Measure the clear, flat, magnetic area of your vehicle before choosing a car sign. A 30 mil (0.030 in) magnet is the conventional thickness most consistently listed in the cited supplier pages, while sizes such as 12 × 18 in and 12 × 24 in are starting points—not universal fits.
Measure the vehicle panel before choosing a size
Measure the usable width and height of the exact area where the sign will sit. Choose dimensions that fit entirely within that area, with no part of the magnet crossing a curve, molding, seam, handle, or raised feature. Signs.com’s car-magnet instructions say: “Place the magnet on a flat magnetic vehicle surface (no curves, bumps, and no molding).” Signs.com’s instructions also call for a magnetic surface, not simply any smooth body panel.

There is no universal size that fits every vehicle. Suppliers offer several common dimensions, but their recommendations are product guidance rather than a fit chart covering all makes and models.

Check material and shape, not just the measurements
- Confirm magnetic compatibility: the contact area must be magnetic metal. A magnet will not hold to a non-magnetic surface.
- Look for uninterrupted contact: curves, molding, seams, handles, and raised areas can keep the sign from lying flat.
- Consider the outline: a simple rectangle with rounded corners can reduce exposed edges that wind might catch, according to supplier guidance. It does not guarantee that a sign will stay attached.
Choose thickness by comparing the actual product
Hadrus, Signs.com, and Squaresigns list conventional vehicle magnets at 30 mil (0.030 in) on their current product or guidance pages, which were accessed on October 4, 2026; publication years are not stated. This makes 30 mil a useful baseline when comparing conventional car-sign products, but it does not mean every magnet of that thickness has identical holding performance or suits every vehicle and use.

Fit and maintain the sign safely
- Clean and dry both surfaces. Before application, clean the sign and the vehicle area so dirt does not interfere with contact.
- Place it flat. Check that the whole sign lies against the compatible metal panel rather than spanning a curve, molding, or raised feature.
- Remove and clean underneath regularly. Signs.com advises taking the magnet off regularly to clean beneath it. FASTSIGNS advises checking behind the sign weekly; product details may vary by location. Follow the instructions supplied with your specific magnet. Signs.com; FASTSIGNS
- Remove it before washing. Signs.com advises removing magnets before mechanical car washes or power washing. Follow any more specific care directions from the product supplier. Signs.com
Supplier guidance does not establish one universally safe size, thickness, or driving speed for every vehicle and sign. Use the product’s instructions and check that it remains flat and in place.
