How to Choose the Right Smart Bulbs for Your Home

Start with the bulb that physically fits your fixture, then choose brightness by lumens, the light color and controls you need, and a model that works with your smart-home setup. Check the exact bulb’s compatibility—including any wall dimmer—before buying; a Matter mark alone does not guarantee that it will work with every controller.

1. Check the socket, shape and fixture restrictions

Before comparing apps or color effects, note the base and shape of the bulb you are replacing. Match these to the fixture and check its size and use restrictions, such as whether the bulb is intended for an enclosed fixture. A bulb can have the right base but still be too large or unsuitable for a particular fixture.

Use the manufacturer’s dimensions and compatibility information for the exact model and variant. Do not assume that two bulbs with the same socket designation have identical dimensions or fixture suitability.

2. Choose brightness by lumens

Lumens describe light output; watts describe electrical power use. Use a lumen rating to compare brightness rather than relying on an incandescent-equivalent watt label alone. ENERGY STAR gives these minimum-output equivalents; they are reference points, not prescriptions for how bright every room should be:

Incandescent equivalent Minimum light output
40 watts 450 lumens (ENERGY STAR; year not stated)
60 watts 800 lumens (ENERGY STAR; year not stated)
75 watts 1,100 lumens (ENERGY STAR; year not stated)
100 watts 1,600 lumens (ENERGY STAR; year not stated)
150 watts 2,600 lumens (ENERGY STAR; year not stated)

As a starting point, compare the lumen output of your current bulb with candidates for the same fixture. Then consider the room and how you use the light. A single bulb’s rating does not determine the right brightness for every space.

ENERGY STAR’s brightness guide provides the equivalences above; the page does not state a publication year.

3. Pick the light appearance and features for each room

White light: fixed or adjustable

Color temperature is measured in kelvins (K). Lower values look warmer; higher values look cooler. ENERGY STAR’s educational guide places warm or soft white around 2700K and daylight around 6500K. A fixed-white bulb provides one general white appearance, while tunable-white models let you adjust it. Choose based on whether you want that flexibility in the room.

Color, dimming and automation

Some models add color-changing modes; others focus on white light. Smart-bulb features can also include app or voice control, remote on/off, dimming, scenes and schedules. Decide which you will actually use. ENERGY STAR recommends planning by room, since more features can raise the initial cost.

Compare candidates on the same points: physical fit, lumens, white-light range or color options, controls, platform and protocol support, wall-dimmer compatibility, and initial cost. No single feature set is right for every room.

4. Verify the smart-home connection you need

Start with how you expect to control the lights: an app, voice assistant, hub or smart-home platform. Check the exact bulb listing for supported platforms and any controller requirements; support can vary by model and variant.

The Connectivity Standards Alliance’s 2023 retail education presentation says Matter devices connect to networks and one another using Wi-Fi, Ethernet or Thread. A Matter mark is useful interoperability evidence, but it does not remove the need to check the particular bulb’s supported controllers and setup requirements.

Thread-based products carry a Thread badge, and many require a Thread Border Router. That function is often built into a compatible smart-home hub or another device, but confirm that your setup includes one if the bulb needs it. See the Connectivity Standards Alliance’s Matter retail education presentation for its explanation of network options and Thread Border Routers.

5. Check dimming at both the bulb and wall switch

A bulb described as dimmable still needs to work with an existing wall dimmer. Check the bulb packaging or manufacturer’s compatibility information for the exact dimmer; an LED-specific dimmer may be needed. Do not assume that a smart bulb’s app dimming means it will work correctly with any wall dimmer. ENERGY STAR’s lighting color guide advises checking compatibility with the manufacturer or packaging.

6. Use this buying checklist

  1. Record the existing bulb’s base and shape, then check fixture size and use restrictions.
  2. Use the current bulb’s light output as a reference and compare candidates by lumens.
  3. Choose whether the room needs fixed white, tunable white, color, dimming or other controls.
  4. Check platform support and any required hub, controller or Thread Border Router for the exact model.
  5. Confirm both the bulb’s dimming feature and compatibility with any wall dimmer.
  6. Compare the shortlisted bulbs for fit, brightness, light options, controls, compatibility and initial cost.

Certification records and compatibility listings are model-specific and can change. Confirm the exact variant and current requirements with the manufacturer or relevant platform when buying. ENERGY STAR’s cited guidance does not establish a quantified household energy-savings percentage for smart bulbs under defined usage conditions.
