Choose running shoes by measuring both feet and checking how each model fits—not by relying on your usual everyday size. Start with roughly a thumb’s width of space in front of your longest toe, enough forefoot room to avoid pressure, and a heel and midfoot that feel secure without pinching. Then walk or jog in the shoes with your usual running socks and any orthotics.
How should running shoes fit?
A well-fitting shoe gives your toes room to move while holding your foot comfortably in place. Check three areas separately: length at the front, width and shape across the forefoot, and security at the heel and midfoot. A shoe may be long enough but still squeeze the sides, or feel loose because its shape does not match your foot.

Leave room at the toes
Use the space in front of your longest toe as a starting check, not a precise sizing formula. REI recommends about a thumb’s width; Brooks recommends about 1/2 to 1 inch, while clinical authors Kevin R. Vincent and Heather K. Vincent describe a thumbnail-width gap. These recommendations are not identical. In any case, your toes should not press against the front when you stand or move in the shoe. REI’s running-shoe fitting advice, Brooks’ fit guide, and the University of Florida-hosted article “Seven Tips to Effective Running Shoe Sizing” offer these respective heuristics.

If the shoe is long enough but presses on the sides of your forefoot, try a wider width or a different toe-box shape before adding length. Width options and how they are constructed vary by brand and model; Brooks’ explanation of its widths applies to its own shoes, not every manufacturer. Brooks’ guide discusses its specific width options.

Keep the heel and midfoot secure
Your heel and midfoot should feel held without tightness, rubbing, or numbness. A snug heel and a roomier forefoot can be a design choice in particular models: ASICS describes that approach for its shoes, but it is not a rule for all brands. ASICS’ fitting guidance describes its own approach.
How to find your size and test a pair
- Measure both feet. Feet can differ in length or shape. Use the larger foot to guide your choice, and treat your old shoe size as a starting reference only.
- Try shoes later in the day. Wear the socks you plan to run in, and bring any orthotics you use. Feet may be larger later in the day, so a try-on then can help reveal pressure that is not obvious earlier.
- Stand and move in each shoe. Check that your longest toe has roughly a thumb’s width of space and does not press against the front. Walk, jog in place, or otherwise move enough to notice whether the fit changes.
- Check the forefoot. Look for pressure, rubbing, or binding across the toes and ball of the foot. If length feels right but the sides squeeze, compare a wider width or another shoe shape rather than reflexively going longer.
- Check heel and midfoot security. They should feel snug but not tight. If your heel slips, try a runner’s loop—a lacing technique that helps secure the heel. If slippage continues, the heel cup may not match your foot.
- Try a brief run or clean indoor trial if allowed. Return policies differ by seller, so check the terms before wearing the shoes outside. If a clear fit problem appears, contact the seller promptly.
Fit should take priority when comparing otherwise suitable options. Also consider where and how you plan to run: the feel you want may differ for road or trail use, or with your pace. Nike’s guide discusses those preferences, but fit still needs to be assessed on the specific model. Nike’s running-shoe fit article includes guidance from its coaches. Nike running coach Dave Ridley notes that room for movement in the toe box may mean a running shoe is a little bigger than an everyday walking shoe; that does not establish one size-up amount for everyone.

What discomfort can tell you
Symptoms can be clues that the fit needs reassessment, not diagnoses. REI describes several patterns and possible next steps in its running-shoe advice.
- Toes touch the front or become bruised: Recheck length and toe room.
- Toes feel numb or tingly: Reconsider length, width, and shoe volume. A narrow fit may be a factor; if symptoms persist, seek professional assessment instead of continuing to guess at sizes.
- Blisters between or on top of the toes: The shoe may be too small, so reassess toe room and overall fit.
- A blister at the ball of the foot: The shoe may be too wide or its shape may not suit your foot. Compare the fit rather than assuming every blister has the same cause.
- Heel slipping or blisters: Try a runner’s loop. If that does not help, consider whether the heel cup’s shape suits your foot.
Do you need to size up for running?
Not necessarily. Running shoes may need more toe room than shoes you wear casually, but the right size depends on your measured feet and how the particular model fits. Nike coach Dave Ridley’s advice that toe-box movement can mean a running shoe is a little bigger than an everyday walking shoe is a useful possibility, not a universal size-up rule. Compare fit rather than automatically adding a fixed amount.

There is no single measurement here that guarantees a correct fit: the thumb-width and thumbnail-width recommendations are practical guides, and comfort while moving is the final check. Sizing and shape vary between brands and models, so retest each pair rather than assuming the same size will fit every shoe. Nike running coach Lydia O’Donnell likewise notes that runners’ fit preferences differ.
