Then use a distance guide appropriate to the TV’s resolution, check the exact model’s dimensions and your room layout, and compare the sizes that fit. Samsung’s figures are useful starting points, not guarantees of comfort.
Start with the distance from your seat
Measure from where you normally sit to the front of the screen, or to the spot where the screen will sit if you have not bought the TV yet. For a room with several regular seats, measure the closest and farthest seats too: a size that feels immersive from the back row may feel overwhelming up close.

TV size in inches means the screen’s diagonal, from one corner to the opposite corner. It is not the TV’s width. A diagonal can help estimate viewing distance, but it does not tell you whether the set will fit a console, wall, or delivery route.

There is no single Samsung distance formula that applies in every market and to every resolution. Samsung Canada’s current guide distinguishes a general viewing distance from a closer recommended distance for 4K. It explains that higher resolution lets viewers sit closer while retaining detail. The Canadian guide also describes an approximately 30–40-degree field of view as ideal for a comfortable, cinematic image; treat that as Samsung’s guidance, not a universal standard.

| Screen diagonal | Samsung Canada general viewing distance | Samsung Canada recommended 4K viewing distance |
|---|---|---|
| 55 inches | 1.7 m (5.5 ft) | 1.4 m (4.6 ft) |
| 65 inches | 2.0 m (6.5 ft) | 1.7 m (5.4 ft) |
| 75 inches | 2.3 m (7.5 ft) | 1.9 m (6.3 ft) |
| 85 inches | 2.6 m (8.5 ft) | 2.2 m (7.1 ft) |
These distances are Samsung Canada’s recommendations in its guide accessed October 3, 2026. They are not independent test measurements or a promise that a given distance will feel comfortable to everyone. See Samsung Canada’s TV size and distance guide for its full context.
Samsung’s older UK support guidance uses a different shortcut: divide viewing distance in inches by two to estimate screen size. Its example says 10 feet gives about 60 inches, rounded to 65 inches. That September 15, 2021 guidance does not make the same resolution-specific distinction as the Canadian table, so do not mix its result with the Canadian distances as if they were one calculation. If you are in the UK, consult Samsung UK’s recommended TV size guidance; use either approach as a starting point and let comfort and fit decide between plausible options.
Compare the sizes that suit your distance
Use the guide to create a shortlist rather than to select a TV automatically. If your measured distance falls between two options, compare both diagonals against your closest and farthest regular seats. A 4K screen can make a larger size practical at a shorter distance than a general-distance rule suggests, but resolution does not settle questions of comfort, viewing habits, seating, or room layout.

When both sizes seem workable, decide based on what matters in your room:
- Seating: Will the nearest regular viewer be comfortable, and can the farthest viewer see details?
- Use: A large screen may suit movies, sports, or a dedicated multimedia room; everyday viewing or a bedroom may call for a less imposing screen.
- Layout: Does the screen overwhelm the furniture or block a walkway, window, or other view?
- Budget: Compare the exact models you are considering rather than treating screen size as the only difference.
- Preference: If two sizes fit the distance and room, immersion versus a more restrained view is a personal choice—not a rule that bigger is always better.
Account for the room’s use, not just its dimensions
“What size TV should I get?” depends on where you sit and what you watch, not simply whether the room is called a bedroom or living room. Samsung Jordan’s examples pair a 43-inch bedroom screen with a general distance of about 1.3–1.4 m (4.3–4.5 ft), a 65-inch living-room example with 2.0 m (6.5 ft), and larger screens with longer-distance multimedia rooms. Those are examples from Samsung Jordan, not universal room-size prescriptions. See its room-by-room TV size guide for that market’s recommendations.
For a bedroom, measure from the position where you actually watch—such as the bed—not from the doorway or the center of the room. In a shared living room or media space, use the regular seating positions that matter most. A room’s floor area can help you assess furniture and circulation, but it cannot replace the seat-to-screen measurement.

Check the exact model’s dimensions and installation
Before ordering, look up the complete dimensions for the exact Samsung model. Dimensions can vary even among TVs with the same diagonal. Check the width, height, depth, and stand or feet footprint, including the spacing between the feet. Make sure the console is wide and deep enough, and allow room for any soundbar or connected devices.

If you plan to wall-mount the set, check that the wall and mounting arrangement can support the TV, and position it at a comfortable height for seated viewing. Do not assume a larger screen will fit just because its diagonal seems suitable; its actual width and height determine whether it works on the wall.
For a large screen, measure the delivery path before buying: doors, hallways, stairs, and elevators can be tighter than the final installation space. Check the packaged TV’s dimensions if they are available, since the box—not only the installed set—has to make the trip.
A practical way to make the final choice
- Measure viewing distance. From your normal seat, measure to the planned screen position. Record the nearest and farthest regular seats if more than one position is used.
- Choose a relevant reference. If Samsung Canada’s resolution-specific table suits your market and TV, compare its general and 4K distances. Do not treat the older UK half-distance shortcut as the same formula.
- Shortlist two or three diagonals. Use distance to narrow the range, then consider resolution, how you watch, and who uses the room.
- Verify physical fit. Compare the exact model’s width, height, depth, stand footprint, console or wall space, and delivery route.
- Choose for the room you have. If more than one option fits, balance comfort for regular seats, intended use, layout, and budget against your preference for immersion.
