How to choose the right Sentinel satellite data for ocean, land, or climate research

Choose a Sentinel mission by the variable you need to measure, not by the satellite number. Use Sentinel-1 for all-weather, day-and-night radar observations; Sentinel-2 for multispectral, high-resolution land imagery; Sentinel-3 for ocean colour, land reflectance, temperature, topography and vegetation products; Sentinel-5P for atmospheric composition; and Sentinel-6 for global sea-surface height. Then select a product level that matches your processing skills and the form of data your analysis requires.

Resolution, revisit, coverage, latency and quality flags are product-specific. Confirm them in the current technical documentation and catalogue entry for your study area, dates and variable before downloading data.

Start with the research variable

A satellite mission is a measurement system, not a generic image source. Optical reflectance, radar backscatter, ocean colour, trace-gas concentration and sea-surface height are different observables. A sound selection begins by writing down the quantity your model or analysis needs.

  • Land cover, vegetation, soil, inland water or coastal reflectance: begin with Sentinel-2.
  • Land or ocean observations through cloud, at night or where radar response is scientifically useful: begin with Sentinel-1.
  • Ocean colour, land reflectance, sea or land temperature, topography or broad vegetation products: begin with Sentinel-3 and select the relevant instrument chain.
  • Air quality, trace gases or atmospheric aerosols: begin with Sentinel-5P.
  • Sea-surface height, operational oceanography or climate-scale altimetry: begin with Sentinel-6.

These are starting points, not interchangeable collections. A Sentinel-1 radar measurement cannot be substituted for a Sentinel-2 optical reflectance measurement, and a Sentinel-3 ocean-colour product is not the same kind of observation as a Sentinel-6 height measurement.

Sentinel-1: radar for land and ocean

When Sentinel-1 is the right fit

Sentinel-1 is the choice when the signal you need is radar backscatter rather than reflected sunlight, or when observation must continue in darkness or cloud. ESA describes the mission as all-weather, day-and-night radar imaging for land and ocean. That makes it useful for applications in which optical imagery is intermittently unavailable, and for phenomena whose interaction with a microwave signal is itself informative.

For ocean work, Sentinel-1 supports systematically distributed Level-2 products for wind, waves and currents. For land work, the radar image can reveal structure and surface change that is physically different from a multispectral colour or vegetation index. You must therefore define whether your analysis uses backscatter, a derived ocean variable or another radar observable before selecting a product.

Understand the Sentinel-1 processing levels

Level ESA definition Use it when
Level-0 Compressed, unfocused raw data You are developing or operating a specialist processor that needs instrument-level samples.
Level-1 SLC Focused and georeferenced using orbit and attitude data; retained in slant-range geometry You need complex focused data, including phase information, and can work in slant-range geometry.
Level-1 GRD Focused, detected, multilooked and projected to ground range You need detected ground-range imagery rather than complex SLC data.
Level-2 Systematically distributed ocean products for wind, wave and current applications Your analysis requires a higher-level ocean geophysical variable instead of radar imagery.

These definitions are specific to Sentinel-1. Do not assume that a Level-1 or Level-2 label has the same contents across every Sentinel mission. Check the product handbook, metadata and quality flags for the exact collection.

Sentinel-1 decisions that are easy to get wrong

  • Optical versus radar: a radar scene is not a substitute for a cloud-free optical scene. It records a different physical response.
  • Mode and polarization: the acquisition mode and polarization affect the information available and must match the target phenomenon.
  • Geometry: SLC remains in slant-range geometry, while GRD is projected to ground range. Mixing them without an explicit geometric plan can invalidate a time series.
  • Ocean product status: confirm whether a distributed Level-2 product is final, provisional or otherwise quality-controlled for your period of interest.

Sentinel-2: multispectral land monitoring

What Sentinel-2 is designed to observe

Sentinel-2 is ESA’s multispectral, high-resolution land-monitoring mission. It is the natural first choice for land cover, vegetation, soil, inland water and many coastal-imaging questions that depend on optical reflectance. Typical workflows derive spectral composites, classification features or vegetation and water indicators from its bands.

The mission label alone does not tell you which bands, spatial resolution, cloud screening or processing level is appropriate. A crop-monitoring study, a shoreline map and a land-cover classification can require different band combinations and quality tests. Read the product specification for the collection and processing baseline you intend to use.

Questions to answer before downloading Sentinel-2

  1. Which spectral information is required? List the bands or spectral regions needed by the algorithm instead of downloading every available layer by default.
  2. What is the acceptable cloud and haze level? Decide whether you will use provider quality masks, your own cloud classifier or both.
  3. What geometry and correction does the workflow require? Confirm the product level and whether the analysis expects imagery that has already been orthorectified or otherwise corrected.
  4. What temporal sampling is needed? Check catalogue coverage and acquisition dates for the study area; a nominal mission capability does not guarantee a usable observation on every date.

The available evidence does not establish a single set of numeric Sentinel-2 bands, resolutions or revisit values for every product. Treat those as collection-specific specifications, not universal properties of the mission.

Sentinel-3: match the instrument to the observable

Why Sentinel-3 is not one interchangeable image stream

Sentinel-3 combines several instrument and processing chains. Its products address ocean colour, land reflectance, sea and land temperature, ocean and land topography and vegetation. The relevant chains include the Sea and Land Surface Temperature Radiometer (SLSTR), the Ocean and Land Colour Instrument (OLCI), the Synthetic Aperture Radar Altimeter (SRAL), and combined SLSTR/OLCI products.

Choose the chain by the measured variable. OLCI-related products are relevant when the research question is ocean colour or related reflectance; SLSTR supports sea- and land-surface-temperature work; SRAL addresses topography; combined products can support workflows that intentionally use multiple observables. Do not treat a Sentinel-3 catalogue result as a generic picture without checking which instrument produced it.

Sentinel-3 selection checklist

  • State whether the target is colour or reflectance, temperature, topography or vegetation.
  • Identify the instrument and processing chain in the product name and metadata.
  • Check whether the product is an image, radiance or derived geophysical variable.
  • Inspect quality flags, calibration and validation notes before building a time series.
  • Confirm the current catalogue’s spatial and temporal coverage for your region and period.

ESA describes Sentinel-3 core products as typically available within three hours of sensing, but that is a service and product characteristic, not a guarantee that every derived product or reprocessed archive has the same timing.

Sentinel-5P: atmospheric composition and air quality

What the mission provides

Sentinel-5P is the atmospheric-composition option in this group. Its Level-2 products contain atmospheric geophysical parameters, including ozone, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, formaldehyde and carbon monoxide, as well as ozone profiles and cloud or aerosol distributions. Level-1B contains geolocated, radiometrically corrected top-of-atmosphere radiances and solar irradiances.

Use Level-1B when your work requires the corrected radiance measurements and a retrieval or specialist processing chain. Use Level-2 when you need the atmospheric parameter supplied by the mission processor and its associated quality information.

Near-real-time versus non-time-critical processing

Processing option Best for Trade-off
Near-real-time (NRT) Level-2 Operational monitoring, alerts and analyses where speed matters Short latency can leave less time for additional calibration and retrieval refinement.
Non-time-critical (NTC) processing Research requiring the most complete calibration and trace-gas retrieval steps available for the collection Data arrive later, with more relaxed timing and data-availability constraints.

ESA describes NRT Level-2 products as covering ozone, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide, ozone profiles and cloud or aerosol distributions, with NRT supply typically within three hours after sensing. Confirm the current product status and quality flags in the catalogue because processing baselines can change.

Sentinel-6: sea-surface height

Sentinel-6 uses a radar altimeter to measure global sea-surface height. It is the focused starting point for studies of ocean topography, operational oceanography and climate signals expressed through changes in sea level. This is a fundamentally different observable from Sentinel-1 ocean backscatter, Sentinel-3 ocean colour or Sentinel-5P atmospheric composition.

Before downloading, define whether you need a near-real-time operational stream, a reprocessed climate record or a validated research product. Then consult the mission-specific product definition and validation material for corrections, quality flags, reference conventions and the temporal span relevant to your analysis. The general mission name does not establish the numeric specifications of each Sentinel-6 product.

How to choose the processing level

Processing level determines what you receive and how much scientific preparation remains. A raw or radiance product may preserve information needed for a custom algorithm but demands specialist expertise. A derived geophysical product is easier to analyse but incorporates the mission processor’s assumptions, calibration and quality screening.

  1. Write the required output in scientific terms. For example, specify radar phase, ground-range intensity, surface temperature, nitrogen-dioxide column or sea-surface height rather than simply “a Sentinel image.”
  2. Identify the lowest level that contains the needed information. Choose raw or radiance data only when your method genuinely needs them; otherwise prefer a documented derived product.
  3. Read the product definition for that mission. Level labels are not universal. Sentinel-1’s SLC, GRD and ocean Level-2 definitions should not be transferred to Sentinel-2, Sentinel-3 or Sentinel-5P.
  4. Check metadata and quality flags before analysis. Orbit and attitude information, geolocation, calibration state, cloud or aerosol flags and retrieval-quality indicators can determine whether a scene is usable.
  5. Record the processing baseline and access date. Reprocessing can alter values, masks or metadata while preserving the same mission name.

Compare products on six axes

Axis Decision to make Why it matters
Measured variable What physical quantity is being observed? Determines whether the mission is scientifically appropriate.
Sensor modality and instrument Radar, multispectral, radiometer, altimeter or atmospheric spectrometer? Controls the physical interpretation of the signal.
Spatial and temporal suitability Does coverage and sampling match the study area, event duration and scale? A technically correct product can still be unusable if it misses the location or timing.
Processing level Raw samples, radiances, focused imagery or a geophysical variable? Sets the processing burden and the assumptions already applied.
Latency Is the result needed immediately or can processing wait? NRT and non-time-critical products make different speed-versus-refinement trade-offs.
Calibration, validation and quality What flags, uncertainty information and validation records accompany the value? Determines whether the product is defensible for the intended claim.

The supplied mission descriptions do not establish universal numeric resolution, revisit, quality thresholds or region-specific coverage. Obtain those values from the technical documentation for the exact product, processing baseline, study area and dates.

A practical selection workflow

Step 1: Define the observable and decision use

Write one sentence such as “estimate coastal ocean colour,” “map crop condition,” “detect a gas plume,” “measure sea-surface height” or “derive wind over the ocean.” If the sentence contains several variables, split them into separate data requirements; one mission may not provide all of them.

Step 2: Pick the mission family

Use the mission table as a shortlist. Select Sentinel-1 for radar land or ocean work, Sentinel-2 for multispectral land monitoring, Sentinel-3 for its specific colour, temperature, topography or vegetation chain, Sentinel-5P for atmospheric composition, and Sentinel-6 for sea-surface height.

Step 3: Filter the live catalogue

Set the geographic footprint, acquisition period, mission, instrument and product level. Examine individual granules or passes rather than assuming that a mission’s nominal coverage means every location is observed on every date.

Step 4: Inspect metadata before downloading at scale

Confirm acquisition time, processing baseline, orbit or pass information, geolocation, cloud or atmospheric screening, calibration status and quality flags. Download a small representative sample and verify that its dimensions, units and coordinate reference match the planned workflow.

Step 5: Choose latency deliberately

For alerts or operational decisions, an NRT product may be appropriate. For a climate record or publication-quality retrospective analysis, a non-time-critical or reprocessed product may be preferable when it provides additional calibration or retrieval work. Document the choice and do not mix modes without testing their consistency.

Access, registration and delivery times

Systematically processed Sentinel data are available through the Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem after user registration. This is the named access route for Sentinel mission products.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The European Space Agency also describes a separate Climate Change Initiative Open Data Portal with free and open access to more than 100 satellite-derived climate datasets. That portal hosts climate data records; it is not the same service as the Data Space Ecosystem and should not be treated as a mirror of every current Sentinel product.

ESA’s general ground-segment description says systematically processed data are typically available within 3–24 hours of sensing, with timelines ranging from near-real-time to non-time-critical. Mission pages narrow that expectation for some products: Sentinel-3 core products are typically available within three hours, and Sentinel-5P Level-2 NRT products are described as supplied within three hours after sensing. Delivery time remains product- and service-specific, so verify the current availability and status in the access system.

Climate research: avoid confusing a mission with a climate record

A climate analysis needs more than a long list of scenes. Decide whether you require a homogeneous reprocessed record, a near-real-time stream, or a derived climate data record. Check calibration changes, processing baselines, quality flags, missing observations and the treatment of clouds, aerosols or retrieval failures.

For ocean and land variables, document the exact instrument chain and product version. Sentinel-3’s SLSTR, OLCI and SRAL products, for example, represent different observables and cannot be combined as if they were one sensor. For atmospheric composition, record whether Sentinel-5P values came from NRT or non-time-critical processing. For sea level, document the Sentinel-6 product definition, corrections and validation reference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When comparing missions, compare like with like: the same physical variable, compatible units and reference conventions, similar quality screening and a stated temporal treatment. A mission’s launch date or constellation size does not by itself establish a continuous climate record.

Current mission-status notes

Mission status changes, so check the live ESA mission pages before designing a long-term acquisition plan. ESA reports that Sentinel-1B’s mission ended unexpectedly in 2022 and Sentinel-1C launched on 5 December 2024, returning Sentinel-1 to a two-satellite constellation. Sentinel-2C launched on 5 September 2024. Sentinel-3C launched on 15 September 2026. Sentinel-4 launched on 1 July 2025, and Sentinel-5 launched on 13 August 2025.

These dates describe constellation status at the time reported and do not replace a check of current spacecraft health, product availability or the coverage of a particular region and period. Sentinel-5P remains the mission to evaluate for the atmospheric-composition products described above; the existence of later Sentinel atmospheric missions does not make their products interchangeable.

Common failure modes and fixes

“I downloaded an image, but it does not contain the variable I need.”

Return to the observable. Select the instrument and product that explicitly represents the variable, such as an ocean-colour, temperature, atmospheric-gas or sea-surface-height product, rather than relying on a generic browse image.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The optical archive has too many cloudy scenes.”

For a land or ocean question where radar is scientifically valid, evaluate Sentinel-1. If the research specifically requires optical reflectance, retain Sentinel-2 or Sentinel-3 optical data and apply documented cloud and quality screening instead of substituting radar values.

“The Level-2 file does not match another mission’s Level-2 file.”

Level labels are mission-specific. Read each product definition, units, corrections and quality flags; do not infer equivalence from the level number alone.

“The NRT and later files disagree.”

Check whether one file is near-real-time and the other non-time-critical or reprocessed. Additional calibration and retrieval steps can change values. Choose the mode that fits the study and avoid mixing them without a consistency assessment.

“There is no scene on the date I expected.”

Check the catalogue for the exact footprint, orbit or pass, acquisition window and processing status. Nominal mission coverage does not guarantee an analysis-ready observation for every date or location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“My result looks plausible, but the uncertainty is unclear.”

Inspect quality flags, calibration and validation documentation and retain the flags in your analysis. If the product documentation does not establish a threshold for your application, report that limitation rather than inventing one.

A concise decision rule

Use Sentinel-2 when the question is multispectral land reflectance; Sentinel-1 when radar, darkness or clouds are central; Sentinel-3 when the answer depends on its specific ocean-colour, reflectance, temperature, topography or vegetation chain; Sentinel-5P for atmospheric composition; and Sentinel-6 for sea-surface height. After choosing the mission, choose the product level, processing mode and quality screening that your method can defend. Finally, verify current coverage, specifications and latency in the official catalogue for the exact study.
