Age and labels such as XS or S are only guides: brands use different ranges, so there is no reliable universal conversion.
Which measurements matter for a T-shirt?
Start with chest measurement because it is the most relevant check for a top. Use height as a second reference: official Nike, adidas, and Reebok charts pair height ranges with chest measurements, but their labels and ranges differ.

Measure the chest
- Have the child stand naturally, with arms relaxed.
- Wrap a soft tape measure around the fullest part of the chest, keeping it horizontal, as Nike’s Kids’ Clothing Size Chart instructs.
- Record the measurement without pulling the tape tight, then compare it with the chart for the exact brand or product.
Check height
Measure the child’s height and compare it with the same chart. If chest and height appear to point to different sizes, consult the brand’s instructions for tops; Nike says to use the chest measurement when chest and hip measurements indicate different sizes.
Why you should use the T-shirt’s own size chart
Brand size labels are not standardized. Nike’s chart includes age, numeric size, height, and chest; adidas separates youth and teen stages and uses age-style and alpha labels; Reebok lists sizes from 3T through XL. Treat each chart as a separate guide, not as a conversion system for other brands.

For example, Nike lists Kids’ XS as numeric 6–7, age 7–8, height 48–50 inches, and chest 24–25.5 inches. Its S is numeric 8–9, age 8–10, height 50–54 inches, and chest 25.5–27.5 inches. These figures describe Nike’s chart, not a universal XS or S fit. Nike also lists plus-fit options.
Other charts use different ranges. adidas’s youth and teen chart shows chest examples from 25 inches for ages 7–8 to 36 inches for ages 15–16. Reebok lists XS for ages 7–8 with height 49–50 inches and chest 25 inches, and S for ages 9–10 with height 54–55 inches and chest 27–28 inches. Check the current adidas Kids Clothing Size Chart or Reebok Kids’ Clothing Size Guide directly before choosing; these examples should not be used to translate one brand’s size into another’s.

What if your child is between sizes?
Choose according to the fit you want. Nike advises ordering the smaller size for a tighter fit or the larger size for a looser fit when a body measurement falls on the borderline between two sizes. Apply that advice within Nike’s chart; for another brand, follow its own guidance if provided.

- For a closer fit, choose the smaller of the adjacent sizes if the child’s measurements still fall within that size’s chart range.
- For a roomier fit, choose the larger size, especially if the child’s chest is near the upper edge of the smaller range.
- If measurements do not fit neatly into a chart, check the listing’s product-specific guidance rather than assuming the age label resolves the mismatch.
A quick way to choose
- Find the size chart on the product listing or the brand’s official sizing page.
- Measure chest at its fullest part with the tape level; measure height as a cross-check.
- Match the measurements to that chart’s ranges, prioritizing chest for a T-shirt.
- If between sizes, choose smaller for a tighter fit or larger for a looser fit when the brand offers that guidance.
- Recheck the chart on the exact listing before ordering, since brand charts and product sizing can change.
What size labels cannot tell you
An age label is not a substitute for measurements, and an XS or S from one brand does not guarantee the same fit in another. The cited charts provide body measurement ranges; they do not establish garment dimensions, fabric stretch, or how a particular shirt will fit after washing. Use the listing’s specific chart where available.
