The ranges overlap, so height alone does not select one size for riders at 167–170 cm or 175–177 cm. If you are in an overlap, compare both frames in a Halfords Bikehut store and choose the one that gives safe standover clearance, comfortable handlebar reach and a natural riding position.
The current Carrera Subway-E 2 size chart
The current Halfords chart lists three frame choices. The inch figures below are the chart’s frame labels; they are not a substitute for checking how the bicycle fits your body.

| Chart size | Frame label | Rider height listed by Halfords |
|---|---|---|
| S | 16-inch | 160–170 cm |
| M | 18-inch | 167–177 cm |
| L | 19-inch | 175–188 cm |
These are overlapping recommendations rather than three completely separate bands. S and M both include 167–170 cm. M and L both include 175–177 cm. At those heights, the chart identifies two plausible sizes; it does not prove that one is universally correct.

Why height is only the first screening step
A height chart is useful for narrowing the choice, but it cannot show whether you can stand over the frame, reach the bars without locking your elbows or maintain a comfortable posture. Body proportions, shoes, flexibility and your preferred riding position all affect those checks.
The Carrera/Halfords owner’s manual puts the safety consequence plainly: “If your bicycle does not fit properly, you may lose control and fall.” Treat that as a reason to verify the fit before riding, not as a reason to guess between two overlapping sizes.
The manual also says that fit affects safety, performance and comfort. Its general guidance is to straddle the bicycle in the shoes you will ride in and look for at least two inches (50 mm) of clearance. That manual predates the current Subway-E 2 and is a generic Carrera guide, so use the 50 mm figure as general guidance and ask Halfords to confirm the fit for this particular model.

1. Measure your height consistently
Measure without shoes, standing upright on a level floor with your heels against a wall. Keep your head level and have someone mark the highest point of your head, then measure from the floor to the mark. Record centimetres, because that is how the current chart is expressed. If your measurement is close to a boundary, repeat it rather than rounding several centimetres up or down.
Use the result to identify every chart size that includes your height. Do not discard the second option when you are in an overlap: at 167–170 cm, list both S and M; at 175–177 cm, list both M and L.
2. Check the exact model and chart
Before visiting a store or ordering, make sure the listing says Carrera Subway-E 2 and displays the current S/M/L chart. A page for an older Subway E 2.0 can show other labels or ranges. Save or photograph the chart you used so you can compare it with the frame markings at the store.

3. Compare both candidate frames in riding shoes
If your height falls in an overlap, ask to stand over both sizes. Wear the shoes you normally use for cycling. Stand with both feet on the ground and the bicycle upright. Check for clear space between you and the top tube; the generic manual’s benchmark is at least 50 mm. A store employee can hold the bicycle steady while you move into a normal riding position.

4. Check reach to the handlebars
Place your hands on the grips as you would while riding. Your shoulders should feel relaxed, your elbows should not be forced straight and you should not have to slide forward on the saddle to reach the controls. A frame that feels too long can make your neck, shoulders and hands uncomfortable; a frame that feels too short can leave you cramped. These are fit observations, not measurements published for the Subway-E 2, so use your comfort and control as the decision criteria.
5. Assess the riding posture
A 2026 T3 review describes the Subway-E 2’s geometry and handlebar setup as encouraging a more forward posture than a typical upright hybrid. That is a reviewer’s observation, not a separate size rule. Sit on each candidate and decide whether that forward position suits your back, wrists, visibility and intended trips. If you prefer an especially upright position, tell the store staff before choosing; do not assume that moving to a smaller frame automatically creates the posture you want.
6. Take a controlled test ride when possible
Ride both candidate sizes at low speed in the store’s approved area or on a supervised test route. Start, stop, turn and look over each shoulder. You should be able to keep the bicycle stable without stretching for the bars or knocking the frame when you stop. Pay attention to whether your feet can reach the ground comfortably when you dismount, while remembering that stopping with one foot down is normal on a correctly fitted bicycle.
7. Have the store confirm the choice before you ride away
Ask the Bikehut team to check saddle height, handlebar position and overall control on the selected frame. If a new bicycle does not fit, the owner’s manual advises asking a Halfords Bikehut store to exchange it before riding it. Do not rely on a short ride to “break in” a frame that already feels unsafe or clearly too large.

What each chart size means
S: 16-inch frame, 160–170 cm
S is the only chart choice for riders from 160 through 166 cm. It remains a valid option through 170 cm, where it overlaps M. In the overlap, S may feel easier to stand over or more compact, but the chart does not establish that outcome for every rider. Confirm the handlebar reach and your preferred posture in person.

M: 18-inch frame, 167–177 cm
M is the only chart choice for 171–174 cm. It is also one of the two listed choices at 167–170 cm and 175–177 cm. At either edge, compare it directly with the neighbouring size rather than selecting it merely because it is the middle option.
L: 19-inch frame, 175–188 cm
L is the only chart choice for 178–188 cm. It is also listed alongside M for 175–177 cm. Riders at the lower end should pay particular attention to standover clearance and reach before accepting L; riders at the upper end should still verify that the bars and saddle can be set comfortably by the store.
Which size applies at your height?
| Your measured height | Sizes listed by the current chart | How to decide |
|---|---|---|
| 160–166 cm | S | Check standover and reach on S before purchase. |
| 167–170 cm | S or M | Stand over and test both; choose the frame with safer clearance and more comfortable reach. |
| 171–174 cm | M | Confirm the riding position and controls on M. |
| 175–177 cm | M or L | Compare both frames in person, including posture and standover. |
| 178–188 cm | L | Check that the saddle and bars can be adjusted comfortably by the store. |
The table simply expands the published ranges; it does not create an additional inseam rule. How to perform the fit checks safely
Standover clearance
With the bicycle upright, straddle the top tube in your cycling shoes and keep both feet flat. You should have visible clearance rather than resting your body on the frame. The generic manual suggests at least two inches (50 mm). Ask the store staff to confirm how that guidance applies to the Subway-E 2’s current frame design, because the figure is not a model-specific measurement.
Reach and steering control
From the saddle, hold the normal grips and operate the brake levers. You should be able to do so without sliding forward, rounding your shoulders sharply or locking your elbows. Turn the bars through the normal steering range while stationary and make sure your knees, hands and cables are not interfering. A shop employee should make any adjustment; do not alter components beyond their marked limits.
Saddle and pedal position
Ask for the saddle to be set for a proper leg position before judging the frame. A saddle that is too low can make a suitable frame feel cramped, while a saddle that is too high can make stopping awkward. The correct setting is part of the store’s fit check, not a reason to choose a different chart size by itself.

Starting and stopping
During a test ride, start with the pedal in a position that lets you push away smoothly. Practise a controlled stop and dismount. You should not need to lean the bicycle excessively or strike the top tube. If either candidate feels unstable, tell the staff and stop the test rather than trying to compensate with speed.
What to do when the two sizes both feel plausible
Some riders can make either overlapping size work after professional adjustment. The choice should then follow the frame that gives you the most reliable control in your normal use, not an assumption that a larger or smaller frame is always better.
- Choose the frame on which you can meet the standover check without hesitation.
- Prefer the one that lets you reach the brake levers with relaxed shoulders and slightly bent elbows.
- Use your intended posture as a deciding factor: the Subway-E 2 may feel more forward than an upright hybrid, according to the T3 review.
- Consider where you will ride. Frequent stops, traffic and uneven surfaces make easy mounting, dismounting and confident steering especially important.
- Ask the same staff member to compare saddle and handlebar settings on both frames, so an incorrectly adjusted test bike does not decide the result.
If one frame meets the checks and the other requires you to tolerate contact, excessive reach or a strained posture, the comfortable frame is the safer choice even when both are inside the chart’s height range.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes to avoid
Picking solely by height at an overlap
At 168 cm, for example, both S and M are listed. Choosing M simply because it is the larger number, or S because it is the smaller frame, ignores the fit checks that the overlap requires.
Using an old Subway E 2.0 chart
Older pages can show different frame names and height bands. Mixing those numbers with the current Subway-E 2 listing can put you on the wrong size. Verify the exact model year and current Halfords chart first.
Assuming a smaller frame automatically means upright
Frame size and handlebar setup are related but not identical. The T3 review’s forward-posture observation applies to the model’s geometry and cockpit, not to a guarantee that S, M or L will suit a particular back or shoulder position.

Ignoring shoes and clothing
Try the bicycle in the shoes you will actually ride in. Bulky clothing can also change how easily you can straddle and dismount, so wear a normal riding outfit when you make the final check.
Riding first and asking for an exchange later
The manual advises dealing with a poor fit through a Bikehut store before riding a new bicycle. Complete the fit check and any exchange decision before your first trip.
When to ask Halfords for a second opinion
Ask a Bikehut technician to reassess the bicycle if you cannot obtain the general standover clearance, if your hands go numb during a short supervised ride, if you must lock your elbows to reach the bars, or if you feel unstable when starting and stopping. Those symptoms do not identify a particular frame size by themselves, but they are clear reasons not to accept the setup without help.
Bring your measured height, the chart you used and a description of your normal rides. Tell the technician whether you favour an upright or more forward posture. The goal is a bicycle you can control comfortably, not simply one whose label contains your height.
Quick decision checklist
- Have I measured my height in centimetres without shoes?
- Am I using the current Subway-E 2 chart rather than an older Subway E 2.0 page?
- Does my height fall in an overlap that requires comparing two sizes?
- Can I straddle the bicycle in riding shoes with the general 50 mm clearance guidance in mind?
- Can I reach the grips and brake levers with relaxed shoulders and controlled elbows?
- Does the model’s more forward reported posture feel comfortable for my back, wrists and visibility?
- Have I tested starting, stopping and turning on the actual frame?
- Has Halfords Bikehut confirmed the setup, and have I arranged an exchange before riding if it does not fit?
Bottom line for each height band
Use S at 160–166 cm, M at 171–174 cm and L at 178–188 cm as the chart’s unambiguous starting points. At 167–170 cm, compare S and M; at 175–177 cm, compare M and L. The final decision should come from standover clearance, reach, control and riding posture on the current bicycle, with Halfords confirming the fit before you ride.
