How to Choose the Right Size in New Balance 990v3 Sneakers

Start with the New Balance size you normally wear, then choose the 990v3 width separately. Measure both feet, compare the longer foot and widest part with the size chart for the exact regional 990v3 listing, and choose the larger size when you fall between sizes. The 990v3 is sold as a men’s/unisex model, so its number must be converted before you compare it with a women’s US size.

The short answer: choose length first, width second

New Balance says its shoes generally run true to size and align with standard industry sizing (official New Balance Product & Fit FAQ, accessed October 13, 2026). That makes your usual New Balance or comparable athletic-shoe length the sensible starting point, not an automatic size-up or size-down. The important qualification is that “size” has two independent parts:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Length: the heel-to-toe measurement shown as a US, UK, EU or centimetre value.
  • Width: the letter or code controlling room across the forefoot and, to a lesser extent, the upper.

A shoe that feels tight at the little-toe side may need a wider width rather than a longer toe box. Conversely, extra room at the sides does not make up for toes touching the front. Make the length decision from your longer foot, then make the width decision from the widest part of that foot and the pressure you feel when standing.

Because colors and regional listings can have different inventory, open the exact 990v3 product page you intend to buy. Confirm that it lists the 990v3, the correct men’s/unisex or women’s designation, your region’s measurements, and the width options actually offered in that colorway.

What the 990v3 size chart means

It is a men’s/unisex chart

The official 990v3 page labels the model men’s/unisex. A number on that chart is therefore not automatically the same number on a women’s US chart. For example, the model chart maps men’s US 9 to women’s US 10.5, UK 8.5, EU 43 and 27.5 cm. Use the conversion row rather than adding a fixed number from memory, especially when a retailer displays only one sizing system.

Reference on the 990v3 chart Equivalent shown by New Balance How to use it
Men’s/unisex US 9 Women’s US 10.5 Use this women’s number only when the listing is asking for a women’s US size.
Men’s/unisex US 9 UK 8.5 Match this to a UK-labelled retailer chart.
Men’s/unisex US 9 EU 43 Match this to an EU-labelled retailer chart.
Men’s/unisex US 9 27.5 cm Compare with your measured foot length, not with the outside length of the shoe.

Those are conversion values, not a promise that every foot measuring 27.5 cm will feel identical in every 990v3 colorway. Fit can change with socks, orthotics, foot shape and the width offered on the listing.

Width letters are not half sizes

The 990v3 chart lists four width choices:

Chart label Meaning in the 990v3 listing Typical use
Narrow B Narrow width For a foot that has excess side-to-side space in standard width.
Standard D Standard men’s/unisex width The standard width for the men’s/unisex chart.
Wide 2E Wide width For more forefoot room when standard width creates side pressure.
X-Wide 4E Extra-wide width For substantially more room than 2E.

New Balance’s width FAQ identifies D as men’s standard width and B as women’s standard width. Do not assume that a women’s standard B is interchangeable with a men’s/unisex standard D; the label describes the chart’s width system and intended sizing context.

Changing from D to 2E changes the fit across the shoe. Changing from US 9 to US 9.5 primarily changes length and also adds a small amount of overall volume. A longer shoe is not a reliable substitute for the correct width.

Measure your feet before ordering

Feet can swell during the day, and the two feet are often slightly different. New Balance’s printable measuring guidance (Australia tool, 2025) recommends measuring in the late afternoon, when feet may be at their largest, and selecting the larger size when you are between sizes.

Prepare the measuring tool

  1. Use New Balance’s printable measuring tool and print it at 100% scale. Do not select “fit to page” or another automatic scaling option.
  2. Check the printed scale exactly as the page instructs. If the scale is not accurate, reprint before measuring.
  3. Wear the type of socks you expect to use with the 990v3. Thin dress socks and thick athletic socks can produce different pressure and volume results.

Record length for each foot

  1. Measure in the late afternoon on a firm, level surface.
  2. Place your heel in the tool’s marked heel position and stand with normal weight on the foot. Sitting can understate the length you need.
  3. Follow the chart’s toe and heel marks to read the length. Measure the left and right foot separately.
  4. Keep the longer measurement as the controlling length. If the two feet fall in different size rows, use the row for the longer foot.

Record width separately

  1. Measure the widest part of each foot as shown by the tool, usually across the forefoot near the ball of the foot.
  2. Note whether the foot spreads when standing. A width that looks acceptable while seated may press against the upper when you walk.
  3. Compare the larger width requirement with the 990v3 chart’s available B, D, 2E or 4E options for your size and region.

Write down both feet’s length and width before opening a retailer page. That prevents a familiar US number from overriding what your measurements show.

Choose the length from the exact regional chart

Use the centimetre or regional row that matches the listing rather than mixing charts from different countries. Start with the longer foot’s measurement, locate the nearest 990v3 length, and check the conversion columns if the seller uses UK or EU numbers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • At an exact chart value: begin with that length and then verify width.
  • Between two chart values: New Balance’s measuring guidance says to choose the larger size.
  • One foot longer: choose the size that accommodates the longer foot; manage the extra room on the shorter foot with lacing or an appropriate insole rather than forcing the longer foot into a short shoe.
  • Different chart systems: convert through the 990v3 table. Do not treat men’s/unisex US 9 as women’s US 9; the official example is women’s US 10.5.

Leave enough space for the toes to move without allowing the foot to slide forward. The exact amount of visible space depends on your foot shape and socks, so the chart and a standing try-on are more useful than a universal toe-gap number.

Choose the width from pressure and volume

Signs the width is too narrow

  • Pressure is concentrated at the ball of the foot or little-toe side even though the toe length is correct.
  • The upper bulges over the sides or your toes feel squeezed together while standing.
  • Numbness, tingling or hot spots appear across the forefoot during a short walk.

If the length is otherwise correct, compare the next available width, such as D to 2E, before moving to a longer half size. A wider option preserves the intended heel-to-toe position while adding forefoot room.

Signs the width is too roomy

  • Your foot slides side to side while the laces are comfortably tightened.
  • The upper creases excessively because the foot is not filling it.
  • You must overtighten the laces to keep the heel from lifting.

Try the narrower available width at the same length. If the heel still slips, check lacing and sock thickness before changing length; a longer shoe can increase forward movement.

When volume, not width, is the issue

Some feet need more space over the top rather than more room at the widest point. If the sides feel fine but the tongue or eyelets press on the instep, try a different lacing pattern or a slightly roomier width if offered. Do not size up solely because the top of the foot feels compressed; the extra length may create heel movement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to do when you are between sizes

Follow the official measuring-tool rule: choose the larger size when your measurement falls between rows or one foot is longer. This is a sizing decision, not a guarantee that the larger shoe will feel perfect in every width.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
  1. Confirm that the measurement was taken standing, late in the afternoon and at 100% print scale.
  2. Use the longer foot’s value and select the larger adjacent length.
  3. Recheck width. If the larger length solves toe contact but leaves excessive side space, compare the wider or narrower width offered at the nearer length instead of assuming the half size is the only solution.
  4. Use normal walking to check heel hold and forefoot pressure. A shoe that feels loose only because you are wearing unusually thin socks should be tested again with your normal socks.

Do not deliberately size down to make a loose heel feel secure. A short shoe can cause toe contact and pressure that become more noticeable after feet swell.

Try-on procedure for a confident fit

  1. Try both shoes, preferably late in the day, with your intended socks and any removable insole you normally use.
  2. Stand with your full weight on both feet. Check that the longest toe is not touching the front and that the forefoot is not pressing against the sidewall.
  3. Walk, turn and use stairs if available. Watch for heel lift, sliding, rubbing or pressure that appears only when the foot bends.
  4. Retie the laces using moderate tension. The shoe should hold the heel without crushing the instep or forcing the toes together.
  5. Compare left and right sensations. The smaller foot may have a little extra room; the longer foot must remain comfortable.

If uncertainty remains, New Balance advises trying the shoe on or visiting a New Balance store for a professional fitting. A fitter can check both length and width while you stand and walk, which an online measurement cannot fully reproduce.

Buying online: a practical checklist

  • Verify the product title says 990v3, not another 990 generation.
  • Confirm whether the page uses men’s/unisex or women’s sizing.
  • Open the size-and-width chart attached to that regional listing; do not rely on a generic chart copied by a marketplace seller.
  • Check that your chosen width is offered in the specific colorway. The 990v3 chart lists B, D, 2E and 4E, but a particular color or size run may not include all four.
  • Read the seller’s return conditions before wearing the shoes outdoors. Keep the packaging until length and width are confirmed.
  • Save a screenshot of the selected size, width and conversion row. This helps catch a men’s/unisex-versus-women’s mismatch at checkout.

Stock changes by region and colorway, so no width should be treated as universally available. If the correct width is unavailable, waiting for that width or choosing another listing is safer than compensating with an unsuitable length.

Troubleshoot common fit problems

Symptom Likely cause First correction
Toes touch the front Length is too short, or feet have swollen after extended wear Recheck the longer foot and move to the next length; do not solve this with width alone.
Little toe is squeezed but front space is adequate Width is too narrow Try the next available width at the same length.
Heel slips while the forefoot feels correct Lacing, sock or volume mismatch Use a secure heel-lock lacing pattern and normal socks before increasing length; if it persists, test a narrower width.
Instep feels pressed Insufficient upper volume or overly tight lacing Loosen the middle eyelets or try a roomier width; avoid an unnecessary length increase.
Foot moves side to side Width is too roomy Try a narrower width or adjust lacing; a smaller length is not automatically the answer.
One foot is comfortable and the other is cramped Normal left-right size difference Fit the longer or wider foot and use an insole or lacing adjustment for the smaller foot.

Persistent numbness, sharp pain, or rubbing that creates a blister is a reason to stop wearing the pair and reassess the size, width and sock combination. Do not expect a painful fit to “break in” safely.

How much weight to give online fit reports

Online owner comments can reveal recurring impressions, but they are not a substitute for the chart or a fitting. Feetlot’s guide describes 33 owner-reported 990v3 pairs and reports a generally true-to-size impression. That is a small, self-reported sample with no controlled measurement method, so it cannot establish a population-wide fit rate or override your own length and width measurements.

Variation in reviews is normal because wearers use different socks, insoles, widths, foot shapes and regional size conventions. Treat “true to size” as a starting point: compare the reviewer’s width and sizing system with yours, then verify against the official 990v3 chart.

Final decision framework

  1. Measure: print at 100%, verify scale, measure both feet standing in the late afternoon, and record length plus forefoot width.
  2. Select length: use the longer foot and the exact regional 990v3 chart. Choose the larger length if between values.
  3. Select width: match side pressure or excess space to B, D, 2E or 4E where that width is offered.
  4. Verify conversion: remember that the model is men’s/unisex; men’s US 9 converts to women’s US 10.5, UK 8.5, EU 43 and 27.5 cm on the official chart.
  5. Test the pair: try both shoes with normal socks, walk and turn, and check heel hold, toe clearance and forefoot pressure.
  6. Escalate uncertainty: use a New Balance store’s professional fitting when measurements and try-on do not resolve the choice.

The best 990v3 size is therefore not a universally recommended half size. It is the length that accommodates your longer foot, paired with the width that matches your forefoot, verified against the chart for the exact listing and confirmed by a standing, walking try-on whenever possible.
