What refrigerator capacity should you start with?
GE Appliances offers these approximate capacity ranges by household size:

Capacity needs can differ even between households of the same size. Frequent meal preparation, bulk grocery shopping, and entertaining can call for more room; minimalist eating may call for less. Consider how much fresh food you keep on hand and how much freezer space you actually use. Whirlpool also recommends weighing grocery-shopping habits alongside household size. Why there is no single per-person formula
Published categories differ. Whirlpool describes small-space refrigerators as roughly 11–18 cu. ft., a standard capacity as around 20 cu. ft., and large capacity as closer to 30 cu. ft. Those labels are approximate, and the guide does not state a publication date. Use household ranges to narrow your search, then let your storage habits and the space available determine the practical choice.
How to measure the kitchen opening and delivery route
A refrigerator’s listed width, height, and depth do not by themselves establish that it will fit or work in your kitchen. Measure the opening and check how the unit will be installed and moved into place before settling on a model.

- Measure the opening. Record its height, width, and depth. Account for baseboards, trim, uneven flooring, counters, and overhead cabinets that reduce usable space.
- Check the model’s installation instructions. Confirm its required ventilation clearances rather than assuming every refrigerator needs the same space. GE’s guide recommends at least 1 inch at the top and back and about 2 inches at the hinge side; requirements vary by model. GE Appliances’ measurement guidance
- Check access with doors and drawers open. Make sure doors and drawers can open fully without hitting a wall, cabinet, or island. Confirm the selected model’s open-door dimensions and hinge requirements. In tight spaces near a wall, GE notes that side-by-side or French-door designs may need less clearance to open fully than some alternatives.
- Measure the delivery route. Check entry doors, hallways, and stairs—not just the kitchen opening. A refrigerator may fit its final space but be difficult to move there; Whirlpool also advises measuring the route. Ask the retailer or delivery provider whether the planned delivery requires removing doors or other preparation.
How capacity and configuration affect energy use
ENERGY STAR’s refrigerator buying guidance says larger refrigerators generally use more energy. It also says the most energy-efficient models are typically 16–20 cu. ft. This is program-level guidance, not a household-size formula or a guarantee that a particular model will use less energy than every larger one. ENERGY STAR refrigerator guidance

That is a general tendency, not a guarantee for every refrigerator. Compare energy information for the specific models you are considering, along with capacity and the configuration that suits your kitchen.

A practical way to compare candidate refrigerators
Use this order to rule out poor fits before weighing features:
- Set a capacity range. Begin with household size, then adjust it for shopping, cooking, entertaining, and freezer habits.
- Check physical fit. Compare the model’s dimensions and installation clearances with your measured opening.
- Test access and delivery feasibility. Consider door and drawer movement in the kitchen, plus every narrow point along the delivery route.
- Compare energy information. Once capacity and fit are plausible, weigh model-level energy information and configuration.
Only after those checks should features decide between models. A refrigerator that meets your storage needs but cannot be installed or opened properly is not the right size for your household.
