Why the product-specific chart matters
Graphic T-shirts are not sized by one universal chart. A size label such as M or L does not guarantee the same chest, length, or shoulder measurements across brands, product lines, blanks, or cuts. Even two shirts sold by the same retailer may use different sizing information if one is fitted and another is relaxed or oversized.

Open the guide attached to the exact product listing, not just a general brand chart. Check whether it applies to the shirt’s particular style, blank, fit, and region. If the listing identifies a collection or blank, make sure the chart covers it. When the product page and general chart appear to differ, the product-specific information is the more relevant starting point; if it still is not clear which dimensions apply, ask the seller before ordering.

Retailer guides illustrate why this check matters, but their instructions are not universal standards. Redbubble’s Help Center article, updated April 11, 2025, says, “Most of the T-shirts offered on Redbubble use flat lay measurements for sizing.” It directs shoppers to the individual product guide and notes that fitted and relaxed collections have their own size information. Jockey India likewise advises using actual chest, shoulder, and length measurements against a well-fitting tee, but its chart is for Jockey products. Neither chart should be treated as a conversion guide for other sellers.

- Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
Before measuring, look for the product name or collection on the chart and check the chart’s notes. A general brand chart may describe one product family, while the listing may be for a different cut or blank. The useful question is not simply “What is my usual size?” but “Which listed garment dimensions belong to this exact shirt?” If the page does not make that clear, asking the seller is safer than applying a chart from another product.
Measure a T-shirt you already like
The most useful comparison is usually a shirt whose fit you already know. It translates a preference such as “not tight across the chest” or “long enough to cover the waistband” into garment dimensions. Use a shirt similar in general style if possible: a close-fitting tee may not be a useful reference for choosing an intentionally oversized graphic shirt.
- Lay it flat. Smooth the shirt on a flat surface without stretching the fabric. Align the body so it is not twisted or folded under itself. Measure the garment in its natural, relaxed state.
- Measure chest width. Measure straight across from one armpit seam to the other. Keep the tape or ruler level and measure the garment, not around your own body. This is often called pit-to-pit or flat chest width.
- Measure body length. Measure from the high shoulder point near the collar down to the bottom hem. Keep the measurement path consistent when comparing shirts. Do not substitute a different start point just because another chart uses a different wording; clarify the chart’s method if the start point is unclear.
- Measure shoulders if useful. If the product chart lists shoulder width, measure across the shoulder seams on your reference tee and compare that dimension too. It can help distinguish between shirts with similar chest measurements but different shoulder proportions.
- Write down the measurements and fit. Note the chest, length, and shoulder figures, plus whether the shirt feels close, regular, relaxed, or oversized on you. Those notes help you choose among plausible options instead of relying on memory.
A flexible measuring tape is convenient, but a ruler can work for a flat garment measurement. You do not need to measure your body if you are comparing the product chart with a shirt that already fits the way you want. If you use a ruler, keep it straight and level across the garment; the goal is a comparable garment measurement, not a precise body measurement.

The aim is consistency between your reference tee and the product chart, not a claim that every garment is manufactured to exactly the same dimension. If you have several shirts you like, measuring more than one can clarify the range of dimensions that works for you. Keep their fit labels in mind: a relaxed tee and a close tee can both be comfortable for different reasons.
Make sure the reference shirt is laid flat without stretching it. Pulling the fabric taut can make the measurement larger than the shirt’s resting dimension; leaving a fold underneath can make it smaller. A twisted body or uneven hem can also undermine the comparison. These simple setup checks help you avoid choosing a size based on a measurement that does not represent the shirt you actually wear.
Make sure chest measurements are comparable
“Chest” can describe two different measurements. A flat pit-to-pit measurement is the width of the shirt laid flat from one armpit to the other. A full chest measurement is the circumference around the garment’s chest. Compare like with like: a flat width should be checked against another flat width, and a circumference against a circumference.

| Chart measurement | What it describes | How to compare it |
|---|---|---|
| Flat chest width or pit-to-pit | The straight-line width across the shirt from one armpit to the other when laid flat. | Compare it with the same across-the-shirt measurement on your reference tee. |
| Full chest circumference | The measurement around the garment’s chest. | Compare with a circumference measurement. If your reference is a flat pit-to-pit width, double that width for a like-for-like comparison. |
For example, if a reference tee measures 20 inches across from armpit to armpit, its corresponding full circumference is 40 inches. This is a simple conversion, not a recommendation about how much room a shirt should have. The sources do not establish a universal ease allowance, so choose based on the desired fit and the product’s cut rather than adding a fixed number to every chest measurement.

Do not compare a 20-inch flat width directly with a chart’s 40-inch circumference and conclude that the product is twice as large. They describe the same approximate chest dimension in two different ways. Conversely, do not double a chart value if that chart already describes a circumference. Read its labels and notes before doing any conversion.
If the chart does not explain whether its chest figure is flat width or circumference, do not guess from the number alone. Check the chart notes or ask the seller to clarify. A mismatch in measurement method can make two apparently similar figures incomparable. When asking, be specific: ask whether the listed chest number is measured pit-to-pit on a flat garment or around the garment.
Compare the measurements and the cut
Use chest and length together. A shirt that matches your preferred chest width may still be too short or too long. Include shoulder width when the seller lists it, especially if shoulder fit is important to you. Compare the product’s measurements with the reference shirt and then consider the stated cut: fitted, regular, relaxed, or oversized.
- For a closer fit: Look for a product whose measurements and stated cut align with the closer-fitting shirt you use as a reference. Do not assume that choosing a smaller letter will work the same way across brands.
- For a regular fit: Favor dimensions close to a reference tee you consider comfortably ordinary, while checking that its listed cut is also regular or comparable.
- For a relaxed fit: Look for a relaxed cut or compare against a shirt that already gives you that silhouette. A seller may define its fit in relation to its own blank or collection.
- For an oversized fit: Prefer a product described as oversized if that is the intended shape. Sizing up a regular-cut shirt does not necessarily reproduce an intentional oversized silhouette; proportions such as length and shoulders may differ as well as chest width.
When two sizes seem plausible, make a side-by-side comparison rather than choosing by letter. Check chest width or circumference, body length, and shoulder width where available. Decide which difference matters most for your intended fit. If one size has the preferred chest but the other has the preferred length, the better choice depends on which dimension is less negotiable for you.

For each candidate, compare chest, length, and shoulders separately. This makes trade-offs visible: one size may be closer in chest while another is closer in length. Available retailer guides do not establish a universal formula for combining those differences, so use your own reference and priorities rather than averaging the dimensions or relying on a fixed rule.

Also compare the cut label before deciding that a numerical match will produce the same silhouette. A relaxed or oversized shape can differ in more than chest width. A size-up in a regular cut may add length or shoulder width in a way you do not want, while an intentionally oversized product may be designed with different proportions. The relevant combination is the stated cut plus the measurements, not either one by itself.
Honeyshirt’s guide offers a specific example of why the blank and store matter: it says its chart applies to products using the classic heavyweight cotton Gildan 5000 blank in its print partner’s catalog. It describes a unisex straight cut and advises going up for a relaxed fit or layering and down for a closer fit. Those suggestions belong to the products and blank covered by that guide. They are not a general sizing formula for other graphic tees or blanks.
Account for the seller’s measurement tolerance
A published garment measurement may allow some variation. Redbubble’s Help Center guide, updated April 11, 2025, states a tolerance of ±1 inch for the measurements in its guide. That qualification belongs to Redbubble’s chart; it is not a universal tolerance for graphic T-shirts. Check the current product information for the seller’s own tolerance, if any.
If a listed tolerance is relevant to a close choice, consider the possible range around the chart figure rather than treating it as an exact measurement. For example, a size listed at 20 inches with a stated ±1-inch tolerance could measure between 19 and 21 inches under that stated allowance. This is only an illustration of how a stated tolerance works, not an estimate for sellers that publish no tolerance. If that possible range would change your decision, choose a size with more room for variation or ask the retailer for guidance.
A tolerance is not an instruction to add or subtract a fixed amount when selecting a size. It describes variation around a stated measurement, where the seller has published such an allowance. It is particularly worth noticing when two candidate sizes are close to your reference tee: the apparent difference between the chart values may be smaller than the allowed variation. Available retailer guides do not provide a way to predict which way a particular shirt will vary, so do not treat the stated range as a guaranteed measurement for your order.
Check region, exchanges, and product notes before checkout
Look for regional sizing information on the listing. Redbubble’s April 11, 2025 help article warns that international product sizes may vary. That warning is specific to its products, but it is a reason not to infer a regional conversion from a size letter alone. Use the measurements attached to the product and confirm which region or sizing information they describe.

Review the current exchange or return terms for the specific seller and product before paying, particularly when the chart leaves a close call. Policies belong to the retailer and can change. For example, Honeyshirt’s guide, last updated October 2, 2026, reports that its store offers exchanges within 60 days of delivery. That is a Honeyshirt policy as described in that guide, not a general rule for online T-shirt purchases. Check the current terms on the store where you are buying rather than assuming another retailer offers the same period or conditions.
Honeyshirt also describes its chart as applying to products using the classic heavyweight cotton Gildan 5000 blank in its print partner’s catalog. It characterizes that blank’s fit as unisex and straight cut, advises going up for a relaxed fit or layering and down for a closer fit, and presents those suggestions in the context of its own products. Treat them as store- and blank-specific guidance, not as instructions for every graphic tee.
Before checkout, look for the information that can change your decision: which chart applies, how chest is measured, whether there is a stated tolerance, what region the sizing refers to, and what the current exchange policy says. You may not need every detail for every purchase, but missing clarity on a key dimension is a reason to pause and ask the retailer. A policy example from another store does not tell you what your seller will allow.

- Open the chart for the exact product and verify that it covers the style, blank, cut, and region listed.
- Measure a shirt you like while it is laid flat: armpit-to-armpit chest, high-shoulder-point-to-hem length, and shoulders if the chart includes them.
- Confirm whether the product’s chest figure is flat width or full circumference. Convert only when necessary by doubling a flat width to compare it with a circumference.
- Compare the actual dimensions, not just the S/M/L label. Choose the measurements that best match your preferred silhouette and prioritize the dimensions that matter most to you.
- Read the product notes for tolerance and check the seller’s current regional and exchange information. Ask the seller if a chart dimension or policy is unclear.
If you are still between two sizes, return to the reference shirt and compare the candidate measurements directly. Ask yourself whether chest, length, or shoulders would matter most if the garment differs from the reference. Then check that the cut label supports the look you want. There is no broadly available guidance that says to always size up, size down, or choose the larger option when unsure.
What sizing charts cannot guarantee
A chart is a practical guide, not a guarantee that a shirt will fit exactly as expected. Retailer sizing guides describe their own products and methods. The cited guides do not establish a general shrinkage adjustment, a cross-brand conversion table, or a uniform definition of every chart measurement. Avoid applying a fixed shrinkage allowance or a letter-size conversion unless the product’s seller provides one for that item.
When the key information is missing, the most useful next step is a specific question to the seller: ask whether the chest measurement is flat width or circumference, whether the chart applies to the exact cut or blank, and whether a stated tolerance or regional variation affects the product. Those answers are more useful than guessing from the size label.

Likewise, do not assume that a retailer’s measurement method or fit advice transfers to another shop. Redbubble’s flat-lay guidance, Jockey India’s product chart, and Honeyshirt’s Gildan 5000 recommendations each describe their own context. The cited guides do not establish a universal apparel standard or cross-brand conversion. Use the current chart and notes for the item you intend to buy.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I choose the right size graphic T-shirt online?
Open the size guide for the exact product, then compare its chest and length measurements with a T-shirt you already own and like. Check whether the chart’s chest number is a flat pit-to-pit width or a full circumference, and consider the listed cut and your preferred fit. Do not rely on a size letter as a cross-brand conversion.
How do I check T-shirt measurements?
Lay a well-fitting shirt flat without stretching it. Measure chest from one armpit to the other, length from the high shoulder point near the collar to the hem, and shoulder width if the product chart lists it. Compare garment measurements with garment measurements, not with your body measurements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat if my shirt’s chest measurement is flat width but the chart gives circumference?
Double the flat pit-to-pit width for a like-for-like circumference comparison. For example, a 20-inch flat width corresponds to 40 inches around. Do not double a chart figure that already represents circumference, and ask the seller if the chart does not explain its method.
Should I size up for an oversized graphic tee?
Not automatically. If you want an oversized silhouette, look for a product described as oversized and compare its measurements. Sizing up a regular-cut shirt may change length and shoulders as well as chest, and may not create the same proportions.
What should I do if I am between two sizes?
Compare each candidate’s chest, length, and shoulder dimensions with the reference shirt, then prioritize the dimension that matters most to you and consider the stated cut. If a published measurement tolerance could affect the choice, factor in that range. The sources do not support a universal rule to always choose the larger or smaller size.
Are size charts and exchange policies the same across sellers?
No. The cited guides apply to particular retailers, products, blanks, or collections. Check the current chart and exchange terms for the seller and product you are buying. For example, Honeyshirt’s guide reports a 60-day exchange period for its store, but that is not a general online-shopping policy.
The Bottom Line
Use the exact product chart, compare it with a shirt you already like, and make sure chest measurements use the same format. Check length, shoulders, cut, tolerance, region, and the seller’s current exchange terms before ordering. When an important chart detail is unclear, ask the seller rather than guessing from the size letter.
