design and longer maximum battery estimates over the WH-1000XM6’s broader codec list and premium feature description. At approximately 6.8 ounces, it is Sony’s lighter specification among these two models. Sony lists up to 35 hours with noise cancelling on and up to 50 hours with it off.
Its listed codec support is SBC and AAC, and Sony lists ambient sound and multipoint. That can be enough for everyday phone, tablet, and laptop use when your devices already work well with those codecs. Do not infer equal noise reduction, call performance, or sound quality from the lower weight or longer battery estimate; those measurements are not supplied as independent comparisons.
Who should look elsewhere
If you specifically need LDAC or LC3 support, the WH-CH720N’s published specification does not list those codecs. If a bass-control button is central to your decision, ULT WEAR is the model in this set Sony positions around that feature. If your priority is Sony’s most extensive feature set, compare the WH-1000XM6 first.
When ULT WEAR is the right direction
ULT WEAR, identified in Sony material as WH-ULT900N, is for listeners who want bass to be an explicit control rather than an incidental tuning choice. Sony describes ULT bass modes alongside noise cancelling, ambient sound, and multipoint.
Sony’s ULT WEAR FAQ lists maximum playback of up to 30 hours with noise cancelling on and up to 50 hours with it off. The page was accessed October 13, 2026, and the FAQ publication date was not stated in the available material. Treat the figures as Sony estimates and verify the current listing for the exact suffix, region, stock status, and included accessories.
ULT WEAR is a taste-led alternative. The existence of a bass boost does not demonstrate stronger noise cancellation, higher fidelity, or better calls than either other model. Audition the ULT modes with bass-heavy music and with dialogue; a setting that sounds exciting for a short track may not be the one you prefer for several hours.

Choose by situation instead of by marketing tier
For commuting and air travel
Start with over-ear seal and long-session comfort, then compare the noise-cancelling-on battery figures. The WH-1000XM6 and ULT WEAR are both listed at up to 30 hours with cancellation enabled; the WH-CH720N is listed at up to 35 hours. Those numbers do not tell you which headset will block more of your particular environment, so use a returnable purchase or an in-person audition to assess the seal and controls.

Ambient sound control can be as important as cancellation when you need to hear a colleague or announcement. All three model descriptions include an ambient-sound mode. Check how quickly you can switch modes, whether the controls are easy to find without looking, and whether the fit remains comfortable through a complete work block.
For a laptop plus phone
Prioritize multipoint documentation and then verify the actual handoff. Pair both devices, play audio from the computer, place a test call from the phone, and return to computer audio. Repeat the test with the apps you actually use. This reveals device-specific behavior that a feature list cannot promise.
For long study or work sessions
The WH-CH720N’s approximately 6.8-ounce published weight may be attractive if weight is your main physical concern. Nevertheless, a lighter specification cannot predict clamp comfort or heat. Keep the WH-1000XM6 in consideration if its other controls and codec support matter more to you than the 2.16-ounce difference from the published figures.
For bass-focused listening
Put ULT WEAR first on your audition list because Sony gives it a dedicated ULT bass control. Compare several familiar recordings, podcasts, and games with ULT enabled and disabled. This is a preference decision, not a technical ranking.

How to audition a pair before committing
- Write down your two most important conditions. Examples include “must last a full workday with cancellation on,” “must switch between phone and laptop,” or “must have a bass control.” This prevents a minor specification from overruling your actual use.
- Check the exact model and regional suffix. Product lines, stock, specifications, and promotions can change. Confirm that the listing is for WH-1000XM6, WH-CH720N, or WH-ULT900N as applicable.
- Measure the physical fit during a realistic session. Wear the headphones long enough to notice pressure at the crown, jaw, glasses, and ears. Move your head as you would on a commute or at a desk.
- Test cancellation and ambient modes in your normal environment. Listen to speech and steady background noise. Record what improves and what remains audible without turning the result into a claim about another model.
- Test both source devices. Confirm pairing, multipoint switching, microphone behavior in your calling app, and the codec selected by your phone or computer.
- Check battery reporting and controls. Use the manufacturer maximum as a planning reference, then observe how the battery changes during your own volume and mode settings.
- Keep return and warranty information. Verify the seller, local price, stock, return deadline, warranty coverage, and included items before discarding packaging.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistaking a specification for a ranking
A processor speed claim, a codec list, a lower weight, or a longer battery estimate describes one aspect of a product. None independently proves that a model is best overall. Keep each figure attached to its source and condition.

Comparing the wrong battery numbers
Comparing 50 hours with cancellation off against 30 or 35 hours with it on creates a misleading impression. Match the setting you will use most often, and remember that Sony calls these maximum playback estimates.
Assuming multipoint is identical across devices
Multipoint is documented for the models described here, but switching can vary with device and software state. Test calls, notifications, and media handoffs before the return period ends.
Paying for a codec your setup cannot use
First identify the codec your phone, computer, operating system, and app can actually provide. Then decide whether that compatibility is worth prioritizing over fit, battery, or price.

Ignoring the return terms
Comfort and sound preference are personal, and no independent comfort or sound comparison is established for this set. A clear return policy is therefore part of the purchase decision, not an afterthought.
A final purchase checklist
- Choose the model that fits your head comfortably for the longest session you expect.
- Compare noise-cancelling-on battery estimates if cancellation will stay enabled.
- Confirm codec compatibility on every source device that matters.
- Verify multipoint behavior with your phone and computer.
- Audition ULT WEAR if a dedicated bass boost is important.
- Check current local price, stock, seller, return terms, warranty, and exact model suffix.
- Remember that Sony’s specifications and claims are not independent tests of cancellation, sound, comfort, or call quality.
The WH-1000XM6 is the feature-rich choice in Sony’s listed range; the WH-CH720N is the lighter, longer-estimate option; and ULT WEAR is the bass-control alternative. Your best match is the one whose fit, daily battery condition, device compatibility, and sound controls line up with the way you will actually use it.
